I have a freind that sold allot of his baseball collection of cards on ebay. Rather then sell them to a store he got allot more money out of selling them himself. they make books that show the value of baseball / football cards. but you probably already know this.

Hello Ace, I have a very good friend in the next town over that owns a sports memorabilia store, has been in the business for over 20 years. I use to work for him once in awhile and started collecting myself back in the late 80's and early 90's. Any dealer is only gonna give ya 50% of face value of most cards and autographed memorabilia, they need to make $$$ so don't expect full price unless you sell things yourself. How do you determine price? Most people use the Beckett Guides, one for each of the 4 major sports and Tuff Stuff magazine as well. Tuff Stuff I believe has autograph memorabilia in the back pages as well. The baseball card industry was booming back in the early 90's but like everything else has taken a major plunge in value over the past 15 years. However there are still some highly collectible cards that still fetch good money especially Rookie Cards. Nolan Ryan, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Jerry Rice etc........
Depending on how you want to cash out you should get the collection valued, maybe a few sections at a time so you at least know what you have and don't get ripped off. Find 2 or 3 dealers in the area and get a couple quotes (again, if its a large collection do it sections at a time) after you have an idea of what the value is you can try and get close to 100% value on Craigs list or E-bay. I know its a hassle with shipping on E-Bay but Craig s list you can meet the potential buyer at a convenient location near your home. (I don't like inviting strangers in my house so I usually meet people close by in parking lot during the day with people around, never can tell if someone wants to rip you off)
If you have some questions as far as not knowing what somethings may be worth PM me and I'll put you in touch with my buddy who owns a store.
Another way to sell your collection is look for any malls having baseball card conventions. Around here my buddy will have 3-4 ex-players or current players signing autographs for a fee and then he sells tables to small dealers trying to sell their collections. If you have any such events you can sell your stuff to these smaller dealers or rent a table for 3 days and sell your stuff on your own. (I imagine the later is not practical in your case.) But you need to find out what the monetary value of the collection is before you go forward. A lot of these card dealers will rip-off an uneducated seller in a heart beat! Remember, you have the Becketts magazines, Tuff Stuff magazine, google or go to 2-3 Baseball Card/Memorabilia stores to get the collection appraised. Expect about 50% on most stuff they like but you can negotiate higher if they really seem excited. One more thing.............DO NOT OPEN ANYTHING!!! An unopened item such as a Starting Line-up figurine or McFarland figurine are worth 2-3 times than an opened package. Full sets of unopened boxes of baseball, basketball, football and hockey cards are desired and as a buyer you know that certain valuable cards are intact as opposed to open sets.
Sorry for the long post but this is an area I am very familiar with. again, please feel free to PM me for my Phone number if I can be of any further assistance.................Bob

I used to be a big card and comic collector. My grandfather left me a ton of baseball cards from the 60's and 70's. The market took a huge hit in the late 90's and has never caught up. You would be lucky if a dealer was to give you 50% of the beckett value. As times yours said, DON'T OPEN ANYTHING! It is a real pain to try and sell off cards. Sure there are the rookie cards that collectors want, but complete sets are hard to move. Most of the time it is easier to sell off the cards in a set that are worth money. I still have my cards all boxed up just sitting in storage. Maybe my kids will be able to do something with them someday. There is a bigger market for memorabilia then there is for cards. That's gonna be the easier sell.

My dad always told me the cards are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them.

Early games

$500.00 Take 'Under' 41 Jacksonville at Houston (1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 30)
Jacksonville's defense shut down the Baltimore offense on Monday Night Football and I think that this Jaguars team might have turned a corner. They are still only averaging 12 points per game and now they are facing a very underrated Houston defense. Wade Phillips has made a big difference for the Texans and I expect their great play to continue (No. 8 overall defense; No. 5 points allowed). Houston has been a lot less explosive without Andre Johnson in the lineup. He has been practicing but I don't think he will play and I don't think he will make a difference if he does. Before their 41-point outburst last week the Texans had averaged just 17 points in their three previous games. Both teams want to run the ball here and that will keep the clock going. Look for a smashmouth game and a low-scoring one that we will collect on.
$700.00 Take 'Under' 43.5 Indianapolis at Tennessee (1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 30)
Indianapolis was humiliated last week against New Orleans while giving up 62 points. These players are professionals and I think that they will have as much motivation as any defense in football this week to come out and have a strong showing. The Titans offense is certainly not as strong as the Saints. Tennessee has only scored over 20 points two times this year and they have not been the same without Kenny Britt. Tennessee is No. 25 in the NFL in points scored with 18.7 per game and Indianapolis is right behind them at No. 29 in points scored with 15 points per game. Houston embarrassed the Titans defense last week by scoring 41 points. They have something to prove too. Defense rules in this one and it stays 'under'.
