I can not believe the ridiculous speeding laws in Virginia... She was going 85 in a 70 and was charged with reckless driving which is equivalent to a DUI or a Misdemeanor drug offense ...completely insane! So because she was going 15 miles over the speed limit she faces possible jail time WTF! She has a court date Jan 27th and I had to get her a lawyer at $650.00 up front and $225.00 and hour.
This kid got a 4.0 first semester at VT and has never ever been in any trouble or been in an accident or received a ticket...She is beside herself with worry... You would think they would worry about the fuckin criminals in Virginia???

:smoking:  :WTF:

Gimme some feedback on this........

Just relax buddy. She won't be facing jail and this is nothing like a DUI. Get a lawyer who specializes in traffic cases and she should get off completely...shouldn't cost more than a grand either. I had reckless driving, eluding, and speeding - only penalty I had was going to driving school. Check some more attorneys - there will be several around the courthouse who can help you out for a decent price.

Well I think I got the best lawyer. She is actually the former prosecutor of the county my daughter got the ticket in (botetourt Co.). Obviously, a Virginia lawyer.... she gave me the impression not to worry also, but you run it on goggle and read some of that stuff it is really scary.....Try goggling Reckless Driving Virginia and read that shit whew

I got one in a VA around 6-8 years ago coming home from VA beach. I got a lawyer and he went to court for me and told me to stay home so I didn't have to drive 3 hours and take off work.

They dropped it down to just a fine and 1 point and I never stepped a foot in the courthouse.

An old coworker got a two reckless in VA (Both around 90 in a 65) a year apart and did 60 days in jail on the second 1. He was a good kid, college educated, who was gainfully employed and they still made him serve the time. He had nothing but those 2 speeding tickets on his record.

If I would tell her to never speed again b/c they get really pissy on the second offense.

I live in VA and know lawyers and speeders. I'm fairly sure for a 1st offense the lawyer will have your daughter take a defensive driving course before the court date in exchange for the officer dropping the ticket.

Cujo... live in VA..... know all about speeding tickets..

each county is different and some are notorious for tickets... my friends were coming from PA to visit me, I even warned them about speeding in Nelson County.... they got pulled and got a ticket for 5 over.. smh...

don't freak out at all... I would of told you not even worry about a lawyer.... if she goes and says its her first time... they will either drop it down or completely get rid of it with a drivers class.. usually takes all Saturday.... she can find a class online if she is over 21 and take it that way...

promise its not a big deal, she can just show up. no lawyer and just its her first ticket and apologize... no prob at all...

i literally been pulled over 25 times or more in my life.... im 27 lol

If the attorney is a former prosecuter in the county - she undoubtedly has a lot of grease with the judges, prosecuters, etc. I wouldn't worry about it.

You know why lawyers charge $650 for a speeding ticket? Because it's worth it.

The increase in insurance costs alone would be more than that for the next 3 years, not to mention being able to stay out of jail.

maybe there QL... but in VA 15 over... 1st timer...Without a lawyer... 50% chance judge drops ticket completely... 99% chance that judge drops the severity of it

maybe that $650 buys cujo piece of mind, and that case only he can say if its worth it... but I would of begged him not too... shell be just fine...

and if the judge drops the reckless charge and there is very little on her driving record.. insurance wont go up either.

I knew VA was crazy, but that is the silliest thing I've ever heard. My buddy in NC got a speeding ticket in VA one time, I think it was like 10 over, and he had to drive back to VA to appear in court and missed the first day of March Madness in Vegas. What a freaking joke. He just had to pay the ticket but it was a must appear ticket.

You can go 25 mph over the limit here in IL before it becomes anything more than a pay by mail speeding ticket. The fines go up, but I think they are capped at like $150 unless it's in a construction zone. We even had a cop that was drunker than a skunk get caught going 83 in a 45. Arrested for DUI but got off because he refused any tests. Had to go to driving school for a few hours. And even kept his job so he can keep arresting people for DUI.

wow.. it's $3500 for a DUI... lose your lic for 90 days and that just the first time... Once you hit a 3rd time, its years in prison

about 2 years ago, they made speeding tickets RIDICULOUS.. I think it was like $500 for your basic 10MPH .. bill was approved and everything...

but right before it came out, there was a social uproar, and rightfully so... a lot of them were pulled, but not all....

Least they raised their speedlimits on the major highways though...
