Server fired after picture of Peyton Manning’s generous tip on bill goes viral

Quarterback Peyton Manning collects his thoughts as he speaks during a news conference in Indianapolis, Wednesday, March 7, 2012. Msnning's generous tip at a North Carolina restaurant eventually cost a waitress her job because a photo of the bill went viral on the Internet. The owner said her restaurant prides itself on discretion.

On the day after Indianapolis Colts icon Peyton Manning lost his job and $28 million bonus, this might seem like a gratuitous story.

But a picture of the quarterback’s bill, reportedly from the high-end Angus Barn restaurant in Raleigh, N.C., has gone viral on the Internet.

The reason? Manning left a $200 tip on the $739.58 tab, the web site Sweater Punch reported.

While that looks like a generous, if somewhat extravagant, 25 per cent gratuity, it doesn’t factor in the automatic 18 per cent tip already in place.

That made Manning’s munificence closer to 50 per cent of his actual food and drink tab.

And his likely unwitting generosity cost the server’s job, because the restaurant’s owner Van Eure was outraged at the unwanted publicity.

“This goes against every policy we have,” said Eure, adding that her establishment prides itself on discretion.

“It’s just horrible,” she was quoted as saying.

She said she planned to phone the newly free agent quarterback to apologize.

What a stupid reason to fire someone.

I would walk into that restaurant and tell that bitch I would never eat there again unless she hired the waitress back,
apologized to her, and gave her a raise.

i could see manning getting this person their job back or even a better job. Manning just seems like a bad ass from everything i read and really good to people that athletes normally act are lesser than them

I'm sure you would do that, but someone that is well known and in the public spotlight probably doesn't appreciate his private business transactions posted on the Internet.

I'm sure Manning didn't call the manager and demand a firing. But you can better believe that if one of his friends suggests they go back to this place for a meeting or meal Peyton would say nada.... at least with the manager firing "Jon" the restaurant shows that it takes it's customers privacy seriously.

id be willing to bet manning doesnt give two shits about being posted. esp since it paints him in a good light, now if he tipped $10 on a $500 bill and everyone was calling him out on it publically, then yes he would probably feel slightly different

My buddy waited on Dave Wandstedt a couple of weeks ago in Chicago and Dave paid the bill tipping him $10 on an $82 tab. So (<)< to Peyton Manning.

With the extra $200 it makes me wonder if the server added that 18% Gratuity stamp AFTER Peyton Manning paid the bill, which would mean Manning didn't realize the tip was already included. But I could be wrong.

i doubt it, you figure most people have an idea what the bill will be before they get it, $150 off is a pretty decent amount when only spending like 500 or so

also this isn't about whether peyton cares about his bill being posted online.

It's about a "classy" restaurant having star shocked wait staff running to the Internet every time a celeb walks thru the door.

The Manager just sent a message that it ain't gonna happen again.

on another note,

Lady Gaga stopped into the restaurant where I work and took a dump:

I'll have it up on Ebay as soon as a can.

Here's a thought:

How about the manager gives the waitress a warning instead of canning her. With a warning, I bet it never happens again.

here's a thought:

maybe "jon" the server has been coming into work late for the last couple of months. Maybe he's also been overheard talking to other waitstaff about how the manager is an asshole and how he could do the managers job so much better. Maybe 'jon' has been a very bitter employee for months now and complains about the shifts he gets assigned. Maybe that day it was "cindy's" table, but asshole "jon" recognizes Manning and tells "cindy", "hey go on a break girl I got this table. these guys look like cheapos anyway"

maybe after Manning leaves, serverboy "jon" is running around the place showing off his big tip, and the manager tells him to shut the hell up and get back to work. (cindy very pissed off) but "jon" doesn't show up the work the next day because he bought a bunch of coke with his $200 tip money and posted up pictures of him and some other guy making out on facebook along with a picture of the big tip he got.

and then the newspaper in an effort to boost circulation runs with the headline:

"Server fired after picture of Peyton Manning's generous tip on bill goes viral"

next headline:

"ACLU to defend Peyton Manning Waiter"

next headline:

"Peyton Manning sorry to hear about waiter getting fired"

next headline:

"Fired waiter can't find another job"

"waiter kills self after making gay porn to pay bills, no comment from Peyton Manning"

what if that happens?

server shouldnt have done it, and shouldnt be surprised that he got fired... Natalie Portman (among other famous folks) rented videos at one of my stores when she was in the Boston area, if one of my employees had posted her rental history online, i'd have fired them for sure.

totally true dude - managed 4 locations of hollywoodexpressvideo (.com) - they're down to one store now.. but the store is on Mass Ave, right near Harvard where she studied. We had a bunch of famous customers actually - actor John Malkovich, the documentary film maker Erol Morris, Juliana Hatfield... the Afflecks' mom heh.
