If you think something is wrong with the BCS system don’t look at the top of the rankings, look at the bottom. Sure there was token controversy about who should play LSU but if you look on down the BCS top 25 it really makes me wonder. At #24 the BCS lists Texas (7-5) and at #25 they list Auburn (7-5). Are you shitting me. Neither of those two teams is listed in the Top 25 by the AP, USA Today, or by ESPN. Two teams with 7-5 records.
Let’s take a look at who the BCS could have listed instead of those two stiffs.
Here are some other teams who finished the season 7-5: Iowa, Louisville, Mia Fl, Mia O, Nevada, N Caroline, NC State, SMU, Utah, Utah St, Washington, W Kentucky, W Michigan, and oh yeah how about Missouri who beat Texas.
Teams with better record are: N. Illinois (10-3), Cinn (9-4), BYU (9-3), Ohio (9-4), and following teams finished at 8-4 – Florida St, FIU, La Lafayette, La Tech, Toledo, Rutgers, Temple, Virginia, Wyoming, and oh yeah how about Tulsa whose only 4 losses were to top 10 teams.
The BCS is a joke plain and simple. It is what it is.

The Human polls determine the top 5 or 10, while the computer rankings really influence the later part of the BCS rankings. Either way you look at it, it's fucked. All you have to do is look at how the Coaches and Harris voters pick. 3 Harris voters had Oklahoma State at 6 with teams like Houston, Southern Miss and Boise ranked higher (15 voters had them 4th or lower...really? They won the toughest conference this year. Yes, the Big 12 was better top to bottom this year than the SEC. Cowboys DESERVE 3rd place at worse.) Saban put Stanford 3rd and Oklahoma State 4th. All the SEC voting coaches picked Alabama second, which is what I'd expect as all of the Big 12 coaches voted Okie State number 2, except for....wait for it....Missouri, which is SEC bound. If that doesn't tell you what it's all about, nothing will. Bring back the old bowl tie-ins. That was great and was just like a playoff. In some years a number of wild scenarios came up allowing a lower ranked team to win it.

I agree and maybe when the bowls are done select two teams for one more game for all the marbles.

Preconcieved biases and agendas have made all of this happen. It's really pretty sad for the sport. Take a look at how Troy Calhoun voted and you'll see just what a joke the BCS system is. Two polls go into consideration for the BCS. Letting coaches vote in a poll as important as the BCS is simply ridiculous. I guarantee you I've seen many more games this year than any of these coaches who are actually busy out there coaching. Half of these guys are probably letting their graduate assistants fill out the form for them each week. The bottom line is a coach can have financial incentives by voting his team high and the nearest team lower. So the coaches poll shouldn't even come into consideration for the BCS.

you guys crack me guy...get your panties in a bunch because of who is ranked #24? geezus, the time it must have taken to put all that info together with records, searching which coach voted for which team, etc.

btw the Big 12 as of today is now in favor of a "+1" system. shocker, eh? too bad they were so shortsighted back in 2008 when the sec commish brought it to the table. now if the Big 10 (or whatever they call themselves now) hop aboard I believe we got us a +1 for 2012.

It's the major reason the AP decided to pull out and not allow their poll to be used in the computations. Having coaches vote does no one any good. The AP realized it was a dog and pony show after the Mack Brown UT lobby-fest from 2004.

AP made call with poll's integrity in mind

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- It looks as if the Bowl Championship Series is headed for another major overhaul.
The Associated Press has told the BCS to stop using its college football poll to determine which teams play for the national title and in the most prestigious bowl games.
Since the BCS was implemented in 1998 by officials from the Big East, Big 12, Big Ten, Atlantic Coast Conference, Pac-10, Southeastern Conference and Notre Dame, the formula it uses to rank teams has been tweaked almost every year. But the AP poll and the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll have always been an integral part.
The AP said such use was never sanctioned and had reached the point where it threatened to undermine the independence and integrity of the poll.
The AP sent BCS coordinator Kevin Weiberg a cease-and-desist letter, dated Dec. 21, stating that use of the poll is unlawful and harms the AP's reputation.
"We respect the decision of the Associated Press to no longer have its poll included in the BCS standings," Weiberg said in a statement Tuesday. "Since the inception of the BCS, the AP poll has been part of our standings. We appreciate the cooperation we have received from the organization in providing rankings on a weekly basis. We will discuss alternatives to the Associated Press poll at the upcoming BCS meetings and plan to conclude our evaluation of the BCS standings formula, including any other possible changes, by our April meeting."
Where the BCS goes from here won't be determined for a while, but even before the AP made its poll off limits Weiberg had said that the BCS planned to look into the possibility of using a selection committee to create the bowl matchups, much like the NCAA Division I basketball tournament.
This season, the AP and coaches poll were given more weight than ever in the BCS standings. Each poll accounted for one-third of a team's BCS grade and total points were factored in, not just ranking, which was the case before.
A compilation of six computer rankings made up the final third of teams' BCS grade.
The new system put heighten scrutiny on the two polls.
In its letter, the AP said some of its poll voters had indicated they might no longer participate because of concerns over having their reporters be so closely involved in the process of determining which teams play where.
"By stating that the AP poll is one of the three components used by BCS to establish its rankings, BCS conveys the impression that AP condones or otherwise participates in the BCS system," the letter said. "Furthermore, to the extent that the public does not fully understand the relationship between BCS and AP, any animosity toward BCS may get transferred to AP. And to the extent that the public has equated or comes to equate the AP poll with the BCS rankings, the independent reputation of the AP poll is lost."
The latest BCS formula was installed after Southern California, the No. 1 team in both the media and coaches poll, was left out of the BCS title game last season. LSU beat Oklahoma for the BCS title, and USC won the AP title, creating the type of split championship situation that, in part, the BCS was created to avoid.
But the new system has also come under fire.
For the first time in the BCS era, three teams from major conferences -- Southern California, Oklahoma and Auburn -- finished unbeaten in the regular season. Auburn was left out of the Orange Bowl with the same 12-0 record held by USC and Oklahoma.
Texas passed California for the last at-large bid in the final BCS standings, and had many lamenting the BCS.
The ESPN/USA Today poll caught the brunt of the criticism in the Texas-Cal argument. Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen and Cal coach Jeff Tedford both called for the coaches to make their ballots public. That request was denied.
The AP votes are public information, and the final individual ballots were published the same day as the final BCS standings.
"The Associated Press has not at any time given permission to the Bowl Championship Series to use its proprietary ranking of college football teams," the AP said in a statement Tuesday. "This unauthorized use of the AP poll has harmed AP's reputation and interfered with AP's agreements with AP poll voters. To preserve its reputation for honesty and integrity, the AP is asking the BCS to discontinue its unauthorized use of the AP poll as a component of BCS rankings."

No panties in a bunch on our part, I guess panty references are an SEC thing. We are just pointing out how flawed the present system is. So you think Texas deserves to be ranked #24?

they are ranked due to the computers that somehow deem them still a "good" team.
but I agree. who cares who is #23, #24, #25...

we need a playoff. plain and simple

These computer ratings have always seemed screwy to me. Real people with eyes could see that Texas was not a top 25 team if they watched them play. Not picking on Texas but they were mentioned in the thread. I have never been a believer in these computer polls.

That said, the human polls have too many biases, agendas, and politics involved in them as well.

Nick Saban voted Stanford ahead of Oklahoma State in the coaches’ poll

that tells you all you need to know about all of this BS. Nick did it simply to help his own team.

Absolutely. I doubt if Saban ever saw Stanford play.

hmm, i thought the petersen stuff was the most egregious. a team walks into his crib, beats them, and he puts them 18th knowing that they needed to be top 16 to make a bcs bowl....then bitches for the next week about boise not making the bcs when he wanted to fuck a fellow non-AQ?

i understand self interest will creep in with ANY vote but anyone that says computers are the solution is an idiot. sagarin still has oklahoma 4th! ha ha

I know it isn't worth making a big deal about who's ranked #24 and #25 BCS but it is interesting, nonetheless...Especially since two teams left off Florida State and BYU (and there are more) if they'd play texas or Auburn, both Texas and Auburn would probably drop football after getting their ass kicked LOL....After Wisconsin beat Nebraska by 28, BCS had Nebraska 5 or 6 spots higher in the rankings

That Auburn team is SHIT!!!!

Texas already beat BYU this year with their 3rd string QB (who has since left UTexas).

The Big 12 had Beebe back then. And stupid decisions are why he's not the commissioner anymore. So don't blame the Big 12 as a whole. Many people wanted it. Beebe didn't. And if you listen to what is really being said here, it's not about getting rid of the polls and just having computers, it's about the entire system, which is broken. Everybody wants a playoff. And at the very least a +1.
