I suppose all that’s important here is that Trent Glaze, who has muscular dystrophy and is confined to a wheelchair, said that scoring a touchdown for the Fairfield Union High (Ohio) varsity football team on Friday was something that “I will remember for the rest of my life. It was my chance to shine.”
The game was officially over — Fairfield had lost to Teays Valley — but the players stayed on the field for one more play, to give Glaze a chance to carry the ball. The senior, a team captain who has been in a wheelchair for 10 years, had attended every Fairfield practice, rain or shine, all season. He studied the opposition and called out offensive plays. His dream, he said, was to actually suit up and run a play on the field.

When he got there, players and fans alike descended upon him, making the scene look more like the Falcons had won a conference title instead of finishing a winless season. When the scrum finally broke up so the two teams could shake hands, Glaze was right there with them. Several Teays Valley players stopped to hug him or rub his helmet, and a coach thanked the Falcons for letting them participate.
Fairfield coach Tom McCurdy then held one final huddle with his team, spending about half of it with his arm around Glaze. The way the night ended clearly had more meaning for him than anything.
“He may not be on the field, but … high school athletics is about him,” he said.
