I plan on taking it up. I was wondering if there are any players on this site and if they could give some good starter info. Also, I believe that gambling on backgammon is common, would love to hear some stories related to that, yours or otherwise. Cheers!

I love the game, very similiar to poker in regards to "pot odds".

I learned from an Egyptian in Argentina and now continue playing mostly on games.yahoo.com I highly recommend you getting your feet wet on yahoo, you can learn a lot in a short amount of time. Also, read about opening moves, very good way to improve your game in beginning stages.

Backgammon, one of my all time favorite games... for cards is Spades. Gambling involves using the doubling die and action on backgammon completely changes how you play. Also, dont be fooled initially. Stakes can quickly get out of hand if you dont know what your doing when using a doubling die. I remember being very very good at it straight up when I was younger and would play with my roommate, he was much wiser than me at the time. We decided to wager on games for fun, it was his idea. I got my ass completely and repeatedly kicked very badly for an extended period of time. Think I ended coughing up a few hundred bucks... and remember this was supposed to be tiny stakes, like a nickel or ten cents a point or something. Spades, the best game and so gangster. I was also very good at it and my house was the house where everybody hung out everyday drinking beer and stuff when I was a teen and early twenties. I ended up getting a few weekends in the city detention center which consisted of sitting in a bullpen the whole time with 10 to 20 other non white prisoners and being really white. I was so white that the blacks would not let me play cards. Finally by day 2 they lost a 4th and couldnt get another player so they let me... I was now snowflake. Anyway, pulled a Boston on the first hand, thats all 13 rounds/tricks... very hard to do ever. I was instantly the shizzle, though my partner had to collect for us. My name also changed to Hollywood, they had let me keep my cheap black sunglasses. Overall, was a cool experience and not a deterent at all, at least not for me at the time.

Bangbang, don't care for spades, hearts is my game and in a similiar setting I was 'the oldman' and I RARELY lost. Again, thanks.

Nothing better than spades. But so much depends on what cards you get, bidding is important, but the majority of time the players with the best cards should win. Unless your using nils, but most non-whites as you call them don't play with nils.

I learned the game back in 1977 from a female bartender during the dico era...every disco had backgammon tables in California....my big break in actual learning the game came in 1988 when working with Steak TarTar in the Dominican Republic...Steak and I took lessons from a guy who was world ranked(he worked for Code-Tel in the DR) He would show us how to play the game and what the best moves were according to the number thrown on the dice...

I played a ton when I was working in the sportsbooks in Costa Rica and could beat most opponents rather easily...it is always to your advantage when opponents think you are lucky when rolling the dice...I still gamble with a few guys these days and do quite well...I have attended some backgammon tournaments with world class players and just observe...I also attend the backgammon club here in Thailand and play some really good players but for very small stakes...when I play serious, I play from anywhere from 20-100 a point with the cube...I will be in Costa Rica in three weeks to play some more....

My advice is to read as much as you can and play often and try to play live with players that are higher rated and observe...there are always different moves with the number thrown on the dice...your objective is to pick the correct one(especially with bad rolls)...

As in any game of sport and chance, there are always better players out there...be careful who you play for serious cash...

The other games I loved was dominos and Rummy 500. Awsome partyimg games, hearts aint to bad either but I still believe spades is superior. To each their own I guess.

That's strong! You play beavers, raccoons and all that stuff too? You can win/lose a fortune at those stakes. If you come this way I can get you in a very serious chouette if you want. I'm not in it, they play too strong for me. I won't bullshit you either, these guys play very well, one or two are allegedly some of the best in the world. I can't support that to be true or not, I don't play well enough to tell. I do know he's more than enough for me, LOL.

Fun game but as VD says be careful, they hustle this game just like they do pool, golf, and everything else. If you even suspect they might be better then you are, you can bet your ass they are. Seen a lot of "good" players get their absolute ass handed to them in these private games. They have armed security, that tells you how serious some people take backgammon. Good luck with your new hobby.

at 100 a point and the cube gets to 128, the game is worth 12,800 bucks...I have had a handfull of games get to 256 and have won my share....

just double the cube each time and you can figure out how much the game is worth...

I play beavers and racoons for small stakes...20 bucks and under....those are really fun and makes you think twice about offerring the cube...I don't gamble high with players I have just met or don't know...I play with Jeff Whitelaw for 50 a point and neither of us gets rich....he is a very good player; one that I know I cannot beat long term...
