Fish and I were roommates in a Frat. Thanks to Art Schlichter beating Michigan and Iowa beating Mich State. We were at Kinnick someone had a Tv so we knew we were going to Rose Bowl.
Insanity followed. I was dragged out of Kinnick and thrown in jail for public intox. I remember Fish later came stumbling in about 2am in the Frat. He was almost blue. He was sleeping in car, drunk, and it was about 20 and brutal cold.
When Iowa won the rights to play in Rose Bowl, we bought tickets on a Charter Bus Trip.
Trip was $220 each and included a stop in Vegas, hotel in Santa Monica, New Eve Party, Rose Bowl Parade, etc.. Little did we know the impact of that trip. There were four buses leaving Iowa City, a few days after Xmas. .
I remember before we got on the bus in Iowa City, he got showed me the bankroll he was going to bet on them. I think it was at least a dime. I had no idea what a spread was.
We stayed at the Frontier, included were tickets to Sigfried and Roy, which we almost didn't go to.
We stayed across street from the Desert Inn. That was so cool, since "Vegas" with Dan Tanna etc was filmed there. I remember going up the three story glass elevator and being in awe. We were real square hicks from Iowa.
Before we left to board the bus for L.A. Fish had to sprint down to the Stardust to get down on the game. I lost a fortune for me as a broke student $100 and Fish lost ? big time. Of course it was the squarest of bet's. A Big Ten team favored at the Rose Bowl.
Final Washington 28-0. Jacques Robinson had a career day and went on to father Nate.
The worst part was having to get on the bus leaving the Rose Bowl to return to Iowa City. 48 hours on the bus, thru snow storms. Fish bought a warm case of Bud and drank the whole thing on the trip back.
When we got back, all we could see was the antenna of Fish's "Rockfords Files" Camaro.
