Looking to buy some as a birthday present for my 11 yr old nephew. So many different ones to choose. Need advice on the best new cards on the market.

First off, how much are you looking to spend? I usually buy hobby boxes which can be anywhere from $40 for a low end box all the way up to around $400 to $500 for a really high end box. If you're looking to buy something which has a few "hits" (autograph or relic cards) at the lower end then I would go with maybe some of the Panini products such as Threads or Rookies & Stars for football and maybe some of the Topps products for baseball like Lineage, Allen & Ginter (this has different cards as well as baseball in it), maybe Bowman Chrome or Bowman Draft Picks. In baseball it really all depends if you want to pull mainly rookies and prospects (Bowman Chrome for that) or star players. I like to buy some boxes for myself and my nephew and we open them together always looking for that big card. We opened up a box of 2008 Upper Deck SPX baseball a couple of years ago and pulled a Derek Jeter Jersey Auto #'d to 20 and he was so happy as well as I.

I buy a lot of my cards at a local show here in Michigan but I also buy from Blowout Cards online. They usually have the cheapest prices. If you have any other questions just let me know.

To further comment on tenman above, are you looking for purchase packs, or single cards with some decent value of rookies or his favorite players?

That is a good point. You can also purchase packs right from the hobby boxes at your local card shop if you have one in your area. I forgot to mention that your local Wal Mart and Target has some retail boxes (they are also called blaster boxes) that are price from $10.99 and up where you can actually pull some high value cards such as some decent autographs and relic cards. Not all blaster boxes have these in them so you take your chances but most hobby boxes you open you are taking that chance as well so I always say "what the heck." The blaster boxes that everyone right now seems to be buying and opening are the 2011 Topps Value Box. People seem to be getting some really great cards out of these. There is a forum on Blowout Cards where they have a lot of Baseball Box Breaks and you can see some of the stuff these collectors open and the cards they are pulling. Some real nice cards. I myself like to buy boxes and hope to pull something for my "PC" (personal collection) and if not then I sell them. I have made some pretty good money selling cards and I have quite a few high value cards in my PC. Here is a video I made last March of my so called "Mancave" where most of my cards are displayed:

Tenman there's a Cam Newton Rookie Patch included face up in the retail Topps Complete Sets.
There's also a Newton regular Topps Chrome Rookie included in retail value packs.
Are they listed at all and do they make them worth the purchase?

Thanks

Everything is listed. Usually the rookie patches are from the Rookie Photo Shoots or just made up (if its the NFL Shield) and not from a game-used jersey. Those sell for about $10-30 on eBay. As a gift for a kid, it would be pretty cool as long as he collects and doesn't think he will get super rich.
