THE STORY: The dismissal of Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio earlier this week was surprising only in its timing. Barring a stunning turnaround, there will be few eyebrows raised when Norv Turner is shown the door by San Diego Chargers management at the end of another underachieving season. Against that backdrop, the Jaguars will host the Chargers on Monday night in a matchup of teams that have a combined two wins – both by Jacksonville – since Oct. 9. San Diego has lost six consecutive games to see its playoff hopes all but evaporate.

TV: ESPN, 8:30 p.m. ET. LINE: Chargers -3, O/U 41

ABOUT THE CHARGERS (4-7): After avoiding its customary slow start by winning four of its first five, San Diego hasn’t won since blowing a 21-10 halftime lead at the New York Jets. QB Philip Rivers didn’t throw an interception in last’s week’s 16-13 loss to Denver after getting picked off 10 times in his previous five games. Among the few positives last week was the performance of RB Ryan Mathews, who rushed for a career-high 137 yards.

ABOUT THE JAGUARS (3-8): Newly appointed interim coach Mel Tucker will need a magic wand to fix an offense that ranks dead last in scoring (12.5 points per game). Tucker said he’s sticking with rookie QB Blaine Gabbert, the league’s lowest-rated passer at 62.2. Jacksonville averages a wretched 131.3 yards passing. Expect to see a heavy dose of RB Maurice Jones-Drew, who is second in the league with 1,040 yards. He was a yard shy of his fourth 100-yard game in last week’s 20-13 loss to Houston.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. San Diego is mired in its longest losing streak since dropping nine straight spanning the 2002 and 2003 seasons.

2. It’s been a turbulent week in Jacksonville. Along with Del Rio’s ouster, WRs coach Johnny Cox was fired and team owner Wayne Weaver announced he was selling the team.

3. The Chargers have owned December since 2006, winning 20 of 22 games.

The SportsOptions exclusive game analysis for this game:

<TABLE style="WIDTH: 550px" class=Lhead2 border=0 cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=2 align=center><TBODY><TR><TD class=Ldata>San Diego continued their ugly slide last week with a 16-13 OT loss at home to Denver as -4½ point favorites. Ryan Mathews ran for a career-high 137 yards and QB Philip Rivers completed just 19-of-36 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown for the Chargers (4-7), who have dropped six straight on the heels of a 4-1 start. San Diego's last win came at Denver on October 9th, a 29-24 victory. The Chargers are on their longest losing streak since ending 2001 with nine straight defeats and are last place in the AFC West, three games behind Oakland with five games to play. On a bright note, Rivers did not throw an interception for just the second time this year. He leads the NFL this season with 17 picks. Antonio Gates caught a game-high six passes for 49 yards.

Jacksonville comes off a 20-13 home loss to Houston as +6 point underdogs. Blaine Gabbert completed 13-of-29 passes for 136 yards and an interception for the Jaguars (3-8), who have lost two in a row. Luke McCown connected on 7-of-11 passes for 62 yards in relief after Gabbert was yanked for being ineffective. Maurice Jones-Drew carried the ball 18 times for 99 yards and caught four passes for 67 more yards in the loss as well. Coach Jack Del Rio, who was fired on Monday, benched Gabbert, the rookie out of Missouri, in the fourth quarter after six sacks and an interception. McCown led the team to a late field goal, but his fourth-down pass with about a minute remaining fell incomplete. Jacksonville's only touchdown came on a 38-yard fumble return by Ashton Youboty on the opening series.

San Diego and Jacksonville met last year with the Chargers posting a 38-13 home win as -7 point favorites. San Diego is 18-3 ATS against AFC South opponents and 11-5 SU and ATS as a road fav of -3 points or less, as well as 12-5 ATS in December. Jacksonville comes in 16-34-1 ATS when playing on grass and 4-12 ATS in December games. The Jags are also 4-11-1 ATS when scoring 15 points or less in their previous game and 3-8 ATS as a dog of +3 points or less.
