If you would have won = $83K
Since you lost = $42K

Should of had a family member get down on NYG ml +125 for $18,222.
Sure profit of $64,778.

Someone had to have done it.

Not a good comparison.
The closer comparison would be shorting stocks in your own company.

Nope. I assumed you had options or stock that had already appreciated.
Go short, and your stock goes up, and you could lose all profit.

Either way, athletes should try this out. I guess it is a little more complicated as you would need to consider taxes as well.

One would also have to consider the possibility of being found out (family members, particularly low-income ones with that kind of dirt could easily turn sour), being banned for life and having to sweep floors for a living instead of making millions. All thing considered, I'd say it's -EV.

You are essentially saying that:
Athletes can't give a family member a large sum of cash and that it is illegal for any athlete's family member to place a bet on said sporting event. Nope

Any athlete with an endorsement would be risking more by trying to have a family member wager for them. A lesser known athlete could risk blacklisting himself if he got caught. With social networking/media you are risking embarrassment and future earnings.
So, no it isn't illegal if you do it right....but only a degen would think it is a good idea.

Most of them don't really care about the money enough to do that. They wanted a ring, not the extra 83k

You crazy. I obviously wasn't referring to the likes of Tom Brady...

Tiquan Underwood, etc...definately only worried about a ring.
Not worried one bit that he got cut and now doesn't have a job.

Must be why I think it's a good idea!
You really don't think that throughout the years there hasn't been any family members (of endorsed players) to ever bet on the SB? And against their family member at that (not that that aspect even matters).

I'm not talking about the law, I'm talking about NFL rules. If a player was determined to have given anyone some cash for the purpose of betting against that player's team and for doing so on behalf of that player, I'm almost certain that the commissioner has the power to ban him for life.

I'm sure it has and does happen but, as DH posted, you could be risking your football life.

Also, Uncle Bucky may end up using it against you when he can't pay his rent.
