Hard times for the Doctor. Very sad.

Times are tough for business owners both big and small in 2011, and Basketball Hall of Famer Julius Erving is no exception. The former Philadelphia 76ers legend is being sued for nearly a quarter of a million dollars after an investment in a golf club went belly-up.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has the breakdown:
Erving's company was given a $1 million line of credit in April 2009, which was due the following April, according to the lawsuit obtained by the AJC. Erving used a Gwinnett County home as collateral to secure the loan, the lawsuit states.
In August 2010, the line of credit was reduced to $750,000 and the maturity date extended to July 24, the bank stated in the suit. But, an outstanding balance of $205,277.84 has not been paid, despite a demand letter for payment sent Sept. 29.
Erving, better known by his nickname Dr. J, moved to the Atlanta area in 2008, about two years after purchasing the Heritage Golf Club, near the Gwinnett-DeKalb county line. The AJC reported in April 2010 that the golf club was in foreclosure.
That's just all sorts of unfortunate. Erving has taken in plenty of post-playing work since retiring from the NBA in 1987, including stints as an analyst on NBC and a gig with the Orlando Magic as an advisor. It's not clear what his role in the failed golf club was, but he's certainly on the hook here.
In what the AJC is calling an "unrelated" event, a litany of Dr. J's personal memorabilia has gone up for auction, through the SCP Auctions company. It's a pretty significant list of swag, available here:
Some of the marquis items from the collection include Dr. J's 1974 and 1976 New York Nets ABA World Championship ring; 1983 Philadelphia 76ers World Championship ring; 1996 NBA's 50 Greatest Players ring; MVP trophies from 1975-76 (ABA) and 1980-81 (NBA); 1977 and 1983 NBA All-Star game MVP trophies; 1979, 1981 and 1985 Eastern Conference All-Star game-worn uniforms, 1982-83 Philadelphia 76ers game-worn road uniform; and his final game-worn jersey from Game 5 of the 1987 Eastern Conference playoffs.
That's not just some of his memorabilia -- that's all his memorabilia. Championship rings? MVP trophies? His jersey from his final game as a Sixer? It's a cool stash, but it's also more than a little depressing

Absolutely. I used to play at Trump Plaza and saw him on the high limit slots. He loved the $25 and $100 token machines. John Thompson is also a heavy player of slot machines. The difference is John Thompson has a seemingly endless flow of cash. One of the Coast casinos in Las Vegas years ago put a plaque up in the high limit room of one their casinos and it said The John Thompson Corner. Dr J was a bad businessman. He just happened to play in the wrong era. When he joined the Sixers in 1976 the finals were on tape delay after the 11pm news. I mean it's hard to believe. Granted there were only three channels but the NBA was pretty well established then. The weekend games were shown live but the midweek final games were on tape delay. It was the ultimate insult. You put Dr J in the Jordan era and he is making a max contract. $15 million + a year. A mega shoe deal. TV commercials non-stop. Julius Erving only made a little over $1 million a year in 1985. It was decent money back then but when you factor in his marital problems, children out of wedlock
it doesn't go very far. He worked as a commentator in NBC but he wasn't very good. He was also an executive VP of the Magic thanks to Pat Williams former GM and good friend from his time on Sixers. Dr J's also owned a Coca Cola bottling plant in Philadelphia. He was involved with a Nascar team. He was living in St George, Utah just too damn close to Las Vegas. My friend told me he saw him playing at the Cosmopolitan just a few months ago. When you have little or no money coming in playing high limit slot machines is a sure way to go broke.

i hardly go to casinos and Ive even seen him at one.

Derby weekend a few years ago (5 or so). that ceasers boat on the ohio river
in Indiana. High stakes area blackjakc for some time but then high stakes slots areas, I thought omg why that...

my best buddy with me at the time is the largest Dr. J fan that I know.

He did politely go and introduce himself and bought him a drink (it was comped but my buddy gave a nice tip the the waitress to sort of celebrate the moment). they talked for a brief time but did talk...

where is this stuff being sold? Auction? Id love to bid on something, what price universe do you think we are talking about on any of this? 33k :)

If he lasted 24 years after the NBA and while not yet making the huge money, he did much better than most.

Most of these guys are broke in 24 months. High stake slots is a pretty dumb way to gamble. I'm guessing you lose maybe $1,000 / hour playing those things ?

SCP Auctions announced late Wednesday that it has been hired to sell the personal collection of Dr. J. The company will offer them in its upcoming fall catalog auction and its November monthly auction.

Couldn't a guy like this at least find some way to make an easy 100k a year doing something ?

I know 100k is nothing to most here, but 100k to promote Cheesesteaks for a restaurant in Philly or something should be easy work for some ads and guest appearances, autograph signings.

I don't recall him getting in any real legal issues ? A lot of dudes here have seen him in casinos, I believe them, too ! How did he last this long ?

He can still make some money off of his fame,,,shit somebody in Philly would pay him 20k to attend their birthday party, stag, wedding, etc.

I once read Larry Hagman ( Dallas, I dream of Jeannie) would go to your party for 50k.

Julius can still muster up a few hundred k quick with appearances and such, esp. around Philly.

He must fancy himself a golfer, I'm sure he could get paid to golf with older fans....even if shoots 95.

He's like a top ten player of the last 40 years, he can still get paid to appear at various functions.

Fame would suck for me personally ( leave me the Fuck alone)....but one that is famous should be able to cash in on that pretty easily at a later date....when things go South...

Lindsey Lohan is a great example

every ex-POTUS since about Gerald Ford

Carlos Estevez
