Hollywood churns out a lot of mediocre movies.
Looking over the Academy Awards winners and nominees over the last
decade, there (IMHO) have been very few truly great movies made
in the last 10 years.
2010: Winner for best picture "King's Speech" - great? no, very good, maybe.
2009: Winner best pic: "The Hurt Locker" - great? nope. very good, maybe
2008: Slumdog Millionaire: Not great, maybe very good
2007: No Country for Old Men: Not great, maybe very good
2006: The Departed: Not great, maybe very good
2005: Crash: Not great, maybe very good
2004: Million Dollar Baby: Not great, maybe very good
2003: Lord of the Rings, Return of the Ring: Some would say great - not my cup of tea
2002: Chicago: Not great, very good
2001: A Beautiful Mind: Not great, maybe very good
2000: Gladiator: I really liked it, would I call it great... nah - but very good
1999: American Beauty: Not great... very good
1998: Shakespeare in Love: Not great
And so on...
The last movie I see on that list I think was truly great was
"Saving Private Ryan" which was a nominee in 1998. So, for me
13 years of a lot of mediocre films, some good, and a few great.
In the middle 90's I see a bunch of very good to great movies:
1992: Unforgiven - very good
1992: A few Good Men - almost Great
1993: Schilndler's List - Great
1994: Forrest Gump - Very good
1994: Shawshank Redemption - Great
1995: Braveheart - almost Great
1996: Fargo - Very Good
1997: Titanic - Very Good
1997: Good Will Hunting - Very Good
For my taste, there are only three truly great movies in the last 20 years:
Schindler's List, Shawshank Redemption, Saving Private Ryan
