I was downsized 16 months ago after 27 years and I am lucky that I am able to retire but man I must admit I'm getting extremely bored at times.

Was thinking about that

Didn't you say you lost 80 lbs? Don't you like working out? Your a fit fighting machine you should enjoy your extra time off.

I gone from 320lbs to 285lbs. It's been a year and 4 months. I've hit a plateua at 285.

I run and lift weights. I think the lifting weights part is slowing down my weight loss.

I wish I had more time off to enjoy.

My dad just retired 2 months ago after 40 years of working at the same place from 7:30 to 3:30 5 days a week. I think he likes not having to work, but I can tell he gets bored as hell somedays. My parents live out in the country and my mom says he will drive to town (35 miles one way) 2-3 times a day to run a pretty meaningless errand.

I've suggested it to my dad so ill suggest it to you cause id do it if I was retired. Go to your local golf course and see about getting a marshall job. You just drive around the golf course for 8 hrs once a week, and make sure ppl aren't acting stupid. You don't get paid for it, but you get to play golf for free whenever you want. If you don't already play golf, nows a great time to take up the sport

You get paid for going to work because there is someplace you'd rather be....for most folks.

Now if work happened to be enjoyable and fun, maybe a Playboy photographer, yacht captain, or something, then continue working....if you have an unpleasant job like being a prison guard or postal worker then certainly leave it behind.

Clearly one could find meaningful volunteer work of some sort that is enjoyable if you need something to do.

I've never had a job that I would perform without pay, tending bar was the closest I ever came to an enjoyable job.

Yes that's true. I am at the gym every morning at 6AM. Then I help my parents out as they are both in their late 80's. I guess I'm just in a rut. Add more cardio and lift only a few times a week and eat healthy and the weight will come off.

Your right, if I had more will power with diet and snacking I would definitely lose weight faster. I just turned 47 and I'm very happy with my progress. My body fat % has definitely gone done faster than my weight. But I need to push harder, I'd love to hit 270 and take it from there.

The hard part is eating healty. I'm diabetic, I love going out for breakfast before work. I've cut out any kind of potato's from my diet, so I always substitute fruit, tomatos or cottage cheese for my hash browns and fries. Breakfast is lots of Coffee, 2-3 eggs, fruit, toast or pancakes. Small lunch, small dinner but I do get the munchies. I don't munch healthy, what are some good healthy late evening snacks?

I work out hard. I jog 60 minutes at an 10:45 a mile pace. I'm pretty sure I can beat most 285 pounder's in a 6 mile race. I carry all my excess weight in my belly. My legs, arms and chest are solid.

Don't worry Harry - soon enough you'll be shoveling 3 feet of snow a day and you'll spend plenty of time outside ...... you won't be bored.

I retired in Dec/ 2007 at age of 69 to give my wife who was 54 better care as she had several health issues. I lost janet[ my wife] in a house fire this past june of 2011. I was offered a parttime position as a consultant & as a buyer for a small pre owned dealer of vehicles in oct/2010, most of the work was from my residence via p/c 2-3 hrs a day, so i was still able to give my wife the care she needed. But after losing her in the tragic fire at our residence this past june/2011 i now go into to the office at noon & leave around 6:00 pm & noon to 3:30 on sat's & off sun. It keeps my mind occupied & am around younger people as i am 73 yrs old, i really don't consider it work as i spent over 40 yrs in the auto business before i retired in Dec/2007. I can come & go as i please & when i am at work i am able to place my bets as i choose to do, as i spend most of my work time on the pc. The owner knows i gamble & said i can do whatever i wanted while at work on the p/c, he pays me about $800-$850 a week . I don't know how long i will continue, but as long as i have pretty good health & can go at whatever pace i choose & if it does not become a job to me, i will continue for a while, sorry to blab so long, lol.

No one needs to work

Food and water, sleep and shelter. Those are needs. Medication sometimes

Wearing a paper hat and pushing a mop around ... That is not something people do because they want to, not because they need to. At one time I felt like there was enough of an incentive to do that sort of shit. Now I don't want to it, so I don't bother with it at all. Maybe I'll go back to it some day
