so im trying to hang a rod and drapes that will cover a doorway out to a back porch. the drapes will cover around 100 inches of windows and door. Im having a really hard time using the screws provided with the drapes. I get them in about half way and they wont budge. I imagine i am hitting some type of beam inside the wall. what type of screws should i pick up from home depot to finish the job? other rooms were no problem, but this specific spot just going nowhere

Since it is an eight foot exterior opening there is a possibility that they used as steel header. If that is the case try drilling the holes an inch or two higher.

The screws you have are probably meant for wood. There is also the possibility that you are hitting metal studs in which case you can use a self tapping screw.

You want the screws to sink either in wood or metal. If they are just in the plaster they will not hold up the drapes.

Hope this helps.

Pilot holes are mainly to keep the wood from cracking.

What kind of screws came with the kit?
And are you using a screw gun?

i tried an electric screw driver first and now a drill. both times the screw gets about halfway into the wall and stops moving

You should drill pilot holes. Find a drill bit lightly smaller than the screw head.

You can also dip the screws in some dish soap for lube. Works great.

Find a small drill bit for metal (1/4 inch or so) and use it to pre-drill your holes. Find a couple of self-tapping screws 2 inches or so long and they should go right in.

could the wall behind this be concrete, brick or some such material ?

that would explain the dead stop halfway through.

Not very good advice here bossman..

A 1/4" drill bit is huge....Fkn huge in comparison to what you really want to use for this application....a drywall screw. Secondly you mentioned using self tapping screws which wouldn't require a drill bit to begin with.

Buddy sometimes things don't work out the way too.. you want and you need a few options..I would pick up a box of 2"drywall screws...Good to have around the house anyway...Pick up some sell tapping(bit tip) drywall screws as well...

If when you are driving the bit tips, they don't push through, take out the screw and examine the tip..Does it look like mortar or cement on the tip?
Or is the screw just dull?

If the screw is dull throw it away...Then try another...And then maybe another. Sometimes it will take you four screws...If the metal framing is heavy duty I would suggest this method before using small...and by small I mean 1/8th in drill bits because you are destined to just break the bit. So just keep driving home bit tips until you bust through the metal.

If you encounter mortar debris on the end of your bit tip screw then you need to use tapcons or plastic anchors...You know drill hole...tap plastic anchor into place then drive screw into anchor.
