Police investigate allegations of point shaving by Univ. of Hawaii football players

By Associated Press,

HONOLULU — An anonymous letter to the University of Hawaii is raising allegations that football players are involved in a point-shaving scheme, and police are investigating.

The university released a statement Tuesday after KITV was the first to call asking about the probe.

UH President M.R.C. Greenwood says the admissions office received the letter Nov. 3 and university officials immediately alerted Honolulu police and the NCAA.

The letter accuses unnamed players of intentionally playing poorly to affect the final score.

A university spokeswoman declined to say if the letter is referring to Hawaii’s current season.

After winning 10 games in 2010, the Warriors are 5-6 this year with two games left in the regular season. They’re 3-7-1 against the point spread and have failed to beat the spread in nearly two months.

Dear Admissions Office,

I am officially writing this letter to accuse unnamed football players of intentionally playing poorly to affect the final score.

You can call the police to confirm that they have failed to beat the spread in nearly two months.

You should really really really look into this.

Thank You,

The Honolulu Police Department said on Tuesday that they are not opening a criminal investigation of alleged point shaving regarding the University of Hawaii football team because of a lack of information.

The school’s president says the office of admissions received an anonymous letter on November 3rd alleging point shaving by members of the football team.

The letter came a couple of days before the Utah State-Hawaii game on Nov. 5. In that game, the Warriors opened at -3.5 to -4 at most sportsbooks.

However, according to an article on Covers.com, the spread opened with Hawaii favored by 7.5 points at the Las Vegas Wynn on Oct. 30 but dropped to -3.5 by Nov. 1. This is confirmed in the Sports Options odds archive.

The article also states that "one offshore book" opened at -9. The book they may have been referring to was BetVegasVic.com, which opened at -9 on Oct. 30. That number was down to -3.5 the next day.

A couple books known to post odds early, including 5Dimes.com and HeritageSports.com, opened the game at -6.5 on Oct. 30. By kickoff, 5Dimes had the line at -3.5 and Heritage had it at -4.

As for the actual game, Hawaii blew a 28-7 halftime lead and lost 35-31. They’re 5-6 on the year and 4-7 against the spread.
