I am going to a few tomorrow. I researched it because I watch storage hunters and storage wars and thought it was interesting. Anyone have any experience? Seems like it could be a good money maker.

I play poker with a guy that runs them....

He says its very hard here to make a profit.. he says since the show, prices have TRIPLED and QUADRUPLED...

one of my facebook friends does it, and it retarded him having every status.. "need a blender"... i actually was gonna get a sewing machine from him for my mom, and he wanted a stupid amount for it. Went to goodwill got a nicer one for 1.3rd of the price...

I say go enjoy the experience, but unless you are very knowledge probably won't make much is any money... prices are just too high right now because of the show

It all depends on what is in the storage unit that makes it interesting. All you need is to get lucky one time and get some valuable coins or jewelry.

The lady I talked to from the auction site that is running it said you can make some money but you have to be a "gambler"....

Yep. My friends are storage center managers. They say that every once in awhile there is a good haul but most of them are just household possessions like clothes, furniture, dishes, etc. When someone knows they can't pay their storage rent they usually take the valuables out and have them pawned.

yea never really understood why anyone would leave valuables in storage and let it go into default unless they like died and nobody knew about it/claimed it. even if ur broke you would think you could get a friend to pay your late fees and what not for stuff out of the unit. people have $4-5k in rare coins in storage, but cant find a way to pay $300-400 in storage fees etc

Here's the truth dude. I've been to more auctions than you can imagine - storage auctions, coin auctions, antique auctions, surplus govt merchandise auctions, customs auctions, repossessed car auctions, bankruptcy auctions, etc. YOU'VE GOT TO KNOW WHAT YOU'RE BUYING AND WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO SELL IT BEFORE YOU BID OR YOU'RE GOING TO LOSE YOUR ASS.

Almost every auction you attend, there will be some amateurs (aka suckers) with wads of cash and dreams of making big $$ and they will overbid things way beyond the point where it makes sense. Auctions are a great way to SELL stuff, not a great way to BUY stuff. I remember going to a gov't auction once and there was a nice Mercedes (supposedly seized by DEA). The car sold for over retail blue book. I've seen that happen many many times.

I've only been to a few storage auctions, and remember the units were basically total junk. Why would anyone lose a storage unit with $5K or $10K worth of stuff in it for a lousy few months rent? The units that do go to auction are full of crap; they've removed the valuables. Those TV shows are pure fantasy.

I think you have to know the area and think about what that brings to the storage locker...ie a storage locker in Beverly hills would yield a lot more than one in Detroit ...lol

100 % true ! A close neighbor used to do this for years and it was very profitable until the phony TV shows took to the air. Now the prices have gone through the roof and grooves of people show up and over bid. Of course every once in a while you might find a gem but over the long haul now, it's not a $$ maker anymore. He doesn't do it anymore but said someday the fad will die and perhaps return to the good old days.

Know a guy at work that's been doing this for a few months now. He bought a unit last week and found a bag of weed in the mix. I guess things can get a little heated at these things. He also mentioned he believes some of these people who run these units go through the stuff before it's auctioned and grab what's most valuable.

These units do seem like a good place to dump old computer monitors/equipment, tube TVs, furniture, cans of paint and other stuff that would cost money to dispose of. I should put an ad in the paper asking for someone close to defaulting on a locker to rent some space to me.

That's what I had a question about....How about if you found a key of coke or something? Do they look over the stuff with you to make sure that there isn't nothing illegal or is it as soon as you buy it you can put a lock on it and it's yours.

I agree about how the show made the prices flare up, hell I wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't for the shows.

Storage wars certainly must have increased the numbers of amateurs trying it. I doubt there is much left to this. You clearly need to sell the stuff you don't wind up paying to dispose of....therefore some connections with expertise in all sorts of stuff are needed, plus a way to sell stuff like average furniture, appliances, household items, etc.

Some sort of storefront like Jethro and Brandi have is needed, IMO
