From our local newspaper...

"The Illini job is seen as one of the top 25 nationally, according to analysts, so this hire could be Thomas’ most important move.

Thomas must juggle rebuilding the Illini and trying to keep everyone happy. Board of trustees members James Montgomery and Lawrence Oliver already made it clear they’d like to see an African-American coach hired."

No, not at all. If they would've said we want an Irish-American coach hired, that's be a problem.

Can you imagine the outcry if they said we'd like to hire an old white dude with a nice collection of suits?

Sickening but what are you gonna do?

You know who's to blame for racism like that? Whitey and white guilt for allowing this type of thing to become the norm.

I really dont have a problem with it as it reads above. Whats wrong with saying they would like to see a minority coach?
If they were demanding and threatened riots that would be something else . If Jesse and Al were screaming on ESPN-C "hire him or else" yea it would be offensive. But they are just 2 members of a board i see nothing wrong with standing up for their constituents.

PPP what do you think the main stream medias reaction would be if it were two white board members who said, we want to see a white coach?

for society to TRUELY become color blind, it will take people of all colors to start doing so.

Because if their white constituents would have said they would "like" a '"European-American" coach it would demand outcry. You don't see the double standard?

The kid who is going to Maryland on a football schollie said something about Jeremy Lin, should have had it revoked. Imagine if a white kid said it about a black person.

As a minority, time for minorities to stand-up and stop bitching about fake racism and reverse racism shouldn't be tolerated.

Well, I for one am sick of the double standards out there today. Yes, white people used to own slaves. But, white people also abolished slavery in America and in Europe. Yes there still is some racism today in America but, I dont partake in it and, it is MUCH less prevalent than it was 50, even 25 years ago. We just elected a black president for cry-eye! Yet, we can still call for universities to hire black coaches, ESPN can still run hour long programs on how terrible it is that the percentage of black baseball players in MLB is declining. Black sportswriters can make ridiculous comments about Jeremy Lin's cock size and get away with it.

We'll know all is right in the world when there is outrage at the lack of Asian coaches in college football, and ESPN does a show titled "Where have all the white power-forwards gone", and sportswriters can say things like "Man, how many 4-year old's does the average black cornerback in the NFL have today?", and John Travolta comes out and says he's voting for Mitt Romney because he's white.

Yea revoke a kids scholarship for making an immature comment. The kid is 17 or 18? All kids joke around like that, of course its bad, but no white kid is having a scholarship revoked for saying anything about black kids.

To the original post, i dont know if its inappropriate, but it sure is stupid. Hire the best person for the job

Yep, that's really all that's important (and, I'm fairly sure most people of all races would agree).

Not so sure about that. You should probably ask Jesse Jackson, Spike Lee, ESPN, Al Sharpton, Barry Bonds and Samuel L. Jackson

Well, yea, if you're looking for people who have made careers by stirring the pot (Sharron and Jackson) to suddenly come to their senses, then you're right, it won't happen. Not so sure what Samuel L and Spike have to do with it... But either way, I think the average American just wants to be compensated fairly for their work.
