When I worked at CRIS, we used two handicappers that we called before putting up overnights for major sports...our head linesman then used that info along with his input and put up opening lines...the owner of CRIS trusted our judgement in putting up any opener that we wanted...I'm guessing Pinny and Olympic did the same....we opened for half limits before opening them up for full limits the following day....any head linesman worth his salt could put up good numbers....a lot of smaller books would just copy our openers....
Out halftime numbers would be put up from whoever was in charge during the day or night... hope this answers some questions that may arise...
Kenny White from Las Vegas had an office which spit out openers and numbers...but I don't know who used them or how the info was given out...
Thanks! That's awesome info.
Essentially a few of you guys get together and throw out numbers that every other book in the world follows to some degree. That's a crazy amount of power.
How often were you guys questioned on a particular line from another book?
I still find it hard to believe that other shops that put together openers could consistently be close to your numbers.
When you set your openers were you concerned with how that was going to affect your shop getting hit, or did you guys consider the ramifications across other books since most were copying?
Seems like a lot of questions, but I've always been astounded how there haven't been more services providing preliminary openers that differ somewhat significantly from CRIS, etc--before final opening number comes out. And then the numbers would come out at an matched price-much like a market. I guess Matchbook mimics this idea somewhat.
