Newly acquired Oakland Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer, who hasn't played or practiced since last season, is expected to start Sunday's game against Kansas City, a team official told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Palmer, who has been holding out this season, was dealt Tuesday by the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for a 2012 first-round pick and a conditional second-rounder in 2013.
Raiders coach Hue Jackson would not say Tuesday whether Palmer would start against the Chiefs. Palmer said it will take some time to learn the offense, build chemistry with his receivers and get back into football shape.
Oakland (4-2) is counting on Palmer to replace the injured Jason Campbell and lead the team back to the playoffs for the first time since 2002.
Jackson believes Palmer is the ideal fit, having recruited and coached him at USC and been an assistant in Cincinnati with Palmer.
"This guy can play and he knows how to play the game and he knows how to elevate the players around him," Jackson said Tuesday.
The Raiders (4-2) became desperate for a quarterback after Campbell broke his collarbone Sunday in a win over the Browns.
Campbell had surgery Monday and was expected to miss at least six weeks, leaving the Raiders with only Kyle Boller and rookie Terrelle Pryor on the roster.
Also Wednesday, the Raiders placed defensive end Matt Shaughnessy on season-ending injured reserve with a shoulder injury. The team made the move to make room on the 53-man roster for Palmer.
The Raiders also signed offensive lineman Zach Hurd to the practice squad.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

boller didnt look that bad against browns. obviously even a rusty palmer is better long term but it seems like an extra week for palmer to get acclimated would make the most sense but thats why these guys at the raiders make the big bucks

Carson will do just fine. Only thing that he might not like is the raiders offensive scheme doesnt cater to his style of play
