The DOJ released a statement on Friday, that they actually made last August, that says the Wire Act only applies to sportsbetting.

Or so the papers and gambling sites are saying this morning. Looks like a huge christmas gift to poker players . According to most interpretations the states may begin to license operators as soon as possible. With Nev, Cali, and other blue states already having plans in the works this may very well be what we've been waiting for.The big political payoff that Dems can claim to have "fought for"....

I for 1 will wait to hear a clarification from the FED, as the statement doesnt say that they are unbanning anything specific.. In fact it says "
the department's Office of Legal Counsel said it determined that the Federal Wire Act—the 1961 law that had been interpreted to outlaw all forms of gambling across state lines—applies only to "a sporting event or contest."
So until i hear what Holder defines as a contest.....and believe me anyone who guesses what this imbecile means when he says something is as dumb as he is...im not preparing to move to another state anytime soon. Ill have to move as our part-time Govenor will never in a million years agree to legalization here in Louisiana and being a red state i doubt the statement will apply to us anyway.

Be very interesting to see how it all plays out but i wouldnt start jumping up and down just yet like all the poker sites and gambling boards are doing this morning.... For 1 i find it hard to believe this admins believes in states rights for anything and that last part about "or contest" is wide open to interpretation....rxb@ll

From what I can remember when it was first inacted, the wire act was to prevent bets on horses. Sports betting wasn't very big in the 60's, especially the early 60's.

Betting on horses was much bigger than any sports betting at that time. That was what the wire act was intended to prevent.
