Holy Cross defeats Bethlehem with huge first half
It was an incredible, dominating, overwhelming and unheard of display of scoring by the Holy Cross Cougars against district foe Bardstown Bethlehem senior night at Alumni Field.

The first quarter wasn’t half way finished and the Cougars put 49 points on the scoreboard. There’s no KHSAA record listed for how quickly points are scored, but it took just 5:24 for Holy Cross to score 49.
And those came with the Cougars only having two offensive set plays.

It is hard to put into perspective the rate at which the Cougars were scoring. At one point they were on a touchdown-per-minute pace.

The point party began on the game’s opening kickoff. What appeared to be a miscue by junior Aaron Drury turned into a 93 yard touchdown return.

The score: 7-0. Time elapsed: 00:15.

The Holy Cross defense held the Eagles, forcing a punt. Senior Cody Couch received the punt, got brilliant blocks and ran a 60-yard dash to the end zone for a touchdown.

“I’ve been telling the coaches all year I wanted to return a punt,” Couch said. “They gave me the chance, I got great blocking and it was a dream come true to run a punt back.”

The score: 14-0. Time elapsed: 1:58.

Bethlehem was on the unfortunate side of the ball, facing a poised and focused predator defense. Cougar senior Jessie Keen recovered a loose ball at the Eagle ten yard line. Six seconds later senior Cameron Scott hit senior Chad Conway for a ten yard touchdown.

The score: 21-0. Time elapsed: 2:46.

The Eagles gained a little ground on their next possession. But following a first down, Bethlehem turned the ball over again. Holy Cross junior Jordan Willenborg recovered a fumble on the Bethlehem 37 yard line. The next play was a 37-yard touchdown run by Keen.

The score: 28-0. Time elapsed: 4:13.

Less than a minute later Couch is again in the end zone for the Cougars. He scooped up an overthrown Eagle pass for an interception and cruised in for a 43 yard score.

The score: 35-0. Time elapsed: 5:08.

“It was like the tip drill,” Couch said. “It hit off the guy’s foot, kicked up into my hands and I ran it back.”

Seven seconds later, yes, seven seconds later, on first down, Bethlehem throws again. This time Robbie Valdez was in the right spot for the pick six.

The score: 42-0. Time elapsed: 5:15.

It was a night many fans just simply said, “crazy,” and, “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

An example of that was when the Eagles turned the ball over on their own eight yard line. It wasn’t just a fumble. A Cougar defender knocked the ball loose. It bounced once and then into the long arms of senior Henry Vincent. He knew exactly where to go and eight yards later it was
another Cougar score.

The score: 49-0. Time elapsed: 5:24.
“Right before it happened I told Coach Stoltz and Coach P that I was going to score,” said Vincent. “I wanted to try and dunk the ball on the goal post but didn’t have the chance.”

The Eagles continued to play hard in the midst of a difficult night. Junior Brock Hurst recovered a Holy Cross fumble to buy Bethlehem some time. But the predator defense again forced a punt.

Holy Cross senior quarterback Cameron Scott raced right up the middle for a 70 yard touchdown two minutes into the second quarter. Keen and Willenborg added another score each, giving the Cougars a 69-0 lead at the half.

Teams agreed to shorten the second half and keep a running clock. Bethlehem scored a field goal late in the game but it was a tough ride back to Nelson County after a 69-3 loss.

The win earns the Cougars the Class A, District Two title for the fifth straight year and guarantees two home games in the playoffs.

Holy Cross (8-1) finishes the season next week at Class 6A Seneca. Bethlehem (2-7) heads to Gallatin County.
