Doc and Maynard were 2 of my favorites growing up since I also played trumpet. I went to see Doc at the Hollywood Bowl in '91 and was hugely disappointed. He played a bunch of fusion/junk jazz that I really didn't care for. It was quite different than the stuff he played on the Carson show.

On the other hand, I saw Maynard in person and he rocked the house. I enjoyed his show very much.

Many say Johnny had the most power out of anyone in Hollywood during his day, he could make or break anybody.
He and Doc were very close friends.

Doc was on the best bandleaders that ever lived.
I dont even know what passes for jazz these days, but when I was a kid, there were thousands of amazing trumpeters.

Don Ellis invented the quarter tone trumpet, could split half tones, four valves, the man was pure genius, died in his prime of heart attack.
Wrote movie scores, did it all. Would have been the greatest there ever was, no debate.

Here, read.......
