How much money would you need to do all the renovations you want to your house?

And im not talking adding on or anything ridiculous, I think we all would add on here or given if money was unlimited.

We purchased our first house this spring, it's a new construction. Nothing huge but a great house for us none the less, but I shocked the amount of money we need to do everything we want to it.

How much money would you need to do all the renovations you want to your house? And what would it go to?

It amazes me. House was finished in March of 2011.

Yet, If we had $25,000 I could blow through it. Granted the house would have everything done...

Finish basement, including adding half bath. Our basement is around 800 sq, only paritally underground, would be a great poker room / den...

Building back deck.. we have this ugly concrete foundation to what use to be greenhouse that was on the land we bought. Said it would be 25k to remove it. We will build a deck over to make it look nice...

Widening Driveway.. i want to smack the people that did it. suppose to be 2 cars, yet can't open doors when next to each other...

making some changes to the kitchen island... hate the fact that our island doesn't have a slightly raised back with outlets. so out gala style kitchen has everything on one side. would be nice to move some of small appliances over as well as hide some of the mess that happens in the kitchen...

I think this is everything. i wonder how long it's going to take to do all this...Over Under 6 years... sharps pounding the over.. #%()

I could spend 10-15k but it would be foolish.

No way in heck would it increase the value of a 94 Dodge Van enough to justify spending that kinda money.

I think 13k would cover it for me. My house was built in 1975, I bought it in April 2010. 3 bed 2 bath 1355 sq feet, nothing special. The previous owners updated the kitchen about halfway. I've updated, not remodeled, the guest bathroom. Master bath is still outdated as hell, even has swag lighting in there, lol. So I'm guessing I could update the master bath, finish the kitchen (including nicer appliances, new tile, countertops and backsplash), and finish the back patio for 13k or so

Wow - there's a ton and I can't even imagine what it would take ... and my house was built in '94, brick front, siding the rest of the way around. Already had to put a new roof on the place about 5 years ago as the old roof was just terrible. They originally used OPB instead of plywood. It cost over 30k to put the new roof on (I've got a huge house).

For the rest - need to replace the wood on the front windows with vinyl, need to paint the entire inside (having 3 young kids is rough on paint, let me tell you), need to fix a bunch of cabinets in the kitchen ~ the damn hinges broke on a bunch of the cabinets.

Now, if I had a couple 100k, I would put an addition on the baby's room and make it as big as kid #1 and kid #2 room (not really fair that his room is so small), blow out the kitchen out and double the size of it, add a large concrete patio, inground pool, and most important, an easy-on gas generator in case of electric failure. Can't stand it when the power goes out in Buffalo in the winter. Uggg.

Oh yeah - new carpets and re-finish the hard-wood floor. Have Brazilian Cherry floors, and though they are just stunning, they fade in the sun and aren't anywhere as nice and vibrant as they were 10 years ago.

I put 15K into renovations last year, and that doesn't touch what I'd like to do:

5-10K into kitchen
5-10K into master bath
5K into new wooden floors
2-3K into new carpet upstairs

lol well my house built in 1928. Here is a list of everything already done.

roof - 5000
plaster and slats removed and replaced with drywall- 2200

total new kitchen nothing fancy - 7000

moved stairs to basement to add 38 sq ft to kitchen - 1000

new electrical in whole house - 1200

new floors in the entire house - 2400

new furnace and duct work - 4400

water heater - 900

landscaping - ???????????

moved or removed multiple walls - 1600

New paint in every room - ?????

Rebuilt 2 bathrooms - 3000

man I am depressed. I would love to do more but I just can't. I know I am underwater in this house. I can't justify spending anymore. I would love to spend about 22,000 and redo my whole upper floor.

fuck me I jst added that shit up.

We have been re-doing our house a room at a time. Brick ranch built in the the 70's I believe, we bought in 2006.

So far we have...
landscaped the front yard
put down new hardwood in the entryway, entry hallway, dining room, and rec room
recarpeted the main living room, bought a big new TV, put in surround sound
recarpeted 1 bedroom and hallway around bedrooms
pulled carpet up in one bedroom and finished the existing hardwood underneath
redid the spare bathroom all together

Project I'm in the middle of right now is a new kitchen; replastered ceiling, new lighting fixtures, new countertops, new tile floors, painted cabinets w/ new hardware, all to be done by Christmas Eve!

We've put a decent amount into the house so far, and I feel it's a good investment. Even if it doesn't increase the value of the home by leaps and bounds this is where I live man...gotta make it as nice as possible.

To answer OP question, I think after this kitchen I would still like to redo the master bedroom and then extend the existing deck around the house. Right now it doesn't wrap around, and the back of my bar/rec room is floor to ceiling windows looking into the backyard. Would love to take the deck around to there and replace those windows with glass sliding doors. So maybe 10-15k more and I'd be happy for ~7 more years.

Guy i rent from is selling the house from out from under me. built in early 60's barely any updating and the piss poor cheap work is falling apart faster than the original. My driveway is barely wide enough for 1 car and the liberal punks around here passed an ordinance that you cant park anywhere but on a concrete driveway. Already got a ticket for backing my car up to the front door to unload groceries!!

Anyway owner sends a real estate guy out today to look it over and put it on the open market. Guy comes in at 9am, all fired up and ready to roll. I tell him "make yourself at home". He walks around the house and all i can hear is him talking to himself.."Damn"..."Wow' .."SOB"... "How come u have all these window units when there is a central a/c unit out there?"...."Ive seen plungers next to the toilet but thats the 1st time ive ever seen a 75ft roto-rooter machine in 1"...."I sure hope i didnt cut my tire in that hole in the driveway"...."Ughhh is that animals i hear running around in the attic?"......."Do you smell gas?"

Funny thing is he left without even putting up a for sale sign.....guess hes coming back tomorrow.....
