I have a Dell laptop. It won't let me start-up normally. I get a blue screen with stop message. It says windows has shut down to protect files. Something to that sort.

I have restarted in safe mode and tried a system restore. This happened yesterday but I didn't have any checkpoint date to restore to from yesterday. I had to choose April 1 as the checkpoint date. Well the computer tells me my restore from April 1st was sucessful but it still give me the same damn blue screen with the stop message at startup?

Any advice would be appreciated!

You have the "blue screen" of Death.
I forget how to fix it... Think I had to call Dell support back then.

I'm sure there are plenty of guys here that can help.
Good luck

put in ur resource reinstallation cd (for xp or whatever)

then reboot and start the cd up from the bootup menus.. and then reinstall windows.. its ur only shot and all ur files are gone if u do it.. so if u need them u must copy ur harddrive somehow first.

also in the future in ur options choose that u want dozens of save pts.. not just one.. u were obviously trying to save space.. now ur bit in the bum.. sorry bud

Thanks. Just a FYI I do have more than 1 checkpoint to choose from. There are multiple checkpoint dates but none of them seem to fix my problem.

yea the blue screen of death really sucks man :|

sorry and hope u get it cleared up.

U might get lucky when u use the resource cd and it will let u REPAIR the system instead of reinstalling it.. but its honestly doubtful.. once the harddrive is corrupt its gonna be tough.

I would trying calling Dell support. Yes you will get a guy from India, but 10 years ago when I got the " blue screen of death"
It took a couple of hours, but it was done.

Just my 2 cents

No changes,

I only use computer for Sports gambling and tubegalore. Damn porn! This was the 3rd time in a couple of weeks that I got the stop/blue screen. The 1st 2 times system restore fix the problem.

I think it may have something to do with "media player trying to install". Each time this has happen it seems I got a message or prompt to install or update mediaplayer. I would always try and close the window, but the Blue stop screen "windows has shut down, appeared."

What is Windows 8???

Don't reinstall windows, try a repair install, keep trying those different checkpoints, google the exact stop message, etc. You might have some corrupt memory. Could try scandisk, could have a bad sector, etc, etc...

But if you don't give what files you have, ignore everything I said and reinstall windows like someone else above said.

you can try the advanced boot options menu ?

After the computer starts and before windows starts , press and hold down F8.
  • Windows 7 displays a menu of special start up options you can choose.
  • Use the up-arrow and down-arrow keys to move the menu’s highlight to .. Last Known Good Configuration
  • then press Enter.
