Rare amateur video captures Challenger tragedy up close

13:37 21 February 2012

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

A rare amateur video of the Challenger shuttle disaster has surfaced in Hicksville, New York, over 25 years after the tragic event when seven astronauts lost their lives.
Captured by registered nurse Bob Karman, the chilling raw footage was filmed from Orlando airport, just 80 kilometres from the launch site, as he was returning from a family vacation at Disney World. His late wife and 3-year-old daughter Kim, who now works at New Scientist, are visible in the beginning of the clip. "After shooting the video, I had a sense that something went wrong but it wasn't until we were on the plane that the pilot confirmed the tragedy," he says.
Karman always remembered filming the event but it was only recently, while researching historic amateur videos, that he became aware of the video's rarity. Captured in an era that precedes mobile phones, when few people owned camcorders, it's one of few video recordings of the disaster by a member of the public. In 2010, an article in The Guardian documented the discovery of a similar video, claiming that it was the only one in existence.
According to NASA spokesperson Michael Curie, NASA does not have a collection of amateur videos of the disaster. "The Rogers Commission used all the NASA photography and videos in its investigation but we do not know if they used outside amateur videos," he says.
The clip was digitised last month from an old VHS tape. Karman believes he could be the only living person to have documented the tragedy on home video.

Only 2 events caused me more anguish, Nov 63 & 9/11! Funny thing I remember exactly where I was for all 3. For the Challenger I was in Vegas, for my annual 3 to 4 mos. stay. Had just stopped for breakfast.

There's a stretch of highway (393) by Concord, NH named for Christa McAuliffe. It goes West to East from 93 to 106 a few miles south of New Hampshire Motor Speedway (which is on 106). I'm not exactly sure what time of day the launch and explosion occurred, but I recall being aware of it while at lunch at a Chinese restaurant on Mass ave in Central Sq. in Cambridge, MA. It was a very somber lunch.

Tributes flooded in for the seven astronauts who lost their lives on the Challenger Space Shuttle Thursday as the United States commemorated the 30[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversary of the disaster.
The shuttle exploded just 73 seconds after launch from Kennedy Space Center, Fla. on Jan. 28, 1986, killing all crewmembers of mission STS-51L. The disaster claimed the lives of astronauts Francis “Dick” Scobee, Michael Smith, Christa McAuliffe, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka and Gregory Jarvis.

NASA is holding a day of remembrance to commemorate the crews of Challenger, Apollo 1 and Columbia.

“Every year at this time we take a moment to reflect as the NASA family on the very broad shoulders on which we stand: the shoulders of those men and women of NASA who gave their lives so that you and I could continue to reach for new heights for the benefit of all humankind,” wrote NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, in a statement on NASA’s website.
Astronauts on the International Space Station held a moment’s silence as part of NASA’s Day of Remembrance.
“Today marks the 30[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident so I would like to just take a moment of silence and recognize the sacrifice of all those crewmembers and how their legacy and lives on in our achievement in space,” said American astronaut Scott Kelly, who is spending a year on the International Space Station.

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield added his voice to those paying tribute to the Challenger crew. “Spaceflight is forever safer, more capable. I honour them,” he tweeted.

“I think, in many ways [the Challenger disaster] challenged us to renew our exploration efforts,” said astronaut Buzz Aldrin, during an interview with Fox Business on Thursday.
Families of the lost astronauts are gathering with NASA to mark the space shuttle accident's anniversary Thursday.
Teachers and school board members are also gathering at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord, N.H. to pay tribute to crewmember and teacher Christa McAuliffe and the six other astronauts who died.
Gov. Maggie Hassan is among the people scheduled to speak at the center Thursday afternoon.
She said we must continue to carry on the legacy of McAuliffe, who taught at Concord High School, and the Challenger crew by encouraging more young people to enter the sciences and working to achieve the dreams that led McAuliffe into space.
Thursday is the first day of this semester's American Women in History class at the school, a course McAuliffe created. Students are watching a documentary about her, writing about their dreams as part of a "Reach for the Stars" assignment, and participating in a school-wide moment of silence.

My brother was in high school, in Cambridge Massachusetts, at the time, and he's told me a few times about all these classes being pulled together to watch the 'ol tube television on the metal cart... Awful event.

One good thing to come of it is Richard Feynman's book "what do you care what other people think"
