my father has had it for years and its a bitch. Diet controls it for sure. Better give up the beer and starches like potatoes for now. Probably some anti-inflammatories for now until you can see your DR again.

A few of my in-laws do severely, but they prefer to walk with a limp instead of stop drinking or eating steak.

Have you changed your diet?

I get a flare up in my big toe about once every 12-18 months. It's freakin' terrible.

The reason for the flare up is a buildup of uric acid in your joints. Fish oil is supposed to help but I usually just let the flare go away, takes a week or so.

I suffer terribly from it b/c i wont stay on my diet , as harry caray said it's caused by uric acid.

The biggest food offender is red meat , also alchohol and foods that are rich.

If i have pancakes for breakfast and cheeseburgers for lunch i'll wake up the next day with an attack.

Baked fish or chicken with raw vegetables is the reccomended diet. ... and WATER , WATER , WATER !

I got it about 4 years ago and it is the most painful thing that is imaginable. I had another flare-up and 6 months later, and a few times after that.

Been drinking cherry juice the last year or so and never had a flare-up since.

Anybody that has had gout will attest to as being very very painful.

Yeah VERY painful. I drastically changed my alcohol habits and haven't had a flare in about 3 years now. Those flare-ups are terrible though, I remember having to get my foot into a dress shoe in the morning was absolute murder. Then a ~1 mile walk from my car to the office (worked in a huge Cat plant). Horrible, I actually called in sick a few times cause of it.

If you have cronic gout and it frequently flares up, I recommend going to the doctor and getting a prescription for a drug that lowers your uric acid count. Probenecid is what I use. Plus plenty of water. I had it very bad in my hands and fingers. Before I started taking it, I could barely type a word on my computer because it hurt so bad. This drug helped me tremendously. Plus a slight change of diet. The only side effect of probenecid is if you don't drink plenty of water you can get kidney stones. But that's not a problem for me. I drink a jug of water or more a day.

Are you still taking the Probenecid? Any issues/side effects? I hadn't heard of this one, I've been trying to avoid Allopurinol as I've heard some bad stories about it. I've had gout for years, currently enduring a severe flareup the likes of which I haven't had for quite awhile. But I've been having mild flare-ups way more frequently lately so considering taking a uric acid lowering drug for it.
