Let's say you get your dream job. Paid well to do what you enjoy. You are doing it for 25 years and are 5-10 years from retirement. You are the right hand man. The owner of the company thinks of you as his #1 guy. You are the one that basically runs the company and the owner loves you for it.

One day an intern goes into your office and tells you he saw you top manager acting inappropriate with a child. They don't tell you much details but you don't think the manager is capable of such a thing so you reaffirm and reaffirm with this intern you don't even know the name of.

You immediately tell the owner because you don't know what you are supposed to do....call the police, HR dept, etc. The owner sounds absolutely shocked and says "thank you, i will contact the police after I settle down and get this taken care of. I have to make sure these facts are correct but if so then this must be dealt with immediately. Please go back to work and keep the company running as if nothing has happened. With something this serious, I think the best thing to do is to make sure everyone is busy and working."

You don't know what happened but weeks go by and this manager is still working or at least showing up to work. No arrest, no jail time....you ask the owner what happens and he says "It is taken care of, this shit will NOT happen again, I made sure of it". You question the appearance of no consequences. Owner says "Again, do NOT ever mention this again. It has been taken care of for everyone involved. Making a big deal with destroy the company and ruin all the jobs of the 100s of employees and their families we have working here. He will NOT do anything of the sort again. I assure you of this."

WHAT DO YOU DO? keep working? go to the police? Quit your dream job? Talk to this guy directly?

I'm not saying this is what happened or this is what i believe happened.

99.9 percent of people will say that they would have treated this much different than "Joe Pa" did (myself included).

Fact of the matter is, the percentage of the people that would have done things differently is much smaller if they were actually put in the same situation.

Ive lived in this world long enough to know that many people in this world look out for #1 first and foremost. And they base most of their decisions on what the consequences will be for themselves, rather than doing the right thing.

Sad but true.

big fail in this metaphor as far as Mike McQueary the grad assistant is concerned.... the guy had thrown 20 some TD's for Joe's team a few years earlier. he was almost 30 at the time, Its not like he was some strange snot nosed kid coming in to tell Paterno these things he witnessed

Sorry Archie......As I said, this is NOT what happened with JoePa and his story. I'm just trying to create a similar scenario and skew it as much as possible in favor of the Paterno side of the story.

FWIW, I think he is a horrible person for putting his legacy and friendship above the many children that were involved. There is nothing more sick and messed up in my mind than ruining the innocence of a child. If this were happening to his kids I bet he would've reacted much different. I'm just trying to see his side of the story....if it is even possible.

I do not call the police based on an accusation.

I do call the police if I witness something.

In this case, I would alert the family of the inappropriate accusation and tell them that if they indeed believe it to be true they should contact the police.

i dont think there is one person who disagrees with this.....but this is an accusation from someone that ISN'T your best friend. For all you know, this kid could hate the person he is talking about and is just blowing things out of proportion to get him in trouble.

more information is necassary for sure but is that your job to investigate?

This is exactly what I would do too, but I'd one more thing. I'd tell the person that witnessed it that he should call the police and tell them what he saw.

If someone told me they witnessed someone do something horrible but they didn't want to call the police I'd think something was suspect with them.

Joe's only mistake was although he told is superior which was initially all he was required to do, after 2 or three years went by and nothing was done, he should have again went to the college president and demand he refer to incident to the police. I was hoping they would let him finish the season but I'm in the minority.

Remember it was Sandusky's defense that intercepted 5 passes of Heisman Trophy winner Testaverde that was a contributing factor to one of Paterno's two championship teams. Maybe he was reluctant to go any farther than he did because of blind loyalty to those who he went to battle with regardless of their transgressions. Surely he was in a tough spot & may have looked the other way as incidents mounted!

what if you are in the military with people that you risk your life with. They have saved your lives numerous times and you find out one of your brothers rapes an iraqi boy wandering the streets looking for marbles and used bomb parts. do you rat them out?

Without a doubt I would report him if not make him a victim of ''friendly fire'' Anybody who doesn't at least report him is as barbaric as any other savage. Look at it this way..a kid is a kid. Iraqi or not. What if it were your kid gmenknicks? Karma....
