1997 Honda Civic for 3500 or 2002 Suzuki XL7 for the same 3500.

Both cars are being sold by co-workers of hers.

The Honda the co-workers husband works on cars and flipping them as is his hobby.

I just got off the phone with her and told her to take to a mechanic of course and hoping some one here will chime in........thank you in advance.

Stay away from the Suzuki and go for the Honda. The old Civic's are bullet proof. I owned a 2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara and it was junk.

I agree with harry and the hendersons...

I have a 1998 honda civic... bought it 3 yrs ago... never ONE problem and my kids ran that thing like crazy..I paid 2700.. worth every penny... does not even leak at all ..has 120K and runs like new

I have to say go with the Honda. I drove one into the ground and it lasted to 245,000 miles without much work at all.

$3500 for a 1997 Civic is absurd! That car depending on mileage and condition is worth about $1,800-$2,200.

I bought a brand new Honda Accord as a 2000 model year ( wife's car, I always have an older F-150....but it doesn't have to be a Ford truck), brought it up to 250,000 miles....tranny started to slip, sold it to Carmax for 2K. I can't complain about 250,000 miles out of a car with minimal maintenance being done.

Bought a new 2007 Honda CR-V, in late 2006 ( around Halloween), has about 140,000 on it now. I figure this car for 300,000 miles.

Fucking stupid-ass wife wants to trade it in anytime a light bulb needs replacement, well Bitch I bought my truck with 105,000 miles on it, years ago....don't need a new one, just normal repairs like brakes, tires, battery, etc.

I hate new cars !

I don't claim to know it all, i spent over 40 yrs in the auto business, i retired in 2007 to take care of my wife due to her health issues.I still work part time as a buyer & consultant for a small pre-owned dealer. Between the 2 vehicles the civic is the better vehicle, make sure the timing belt & water pump has been changed as that is preventive maintenance, i would not pay over $2500 even with the maintenance completed that i mentioned. I also drive a 2011 honda accord, in my opinion the honda is the best vehicle out there dollar for dollar, but everyone has an opinion. Back in the day i spent around 10 years as a Honda Sales Mgr, so you can understand my opinion,ha ha.GL hope this post is of some help to you.By the way you never mentioned how many miles on the civic?

Sparty, seems we have more similarities than just age. I too was in the car business for many yrs, in F&I. What's the mileage on the 2 cars. Honda is a great car but 35 is a tad hi depending on the rounds. Honda/Toyota can't go wrong. Last forever w/little maintenance.

best car ever made is a Toyota Corolla....Cant not put her in a better car than say a 92- 97 model.

Please dont make the mistake of buying the suzuki....just google the thing, 1 of the worst rated cars there are. Recent models get better reviews but still nowhere near the standard of Toyota and Honda..

Yeah I bought her an 87 Camary six years ago and the timing chain went out on her and is why she needs new car.

Toyota's are great cars.

But this thread has become moot as her rich uncle(my brother) called last night and is giving her his 2002 Mitsubishi.

She balled like a baby.

That's what family is all about........

And yeah I was not going to let her pay 3500 for the Honda after going to auto trader and so forth,but they do have good resale value.

I don't even remember how many 1977 or so Corolla beaters I bought for $200-$300 in the mid to late 80's. I'd get like a year out of them maybe 10,000 miles sometimes even sell it at a profit a year later with nothing more than an oil change or two done....and they got like 35 mpg.

Now a beater car like that is $2,000 +....like a 10 year old Nissan, Toyota,Honda, etc.

Cars really haven't gotten much better ( MPG wise) than with 35 year old ago technology.

You can certainly find a nice used Honda/ Toyota with service records if you have the time to look at places like Craigslist. I would not fear buying one with 150,000 + miles on it....if the seller has service records and the price is right. They can easily go 250,000 miles, even 400,000 is within reason.

those 100,000 + miles you can get out of a quality used car with 100k + on it already are the best bargain you'll ever get on a car. 5k will get you a very nice used car, instead of 15k for a new piece of crap.

$3,500 for a '97 model seems pretty high to me as well. I'm assuming that it has high mileage, which is really nothing with these cars, but do you live in a state with snow/ice/salt, etc? If so, I'd check the body extensively. Those tend to go to hell before the mechanical stuff, at least up here.

The thing about Hondas is they get a big time premium on the resale end of things. A lot of this is earned due to their reliability, but you are paying a premium for the nameplate. For example, you could probably get a similar Ford Focus for ~60-70% of the price (based on milage/model). From my experience, they are very reliable cars (post 2002).

FWIW,RELIABILITY YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD,what more is there to pay for with purchasing an older car like the 97 civic he mentioned. There is NO comparision between a Ford Focus & a Honda Civic, that is the reason for the price difference, because of what you said about the reliability,gl.

As I recall, Honda wasn't so big circa 1977. That was more Toyota territory.

Subaru makes a really good car too, I almost bought one instead of the current CR-V.

I still like Honda cars and Ford trucks for value.

Any new car these days should run for 200k miles, but I'd rather have a Honda Fit over a Suzuki whatever you call it.

There is no reason for a gasoline powered car to not last for 300,000 miles with great maintence. a diesel mercedes or such could go a million miles
