Kyle Orton began the season as the Broncos' starting quarterback. Now he's unemployed.
Denver has waived Orton, who gave way to Tim Tebow during a Week 5 loss to the Chargers. Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway confirmed the move in his podcast Tuesday.
If Orton does hit the waiver wire and perhaps free agent market, the Bears (Orton's previous team) would seem to be a likely suitor in light of the broken thumb suffered by QB Jay Cutler on Sunday. The AFC West rival Chiefs may also be in the market for a quarterback in light of Tyler Palko's struggles Monday night. The Texans are about to play their first game without Matt Schaub, though replacement Matt Leinart has been in their system for two years now.
Orton, who was nearly traded to the Dolphins after the lockout, is currently slated for free agency in 2012. His career record is 33-33, though he is 6-21 over his last 27 starts dating to 2009.
He was generally efficient in the pass-centric offense of former Broncos coach Josh McDaniels. But after playing well in preseason for new coach John Fox, Orton struggled once the real games began in 2011 and Denver started 1-4. The specter of the polarizing but locally popular Tebow constantly hung over him.
Orton has completed 58.7% of his passes this season for 979 yards eight TDs and seven INTs.
