Free ice cream - how cool is that?
In celebration of their 34 years of business, on April 3, Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops around the globe will serve up complimentary cones from noon to 8:00 pm.
Founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield began the Free Cone Day tradition as a staff and customer thank you on the first anniversary of their Burlington, Vermont, store in 1979. The company was acquired by Unilever in 2000, but the custom remained.
The company is expected to give away more than 1 million cones of ice cream or Greek frozen yogurt worldwide during the event. Most Scoop Shops will partner with a local charity to raise money and awareness for the cause of their choice.

Says Cohen, "Business can be a force for good." Not to mention cold, creamy, cost-free deliciousness.

For ice cream lovers, next Tuesday is the day to bypass that beloved pint of ice cream sitting in the freezer for a free cone of your favorite kind of Ben & Jerry's ice cream.
Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day returns on Tuesday, April 4, which means participating locations will give out free cones of ice cream between 12 and 8 p.m. If that first cone is not enough, customers can get back in line for another round.
There's a Lot of Snow in the Sierras, So Now What?
"Over and over again," the company's website reads. "We're not counting. Really, go for it."
The ice cream company, known for funky flavors including Chunky Monkey, Cherry Garcia and Phish Food, had its first free cone day in 1979.

"It was our way of thanking everyone for all the love and support they showed us that first year of business in a renovated petrol station in Burlington, Vermont," the company's website reads. Since then, the event has expanded and is "celebrated" across the globe.
To see if a location in your area is participating, find your closest "scoop shop" on the Ben & Jerry's website, and make sure to check the box that reads "Participate Free Cone Day."

I grew up down the street from where they started (Burlington, Vermont)

2 college dropouts selling ice cream out of a gas station.

The rest is history.

I got an icecream cone when they only had the one place in downtown Burlington. My buddy got a job with IBM right out of college. We used to drink at some joint less than a block away.

Yea, those guys grew their brand on a capitalism / socialism formula they devised. Of course they couldn't stick to it and sold out. Ben and Jerry. Just a couple of long haired, dope smokin' entrepreneurs.

I'm for all variations of capitalism, private ownership, and entrepreneurship. Good for Ben and Jerry. They made a great product.

I worked at IBM in Fishkill and in Burlington while in college (technically IBM was in Essex Junction). Was it in Essex Junction that
you and your buddy drank at? I had a condo a couple blocks from the 5 corners in Essex for a number of years...

No zit. We drank in downtown Burlington across from the common. I think it was Church St if my memory serves me.

My buddy lived in Winooski not far from the bridge that took you up the hill past UVM to downtown. He lived on the main st that took you to Essex Junction past St Michaels to IBM where he worked.

Does the name Chet Balon ring your bell? He was a software engineer. Built a house in Milton. Got married to a local heater and moved out there.

Name doesn't ring a bell, but I'm very familiar with all the sites you mentioned. I grew up in the area, and went to UVM...
Also took some grad classes at St Michaels.

Small world. Knew I liked you Zit.

My doctor, who I'm crazy about, grew up in Burlington and graduated from UVM Medical School. She's thirty years younger than me but who's counting. My niece graduated from UVM Med school too. Another niece just graduated from St Mike's.

And yea, that's the place I had my ice dream in a drunken stupor. Good old days when we owned the world. My buddy used to party with Ben and Jerry. Then we grew up and quickly found out that we definitely didn't own the world. It kinda owned us.

I need a Ben and Jerry's. New York Super Fudge Chunk my fav, please.
