Can anyone give me a hand with this problem? Hopefully someone could walk me through it.

x-5
27=9

The x-5 is an exponent of the 9.

rewrite 27 as 3^3and 9 as 3^2

so 3^3=3^2(x-5)

the bases are now the same so you can set the exponents equal to each other and solve

3=2(x-5)
3=2x-10
13=2x
x=13/2

Thank you very much. I understand it now, gotta make sure the bases are the same.

What if it wasn't as clear as to what the base was?


Something like 8^X=15. Would you have to first find a common base between 8 and 15?

yes, although that particular example would be an ugly one to figure out

You could also convert it to a logarithm form, and use a calculator, though not
sure if that is what you are looking for.

8^x = 15 -> log (base 8) 15 = x

Thanks a lot festering. I think that converting to logarithm is what I have to do to solve for x.
