I gotta admit the current NBA offer is awful.

There is almost no hope for NBA basketball this year, in fact after reading about the latest offer from the owners I really wonder if the owners ever really intended to have a season this year.

The 50/50 split, down from the 57/43 split in the players favor the previous 6 seasons is a dramatic change BUT the system changes are so large as to make one scratch their head in disbelief, essentially the NBA has chosen to sacrifice this season in an effort to reorganize the entire structure of the NBA.

The players essentially are screwed, by that I mean if they reject this horrific offer they will be offered an even worse offer which they will obviously refuse and have only one choice which is to decertify the union and take their case to the courts, which will result in a loss of the season and probably as bad a deal as they are currently being offered anyway.

One part of the new proposal essentially eliminates guaranteed contracts (a staple of the NBA and one of the most valuable features for players) and instead allows the league at any time to demote the player to the D-league and adjust his salary down to 75k a year

The NBA is flat out recreating their entire system from scratch, every single problem they've had in the past financially and with the lack of competition causing the championship to always be won by only their very largest markets is being correct ALL AT ONCE.

I wish the books would post a line for whether or not there will be an NBA game played this year bc I would probably go huge on the NO, the owners have gone for the haymaker knockout blow in this negotiation and whether this year or the next the players are going to get a deal that is worlds worse than their previous one.

The worst part is this is just going to make capping games harder and more random than it is in NFL right now because teams will start to all be somewhat equal in talent.

Great News ! I hope they return to reality and have to get a real job. Apparently making Millions of Dollars a year is beneath them.

Why so much loathing for the players?

We are in the middle of a financial crisis and these fat cats are crying about not making enough $$ when some are making 15 Million and up a year ! Total Joke and besides I don't watch or wager on the NBA anyway !

How is playing in the NBA, or playing any sport professionally not a real job? :think2:

Well, many people are in financial hardships due to their own stupidity. Too many low wage earners live beyond their means. As for the players, I have no complaints, they have a unique talent. Anyone with unique talents makes an immense amount of money. Why don't people complain when Adam Sandler or Nick Cage stole $20M a movie.

Huge difference ! I've never heard of Adam Sandler or Nick Cage crying. I can go see their Movies for $ 3.00 almost anytime I want. What's the cost to see a NBA game ? I think I know why... Do you ?:ohno:

Now I think the players do have some leverage. Some of these owners JUST spent 300, 400 million dollars on teams... It might hurt the players more in the short term to be out of paychecks, but ultimately the owners have more to lose in the long run. Players can take the money they've made and go play over seas. The owners will be sitting there with a 350 million dollar tab for something that doesn't exist.

I knew that would be your argument, but driving a Ferrari isn't for everybody, some can afford it, others can't. There is no right to be able to attend NBA games.

Your avg fan is always going to say Oh the players are greedy. They know who the players are, a bunch of 20 something black millionaires. Its tough for people to relate to them and feel their plight. However, anyone who is thinking logically and doesn't think the players have the right to collectively bargain is ridiculous.

Players didn't go on strike, they got LOCKED OUT. They were making 57%, agreed to around 51/50 range and now owners want 47.

I hope those players stay out for 8-10 years and really teach those owners a lesson.

so if an employee under-performs they can't just fire him?

how is it set up now?

ok player you suck, you're fired here's the rest of your pay?

the owners want to change it to:

ok player you suck, you're demoted to the d squad with a pay cut?

who do these players think they are? government workers?

Sorry but you're still missing my point. For me it's not a matter of being able to afford it at all. Anyone that has ever known me knows that I had 2 season tickets to Blazer tickets that were close to the best seats in the house. They were dead center, 3 rd. row from the front. I also owned another 2 tickets that were up high. However the price per ticket started out in 1970 for the 2 great seats was $ 7.50 per ticket as I recall. Bear in mind the Blazers had a great team in the 70's with Bill Walton and Maurice Lucas etc. leading the Portland Trailblazers to an NBA Championship. However the player salaries started going through the ceiling and those same tickets now sell for Hundreds ! For me the NBA game is less entertaining than back in the " Red Hot and Rolling " Trailblazer years and yet the price of tickets has gone up 20 fold ! Why ? Ridiculous player demands and salaries. If you want to pay $ 200 to see a boring NBA game.... Keep going to the games. I will pay the $ 3.00 to see a great Movie at the Matinee here in Vegas. To each his own ! It's got nothing to do with whether I can afford it ! It's got everything to do with value ! The greed has taken all value out of attending NBA games. I hope both the owners and players take about 10 years off until the ticket prices return to earth.

We've been in a recession, the economy is in a toilet, and these idiots are complaining that they're only making $10 million instead of $20 million.

I'm one of the biggest NBA fans out there, but these dumb-ass players can go F themselves. Now that they don't have a job, maybe they can
join the occutard movement, live in a tent, and shit on the side-walk.

The NBA players are getting bad advice from their advocates, who are going to make a killing from a prolonged lockout.

Because these advocates (i.e. lawyers) are constantly in their faces, the players are not able to see the economic realities surrounding them.

The economy is still limping, unemployment is high and there is a lot of uncertainty. Hard-working people across North America (and Europe) are losing their jobs, having to work longer hours, and take pay cuts. These are some of the same people who pay to see NBA games, buy merchandise, etc.

NBA players are not immune from these realities. They are going to have to take a hit like everyone else. Unfortunately for them, they're now going to take a bigger hit because of the decision they made to reject the latest offer.
