My friend wants to join and he was bringing up some good points. Like the economy sucks and might as well do 4 years and just save the $ you make/get GI bill for grad school/free health care/housing and try to leave with a decent amount of starting $.

I really know nothing about it, anyone got any opinions on the navy?

the Navy is the absolute best service to join as far as quality of life...they take care the sailors...i was a Marine but spent time on a Navy base and those duds had the LIFE! depending on the job they do they also translate very well to the civ world....plus its a fuckin party all the time when you are noton duty....i think all young people should experience military life in some form...

as far as the GI Bill it is awesome...i used the whole thing while in college and it helped...plus they have a thing called tution assistance that any active duty can go to school 100% free while they are in if the chain of command approves..if he is not on a ship he could prob get an associates completely free..

the pay isnt the greatest but the living expenses are very low...you have free food and housing...if you are smart with money you could have a nice amount when you get out...plus get to travel to foreign countries and get as much ass as you want...

no you dont join for that...but it comes as a benefit...like i said it all depends on your job/duty station..i know Navy guys based in Fuji, Japan and get to go to Tokyo every weekend. You have Naval Police in Bangor WA who live in Seattle and Canada when they are not on duty...it really all depends.. i didnt mean to imply thats a real reason to join.. i was just saying trying to say that its not the rigid strict life one might think

I think I'd go for the Air Force before the Navy.

AF good too..its all about the money.. AF and Navy are allocated a larger budget for troop welfare then the Army or Marines... thats why you see much better housing, newer equip, better food, and overall better quaility of life in Navy or AF

The Air Force has the best living quarters and food by far. I was in the Marine Corps like gdog and every station i was stationed at was a Naval Base. I went to Hill AFB for a month and their housing was like a Hotel. Single rooms, fridge, but you shared a head (bathroom) with the room next to you. Food was great. Navy food isn't bad either. In the mornings i would go to chow hall and tell them exactly what i wanted on my omelette. Bacon, ham, japs, you name it and they make it. The military definitely feeds you well. Lot's to choose from and eat. Milk, juice and soda's to drink. Ice Cream, cakes, pies. I got mucho ass in the military. Not a reason to join, but definitely a plus. I stayed at one Marine Corps Base when i was in Hawaii and the living quarters were polar opposite of the A.F. We stayed in a open squad bay with 60+ and had mosquito nets draped over our racks so we didn't get eaten alive. Food was edible, but nothing to write home about.

I'm a Coast Guard Officer in Washington DC.....Officer life isn't bad (prior Enlisted Navy and CG). The promotion process - once you get to the O4 level - is very competitive. Once you finish whatever training you go through, life isn't too bad.

IMO, the Air Force is probably the best service as far as quality of life....

Funny...went out with my wife last night and while I'm playing pool with a colleague of mine, a guy walks up to her and says, "Hi, I'm ___, I am enlisted in the military and thought that you were the most gorgeous thing I have ever seen." Blah Blah Blah

My wife then showed him her wedding ring and he says, "which one is your husband." My colleague is a smaller guy and I'm a former college linebacker. I guess it mattered which one of us she was married too because he wouldn't have stopped his pursuit if it was my friend.

I have a great deal of respect for people in the military, but some of these dudes have got to get a grip on this "service gets you ass" idea. It might work with some whores, but keep that shit away from me.

ok well i guess that ends the debate on the ass getting portion of joining the military...since you put 1 military kid in place i guess that completely disproves my actual eye wtiness accounts over four years of service...not every kid in uniform is a tough guy and i highly doubt your massive physical bearing backed him down...he probably was being respectful after realzing she was taken....

and you probably got off pretty lucky in the whole affair since it seems you had your eye on actually fighting...young military guys usuallytravel in groups and you might have been in for more than you think if you would have continued your ex linebacker bravado...

A. I never said anything about fighting!

B. I never said that military dudes don't get "ass". I simply think that is just a really dumb reason to dedicate your life to the service.

C. I am a high school teacher and a coach and have a respect in the community and with my family that I try to uphold...I don't go around bars sticking out my chest wanting to fight and "punk" people down.

D. I didn't put anyone in their place, my wife did. I never said a word to the guy, my wife can handle herself. If he would have put his hands on her, that would have been a different story. The guy handled himself quite well also, I just thought it was funny that once she told him she was married, he still wanted to know, "to which one".

I'm not trying to be some internet tough guy. I am just simply stating facts to the night. Believe it or not, never every woman is totally consumed and falls for, "I am a marine".

I've lived in many military areas. Military guys do get women but they are often quite plain ( IMO). They tend to marry young and have kids young.

Not all Military people are alike. There are definitely some douche bags. That goes for all walks of life.

If you are married and/or have kids you can live in on base housing before you are an E-5. So, there are those who do that. I've met a lot of cool people while i was in. There does seem to be quite a bit that get married young and have kids, but that also goes for the real world.

So why do the armed forces essentially encourage young men to have families ?
