Not a good comparison.
The closer comparison would be shorting stocks in your own company.
One would also have to consider the possibility of being found out (family members, particularly low-income ones with that kind of dirt could easily turn sour), being banned for life and having to sweep floors for a living instead of making millions. All thing considered, I'd say it's -EV.

Most of them don't really care about the money enough to do that. They wanted a ring, not the extra 83k
Any athlete with an endorsement would be risking more by trying to have a family member wager for them. A lesser known athlete could risk blacklisting himself if he got caught. With social networking/media you are risking embarrassment and future earnings.
So, no it isn't illegal if you do it right....but only a degen would think it is a good idea.
You are essentially saying that:
Athletes can't give a family member a large sum of cash and that it is illegal for any athlete's family member to place a bet on said sporting event. Nope
Must be why I think it's a good idea!
You really don't think that throughout the years there hasn't been any family members (of endorsed players) to ever bet on the SB? And against their family member at that (not that that aspect even matters).
