Prince Fielder signs with the Tigers

Chalk up one more for the so-called mystery team. First it was Cliff Lee going to the Phillies, then Albert Pujols heading to the Angels. Now Prince Fielder has shocked the baseball world by signing with the Detroit Tigers, a team that hadn't even been remotely connected to him in rumors the entire offseason. The robust first baseman has signed a nine-year contract worth $214 million, CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman has learned.

Heyman also notes that the finalists to land Fielder were the Nationals, Tigers and one other "mystery team."

The Tigers were recently dealt what appeared to be a pretty severe blow, as Victor Martinez tore his ACL and could miss the entire 2012 season. So there went Miguel Cabrera's lineup protection, right? Think again. Owner Mike Ilitch really wants to win a World Series championship and this signing indicates one of the strongest reactions one can even imagine to news like that.

A Fielder-Cabrera combo in the middle of that order will dominate AL Central pitching. Throw Justin Verlander into the mix, and the Tigers have three of baseball's biggest stars.

Fielder, 27, hit .299/.415/.566 with 38 homers, 120 RBI, 95 runs and 36 doubles last season for the NL Central champion Brewers. He finished third in MVP voting and also took home the All-Star Game MVP. Though Fielder is a large man, he is as durable as they come. He hasn't played in less than 157 games in a season since becoming a regular. He played in all 162 last season, following up seasons where he appeared in 161 and 162 games, respectively.

The smart money with Fielder and Cabrera is a split at first base, with the other serving as the designated hitter. Then again, what if the Tigers got nuts and tried to shove Cabrera back across the diamond to play third base again -- where he began his career? That would mean the infield defense would be awful, but would also leave room for a better hitting DH than Brandon Inge (who, at this point, looks like the third baseman). And if Victor Martinez comes back healthy? It works even better.

For now, though, the only details that really matter are that Prince Fielder is heading to Detroit -- where his father once held down the middle of the order -- and he's going to make a whole lot of money.

Can't imagine how many homeruns he will hit against all the shitty AL Central pitchers. Tigers were the favorite in the AL Central already, now they should run away with it. Nice signing after losing Victor Martinez.

Id have loved to have seen Fielder wear out right field at the ballpark in arlington, but for that kind of money id rather the tigers sweat out his future. Surely the tigers have some kind of opt out clause in that contract

As a Brewer fan, it is just nice to see he didn't sign with an NL team. It's too bad being the smallest TV market in baseball costs Milwaukee a player who it drafted and developed. Life goes on.

This is a Mike Illich deal the whole way. Hell Leyland learned of the deal from the media. It was kept very quiet.

Illich does not care about the future. He wants to win a ring in the next few years. he is getting old and would love to win the world series.

His first love is basdball, he played in the Tigers farm system way back when. He has the taste of victory with the Wings but what he realy wants is a world series.

They must be smoking crack in that Detroit clubhouse.
$214 million....... Yikes!

On a positive note for Prince, hostess has declared bankruptcy which should help him shed a few pounds

Hostess has been in bankruptcy for ever it seems like. LOL

Like I said above Illich only cares for the next 3 years or so. Thats the only wy to get him here. Illich will pull some of the Wings money to help pay for this.

Think of it this way, Hockey has a cap now the last few years. So his cost of business has gone way done and his profits have gone way way up. He has not passed on his savings to the fans. He owns the parking, beer, food money also.

Can you imagine how much bigger he will get in the next 5 years. They will have to roll him down the basepath. I hope they have a opt out

They are crazy if they don't have an opt out, surely they do. 9 years $214? Thats some serious money for a team that already has the best 1bmen in the league. I think they are crazy if they put cabrera at 3rd base and prince at first. I mean would you take one of the best 1st basemen in the world and let him be an above average 3rd basemen??? That's what they are gonna have to do if they make a world series. Damn, I wish the rangers would have got him (not for anywhere near the money or years tigers paid though), he was the perfect fit for our ballpark.....I don't think prince will have quite the type of years he was having in Milwaukee either, Detroit's field isn't exactly hitter friendly although it isn't as pitcher friendly asit used to be

For 214M, he should hire a couple of personal trainers and lose some of that baby fat....Panda in SF did and it worked wonders...
