There are routs, there are blowouts, and then there are epic one-sided losses that would make the likes of Woody Hayes blush. The 100-2 victory by Pikeville (Ky.) Independent Middle School against Kimper (Ky.) Elementary and Middle School at the Pike County Preseason Tournament falls squarely in the last category. Now, the school district's superintendent and school board are allegedly considering canceling the team's entire season because of a perceived lack of sportsmanship shown in the 98-point drubbing.

As first reported by ScoutsFocus' Joe Davis, Pikeville raced out to a 70-0 lead in the game by halftime, eventually cruising through a second-half performance in which Pikeville coach Bryan Johnson allegedly told his team to "stop playing defense" in an attempt to let Kimper score. You can see highlights from the mismatch in the first 40 seconds of the video above.

To say that the game was always going to be a mismatch is an understatement. Kimper is a small school of only 180 total students, and features players as young as 11 on its squad. That's a stark contrast to Pikeville, which might indeed boast one of the nation's most talented squads of eighth-graders; the same team which routed Kimper rolled past Virgie (Ky.) Middle School 75-32 in the championship game of the tournament. The Pikeville squad consists of the best members of the school's sixth- and seventh-grade teams from the past two seasons, when Johnson served as the head coach of those squads. He also coached the most select players from those teams on the AAU circuit, giving the team a cohesiveness that stands in stark contrast to the Kimper squad.

As one might expect, the full statistics from such a one-sided romp are even more shocking than Pikeville's 70-point half. Perhaps the most astonishing is the following: Pikeville led 25-0 just 1:48 into the game, when the team dropped its full court press and Johnson removed all five of his team's starters. Do the math, and one quickly realizes that Pikeville essentially scored a bucket every eight seconds when its starters were in the game.

According to Davis, who was informed of the situation by Johnson, that first two-minute span and the continued offensive performance by the Pikeville reserves have been enough to prod the Pikeviile Independent School Board into quietly considering canceling the entire Pikeville basketball season. Whether or not the school district would cancel one of its team's seasons because of a single blowout remains to be seen, but if ever there was a one-sided scoreline that could elicit such a response, the 100-2 rout might be it.

Still, while Johnson may have always been due the largest share of criticism for letting his team rack up a 98-point victory in a preseason tournament against an overmatched foe, the fact that the two teams were even playing in the same bracket deserves further inspection as well. Sure, the two teams play on the same Kentucky middle school circuit, but that hardly justifies setting the two up against one another when such a game isn't absolutely necessary.

Does that mean that the Kimper head coach, Chase Haley, deserves criticism himself? Perhaps, though it's hard to find much fault with a coach looking for somewhere for his young team to play games before the regular season heats up.
In fact, that might be the worst news for Kimper after the game: The team still has Pikeville on its regular-season schedule in mid-December. Of course, that rematch would be contingent on the entire Pikeville season not being canceled first, and that may be less of an eventuality than any of us might imagine at first blush.

It got under my skin that the team that won is in trouble. They clearly weren't pouring it on. They stopped the full court press. They pull starters. It was 70-0 at half! Means they only score 30 points in the 2nd have, they clearly toned it down. The coach even told the players to stop defense. No reason at all for these kids to lose a season

Superintendent was probably pissed because he had Kimper +97 with his local bookie and lost.

One of the stupidest things I've ever heard. The winning team played their starters only 2 minutes. The backups played the rest of the 1st half. Then in the 2nd half the coach of the winning team told his team to stop playing defense to let the other team score. What the fuck else should they do? Carry the losing team around on their shoulders while handing them the ball? People are getting dumber...

When Dajuan Wagner put up 100 against a tech school, he got front page of the newspaper.

Kimper's coach shouldn't have entered his team in the tournament in the first place. The team is made up of kids as young as 11 playing against a team stacked with talented Grade 8 kids.

I've coached soccer a few years now for my kids. I had one sitution where my kids were clearly the better team. By 5 minutes into the first half of the game (20 min each half), we were up 10-0. I pulled my players aside and told them to back-off. I explained to them how would they feel being on the opposite end of the beating and they understood. Well, after backing off the last 15 minutes of the first half we went into the second half leading 15-0. In the second half, I dropped down to 2 players on the field at a time vs their 5. We still scored. I finally ended up telling my players not to pass the centerline and they weren't allowed to go on offense.

It's a tough situation when you're playing a team when you are clearly better than them - but your right, the kids on the winning team shouldn't suffer.

That's what they teach kids today, that if you win or dominate, somehow you're doing something wrong. They give trophies to the last place team because they don't want anybody feeling bad.

Even if the score doesn't show it, they didn't pile on and even if they did, I don't see anything wrong with it. The only thing I don't want to see is the dominating team mocking the other team...other than that: It's a competition, so when entering I want to compete against someone else and expect him therefore to give a full effort. If he beats me decisively, so be it. But I'd feel worse if my opponent just showed up and was forced to hold back...because in the end, the whole point of such a competition is to give it your best shot and compete with others and have a good time by doing so (and be around people, maybe make some friends, etc.).
And I'm saying that after playing on winning teams, that beat opponents by 70+ in basketball, 20+ in baseball and 10+ in soccer, but also being part of losing teams, who got crushed by the same margins.

In the end it's just a game and in my opinion, if a bad defeat impacts the self esteem of any kid, his parents and/or his coach should probably question themselves because the importance of said game has been blown out of proportion and the most important fact in youth sports, being around friends and having fun doing sports, obviously hasn't been stressed enough but instead winning has.
I know that winning is more fun than losing, but I also remember having a great time during a soccer season where we regularly got beat by double digit margins.

I coach a select 5th grade basketball team that my son plays on. We won a game last year as 4th graders 46-0.

We have 8 players and pulled the best 3 for the entire 4th quarter and you can't press in 4th grade in Nebraska so we couldn't pull back on that (or at least not at this tournament). But is it more embarassing to not play defense at all? Even for the backups, what good does that do for either team? You expect those that don't usually get to play so much to not try?

I feel bad for this team and I felt bad about drilling some young kids last year but I think the coach handled it the best he could.

At least to me it would be more embarassing to know, they are just showing up for the rest of the game without really playing...under those circumstances takes all the fun out of the game. Add in the fact, that you're taking playing time away from the backups and one more thing, those idiots on that school board should think about: At least I was told when growing up and doing tons of sports, that it's not all about winning, but giving it your best effort all the time. So teach those kids not to humiliate or mock their opponent, maybe not pile on unneccassarily, but what kind of message do you send them right now? That it's wrong trying the best you can? That you get punished if you gave 100%? Great lesson learned for life ...

I would think that a mercy rule would serve a purpose here. A 30 point second half deficit and the game is over sounds fair.

May as well stop keeping score if you buy into this PC 'everybody wins' nonsense in kids sports.

Occupy Pike Co. Kentucky!

these elite one-per-centers are ruining basketball for the 99% of teams that can't play

cancel their season, jail the coach and give the losing team a trophy for working hard.

Maybe the super should look into why there are so much talent at one school. I bet half those kids do not live in the proper district.

:):)

Yep...Kimper was the last leg of his 5-team middle school parlay. The other four winning games finished after this one tipped off, so he couldn't hedge...and when it was 70-0 at halftime, there was no value in the 2H line.

I would have thought at some point in the 1H when it was 40-0 or 60-0 the two coaches would had a discussion that this game was not helping either team in any way, and stopped playing.
