I've never had one before and I hate the damn things, but I sort of need one now. I no longer have a landline or a place to put one ( like a house, apt. etc.). I'm between long-term housing units, so to speak. I barely know how to use a cellphone.

I do have my wife's cellphone billed under my name, but her service ( Sprint) sucks ( in Ct). Is adding another phone to that plan usually cheapest ?

I want just a basic phone for phone calls only, no texting or data stuff. I have to type with a toothpick on a GPS map thing.

Any suggestions for a cellphone hater's cellphone. My minute needs would be minimal. I prefer no contract.

You said Sprint service isn't good in your area.

Which company is popular there, Verizon?

Doug, listen........... I know you said you don't want a 'fancy' phone but trust me, and everyone else on here will back me up on this...... If you're finally going to break down and get a cell phone, get a good one, as in a smart phone.

Ok so you don't know how to use it.
Most of us don't every time we change phones, but you will pick it up quick.

Trust me you won't regret it and you will find how handy a good phone comes in now & then.
Just a small exampole....I was at Best Buy yesterday and was looking for a certain DVD movie, but couldn't think of the name of it, so googled something about it on my phone, and there I had the name of it.
I also scanned the barcodes on some things with my phone I was going to buy that didn't have a price on it.
You can do just about anything on them, including visit these sites.

No Contract is going to cost you more money at any provider though.

Unless you go Boost Phone where you just pay like $50 per month.
Not sure what other companies have them but I'm sure others will chime in...

Is a contract transferable to another area ? For example if I moved from Ct to SC.

Agree completely with Hache...
I'd suggest an iPhone 4s. They are very user friendly. You can just tell it who and what you want to text and it will do it for you.
I just picked one up a month or so ago and I love the thing.

They annoy me. I can be driving and listening to some good music, then the wife gets a useless call from her friend Martha ( Washington) and talks 30 minutes about nothing....or worse she calls me on my landline at "home".

I loathe the idea of being so reachable.

I will check out Sam's.

Wife gets 500 minutes a month with sprint and free incoming and free weekends and free after 9pm, that seems to be enough, but usage is up being "homeless"....I'm not missing my Jan Tax bill, though....or my condo fees and neighbors.

We have no contract with Sprint, have had them for like 10 years.

I guess I finally need a phone....and maybe a job....haven't worked in 9 years.

Any idea how much your wife pays for her package?

I have Sprint as well.
You can add the 2nd line on hers and get the shared plan.
It's 1500 Minutes between the 2 of you.
But any calls to and from other cell phones, even from phones from other companies, are Free and use none of your minutes.
You should never even come close to using all of your minutes unless you talk to people on Land Lines much of the day Monday thru Friday before 7:00 pm.
Same with Date (Internet, etc.) and Texts.... Unlimited
I have 4 lines on my account with this plan in which all 4 phones share the minutes and have never come close to using all of the minutes, and rarely half, since the cell to cell is free.

You just need to find out how much she is paying for that package first to make a decision on what will be best $-wise for you.

I know, I pay the bill. It's about $70 / month for 500 minutes.

I have to get back to raking my step-daughter's leaves now so I can sleep on her couch tonight....

but I have enough money in the bank to buy a house for cash....I like being homeless ( almost)

Verizon is really cheap if you get on a family plan and get everyone on the same bill. I have a Droid with unlimited internet and I pay $57 a month for my own portion. If I just had a cell phone with no internet it would be $27.

That is cheap. My wife and I have Verizon, unlimited min/txt/internet/long distance and its $164 a month. Best service out there though

Doug,

Like has been said you can try to add to wife's plan. I'd recommend Tracfone prepaid for you though. The minutes are good for up to a year depending on the minutes you purchase; I haven't had a problem with mine.

Yeah, why not a Tracphone. You don't sound like you will use it much. You could get a phone for under 20$, buy minutes every 4-6 weeks.

I'd get a Boost Mobile if you have it in your area. It's around $50 for unlimited, flat contract. Boost is owned by Sprint or Verizon.

Just looked it up and yeah, Boost is owned by Sprint.

Thanks, this or Boost seems best for me.

I tried to add on to the Sprint thing wife has , but got a bunch of "Peggys" in C/S, two hours of that ( mostly wife talking to them)....then she's a super-bitch for at least 24 hours.

I don't even want the damn phone, I prefer a landline.

Walmart has some $30/ month plan with 1,000 minutes but the phone is not included....that may work too ! I could could get one of those dope dealer disposable phones.....what do you call them.... drophones or something ?

I won't be doing anything illegal with it, but I hate the idea of a cellphone.....I wish payphones still existed in places other than hotel lobbies.

LOL. Never understood why (even if you truly believe big brother is "tracking" you) that anyone would be worried about it unless they were doing a bunch of shady shit. I don't give two shits if big brother is looking over my shoulder because I have nothing to hide.

Stay away from Boost. It's nearly impossible to get ahold of them so basically NO customer service.
Not to mention they're service sucks.

AT&T vs Verizon debate is endless. But I'd go with one of those companies.

Sign up for AAA road service, it's like $80 a year. It entitles you to all sorts of road side service AND many discounts that people are unaware of. 10% off monthly bill @ AT&T is one of the many.

Your cell phone savings each month pays off more than the membership costs.

Just something to consider.
