LEXINGTON, Ky. – Rachel Alexandra and her first foal, a 125-pound Curlin colt born Jan. 22, were “doing well” one day after the birth, Stonestreet Farms said Monday morning on its website.
“For the next week, the focus will be on allowing Rachel and her foal to adjust to one another,” an update on the site, www.stonestreetfarms.com, said. “We thank everyone for their warm thoughts and amazing response to this special event.”
Rachel Alexandra produced the Curlin colt at Stonestreet Farms in Lexington on Sunday. The bay colt with a star was born at about 2:40 p.m., a little more than a week ahead of her Feb. 1 due date. The colt is the son of two Horses of the Year – Curlin was Horse of the Year in 2007 and 2008, and Rachel Alexandra earned the honor in 2009. Both sire and dam also won runnings of the Preakness Stakes. In 2009, Rachel Alexandra became the first filly to win the Preakness since Nellie Morse did it in 1924. Curlin won the Preakness in 2007.
Stonestreet, founded by the late Jess Jackson and now operated by his widow Barbara Banke, owns both Rachel Alexandra and Curlin. The stallion, a son of Smart Strike, stands at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Ky., where has a $40,000 fee in 2012. Lane’s End also is home to another female Horse of the Year who is due to produce her first foal this year – 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, currently in foal to Darley Stud stallion Bernardini, is expected to foal in March.
Plans call for Rachel Alexandra, a 6-year-old Medaglia d’Oro mare, to be bred back to Bernardini this year.
Stonestreet manager Gary Megibben said Sunday after the foaling that “Rachel is a natural mother and took to the colt immediately.”
Banke said Sunday that she was “thrilled with the good news of Rachel’s safe delivery and health of the handsome colt that resembles her. For me and my children, this colt represents Jess’s dream – to raise and race the best. Co-owner Hal McCormick and I look forward to watching him develop and are excited to see him carry the Stonestreet silks as his mom and dad did before him.”
