Report: Josh Hamilton had relapse; Rangers “aware of a situation”
By Cindy Boren

Josh Hamilton reportedly had a relapse Monday night in Dallas. (Tony Gutierrez / AP) Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton reportedly had a relapse in his struggle with addiction earlier this week in Dallas.

The Rangers said in a statement to the Dallas Morning News, which reported the relapse, that they are “aware of a situation, but we don’t have further comment at this time.”

Sources familiar with the episode told the Morning News that Hamilton drank alcohol Monday night at Sherlock's Pub & Grill. A Rangers teammate, Ian Kinsler, came to the bar to try to attempt to convince him to go home.

While playing in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, Hamilton, the 2010 American League MVP, was suspended for more than three years for drug and alcohol use, missing the entire 2004 and 2005 seasons. A roughly 3 1/2-year period of sobriety ended in January 2009 when he drank to excess in a Tempe, Ariz., bar. Shortly after that incident, Hamilton notified the Rangers and Major League Baseball of his relapse, passed a drug test and enrolled in a counseling program, at the insistence of MLB.

“I got away from the one thing that kept me on the straight and narrow, and that was my relationship with the Lord,” Hamilton said in 2009. “That should always come first. Hopefully some good will come out of this. It just crossed my mind that night, 'Can I have a drink?' Obviously I can't and this reinforces that. Since that night, I have not had another thought like that. I know it's something I shouldn't do because it leads to other things.”

The Rangers, who did not punish him for that slip, nonetheless have a “zero tolerance” policy toward Hamilton, who is tested three times a week for drug use. In addition, he has had an accountability partner, although that job presently is vacant. Hitting coach Johnny Narron was Hamilton’s support until he left for Milwaukee; Hamilton’s father-in-law was hired as a special assistant to help Hamilton, but he changed his mind, citing “family considerations.”

Hamilton’s teammates have been supportive, switching from champagne to ginger ale to celebrate division and American League titles. There was, however, concern for Hamilton last summer after an incident in which a fan was killed in a fall from the stands as he reached for a ball Hamilton had tossed toward spectators. Firefighter Shannon Stone died July 7, as his young son watched.

Yeah, unless he continues to hit over .300 with 30 plus home runs.

Hate to see it happen. Of course I am a huge Rangers fan so I may be partial to Josh, but I honestly feel like he is a good guy. You can tell that he has truly TRIED to beat his addiction. I just hate that people will now blast him for his views on Christianity and what not because he went to the bar one night. I hope he can stay sober and if it takes 1 night every 2-3 years to but him back on the right track then so be it. Just hope those one nights don't lead him back to his addiction.

Guy seems like he has a good heart and I would hate to see him give it all away again.

Its funny I don't remember this show of support for Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden or Michael Irvin when they were battling and relapsing from their addiction. I remember people calling them junkies and selfish individuals. Remember when Tommy Lasorda went off to the media and ripped in about Darryl when he relapsed? I guess the public has more sympathy and acceptance when white ball players have drug or alcohol problems.

yep same deal as when a fight in nba occurs people go off about a bunch of thugs fighting... in baseball a head hunting pitcher, followed by a brawl is just part of the game

Sherlock's a dive bar in Addison. WTF was he doing there?

I think it was the one in Dallas off 75/Park. Either way-terrible choice. We were talking at work today about how he should have at least been somewhere decent getting exposed.
He never said he wouldn't do it again either, and he made it sound like he drinks less infrequently than made to believe. The guy goes to my church-but I've never seen or heard of him being there (though large) in 6+ years.

I hate to say it, but from what I heard today there is a bunch of this story that hasn't been made public yet. I feel pretty confident Kinsler was having a few drinks with him, I mean who goes to meet a male friend at a restaurant, stays till the place closes and then goes to another place across the street to "talk"? I do believe Kinsler thought Hamilton was staying in the rest of the night when he left josh.

I agree with whoever said if he only slips up every couple of years and immediately jumps back on the wagon then its not the worst thing in the world.....I guess josh can throw out his hopes of ever getting a 6 year contract cause that ain't happening.....go rangers

Cherry pick much?

LT got entirely more love than he should have gotten.
Donte Stallworth got way to much sympathy. All he did was got drunk, killed a person, walked away after serving 30 days.

Doc Gooden deserved the shit he got, violation of parole, fleeing..................

Exactly in football and basketball where the sport is majority black you get fined, penalized and talked shit on in the media and on message boards if you showboat/celebrate, play on the edge of dirty, argue or fight. But in baseball and hockey of which both sports are white dominated and you wield weapons in the form of bladed skates, sticks, bats and balls thrown with violent force and they allow player on player fighting and brawls, arguing and disrespectful behavior towards the officials.

Funny how when a fight takes place in the NBA if you leave the bench in support of your teammates or to break shit up it is an automatic ejection but in baseball you got motherfuckers running out from the dugout and the bullpen looking to get in the fray and that is acceptable.
