Anyone ever have a HD TV "calibrated" before?

Just purchase a 51 inch Plasma as well as a home theater system, BlueRay and Harmony remote. This thing is wicked cool. Bought it from Best Buy and had them set the whole system up for me. Installer was telling me about a service of calibration they offer. He says it makes the colors in your TV almost life like. They want $200 to come back and do it. He wasn't pressuring me, just explaining what it does a bit. Anyone have a TV calibrated?

And another question?

What are some "don't miss" Bluray movies I can buy or rent that will maximize and get the most out of this system?

Yeah, I also purchased the calibration package from Best Buy (which comes with a few years of Geek Squad service if I am not mistaken), it did make a considerable difference in picture quality. In addition, tv will run more efficiently/cooler. I would definitely recommend The Dark Knight and Inception.

or try to get a price match from the store so you can support local employment. If everything ends up being done online, it will be hell.

The nice thing about professional calibration is that they can calibrate sources other than dvd/bluRay. It's easy to calibrate a source where you provide the material (burn a test pattern to a disc, insert disc, and adjust settings) but it's much more difficult on cable, antenna, or satellite sources. As long as the calibration isn't costing more than 10-15% of what you've invested, it seems like a wise idea.

You may however want to check out Avsforum.com for other people who can do it - i imagine there are better professionals for this than the geeksquad dudes.

Has anyone tried the forum and actually done it successfully and been satisfied with the results?

I'm pretty happy with picture I receive on my HD TV but willing to try it if it improves my picture.

I used to the calibrations. The average person doesnt really need to do it BUT it will make a difference with the TV.

That Pioneer 500M is a bad ass display. I think it was in the Kuro series. GREAT monitor.

Honestly, I wouldnt pay for the calibration. Go buy this device and do it yourself. Then you can do it for other TVs, yours and friends.

Its called a Spyder Calibration tool. I think they are up to the Spyder 3 Pro but I havent used one in some time. You can find one for under $150.

This is also a good idea. The point being, you can't calibrate your cable/satalite/antenna sources without one (or similar). Here's a link to Amazon (well, for the elite model - I'm sure the pro model would be more than satisfactory):
