The White House is standing by the Transportation Security Administration in its standoff with Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and his father, Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas).

The elder Paul called the TSA a "police state" Monday after Rand Paul was reportedly detained by TSA after he refused to take a pat-down from TSA officials at the Nashville International Airport.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday that he didn't have any reaction to Paul's "police state" comments.

But Carney sided with the TSA saying, "I think it is absolutely essential that we take necessary actions to ensure that air travel is safe."

Really?

The U.S. Constitution actually protects federal lawmakers from detention while they’re on the way to the capital.

“The Senators and Representatives…shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same….” according to Article I, Section 6.

He triggered the metal detector as he was going through. What makes him think he's exempt to a pat down? If us commoners have to do it, than jackweeds like him have to as well.

sorry DEAC but if what has been reported is correct, the TSA again prove themselves to be mindless thug punks

report is that Rand asked to be sent through the big, bad body scanner to show the alarm was an anomaly but these minimum wage fuckwits needed to show how important they really are. As such, they detained him and he missed his flight...congrats TSA. Job well done!

The fact is, apparently, that after a long detain he went through the screening process again with no alarm and caught the next flight. So much for TSA doing it's job...errr, whatever it is that they believe their job to be other than to be another animal looking for the taxpayer's teet

Their jobs is to keep you and me safe ya know.

Can't stop illegal immigrants sneak in the border everyday yet they can harass everyone who travels by planes.

to good to be treated like the rest of us under the laws that he helped pass. What would you call him?

of course wouldn't expect you to know this but RP has only been a Senator for 1 year so certainly did not help pass this TSA idiocy

I do know that RT. Can you cite any attempts on his part to modify the law? Can you tell why he feels exempt from it?

i didn't say he was an active anti-TSA protestor I said he was not part of the "laws that he helped pass" as related to airport security. Of course I know he believes it furthers a police-state mentality but it's impossible that he helped pass TSA power as we see it today

as far as being exempt...yes there are laws on the books that exempt senators from arrest but not detainment....but wasn't absolving Rand's behavior based on a law either.

this is not a simple "dude got beeped going through metal detector and refused pat down" as the first reports attempted to create

it's fn time that a public figure besides a few radio show hosts stood up to these punks

Remember why we have the TSA? Because 19 terrorists made it all the way through airport security on September 11th. Sound familiar? The very same people complaining about TSA would also be the ones shouting the loudest if security was still lax and we got attacked again via a similar method.

Illegal immigrants are sneaking in from the border everyday, who know if some of them maybe terrorists.

When the terrorists want to get in the US, of course they would look for place that has the least security to do that.

Liberal brainwashed sheep simply don't get it.
