14k Gold pins have value

I 'm trying to find a good buyer in Boise for ya

http://www.cointalk.com/t195178/#post1305194

They will move this to their rubber room/ site promo equivelant area soon.

I can call my local guy for a more exact price tomorrow.

You can't sell to him but we get a price to expect.

Throw it on a triple beamer and weigh it ( discount any stones)....you must know a somebody with one being such a HOT dude with chicks like a poorer Charlie Sheen.

Seriously $30 / gram for 14k and I'll adjust that when I call my old friend Steve, it's reasonably close.

next step is weigh what you have, then I can tell you if if the price offered is reasonable.

it is clearly worth money, Jake....as long as it is real, sounds like it is.

real gold has a heavy feel to it, if it has that hefty feel to it, it is almost certainly real.

that's the next test, is it heavy ?

the 14k stamp is a great sign, but can be faked.

no harm in running by a jeweler or coin dealer in Boise.

Hey Dougie... What does LGB 14K mean? I have one or two that say 14K EMB which pretty much means plated, but I can't figure out what the LGB means before the 14K...

LGB likely means nothing, like the designer's initials of that piece of jewelry according to my man Steve who is an honest buyer...It had no meaning to me

Steve pays $14.25 per pennyweight ( DWT) for 14 karat gold scrap. a Pennyweight is 5% of a troy ounce, do the math to convert it to grams or whatever, then deduct say 25 % and you will have a reasonable price....some buyers will offer 10% of that.

that 14.25 per pennyweight is real with no deductions. so you don't need to reduce it by 25% , BTW !

If it is crap like fake stones in a class ring, that needs a correction ( deduction)....glass is not gold.

lgb14k is a good sign, IMO

it's like an artist called Lawrence Gregory Branford signing off his work as being authentic.

The easiest test is .....is it heavy ?

Tungsten weighs almost the same as gold , so it can be faked that way.

gold, even 14k ( 58% pure ) is heavy, so that is the first test....it should feel noticeably heavy.

Yeah it feels heavier than it looks. The "LGB" is the big pin I have. It's actually a pin for "The National Association of State Racing Commissioners" and is marked "Idaho". Something to do with horse racing...

Hey Doug here's an update... Took a few of them into the pawn shop today. They didn't really offer me jack for the plated ones but the guy said he'd offer over $100 for the big, heavy pin. He said that the weight seemed right, but to test he'd have to make a big scratch in the back to make sure it is not plated. Is that normal? Figured I'd ask you before I agree to anything.

It's yours if ya want it. Do you know how to do the scratch test? The guy said he wasn't 100% sure the thing was solid gold so I don't want to sell ya a plated pin at solid price...

I'm not so sure on how to test jewelry , but it seems there should be something less destructive available.

This stuff has changed a great deal since the 70's.

IMO, If you make a big scratch to test it, it certainly has become junk gold.

plated gold is worthless, that is a property of gold....it is highly Malleable , an ounce can be hammered out so thin that it covers an acre ( exagerration ).

I would choose coin form for gold over jewelry.

What's the difference between plum and plated ?

I've got a gold horseshoe ring that says 14kp. I had it appraised at Levy's fine jewlery about 10 years ago and the guy said it was 14 karat plum and he appraised it at about $600.

Then a few months ago i decided to try to sell it figuring it might be worth a grand since gold has increased since the $600 appraisal , and i went to 2 pawn shops and both said 14kp meant plated and they gave me offers of $75 and $90 , so i kept the ring.

The guys at the pawn shops weren't even interested in the 14K plated stuff I had. You might have just went to some crooked shops because offering that much for "plated" is crazy from my experience.

Yeah that's what i was thinking. The place that gave me the 600 appraisal doesnt buy , i just happened to be shopping in there and the clerk complimented me on my ring so i asked him if he could appraise it and he ooed and ahhed and went on and on about 14 karat plum and something about the pureness of the gold. .. but i cant find any substantial info about the 14kp marking , some say plum and some say plated i dont know who to trust.
