2012 MLB O/URecord:13-18 (This will be turned around soon enough. That’s a promise)
2011 MLB O/URecord:366-270-42 (Proof and 27-Page Documentation Available Upon Request)

2-3 yesterday, although my best bet Delgado vs Rodriguez under 8 should’ve been at least a push, as it lost by a run thanks to four Houston errors that contributed to unearned runs, including the one in the ninth with two outs where an Atlanta runner scored thanks to a Chipper Jones SINGLE because two outfielders collided. Unbelieveable. Both starting pitchers pitched well enough for an under or a push so it was tough losing that one. But you move on to the next day,and here are my first few bets of the slate, as these are of the 1 o’clock variety. I’m just posting these now since it’s so close to gametime, and I’ll be back a bit after with the rest of my picks for the day.

Tampa Bay Rays @Detroit Tigers
Jeff Niemann vs Drew Smyly
OVER 9

This is a very interesting game. For one, it’s the finale of what has been a very hard-fought series between two teams who should be there right in the thick ofthings when all is said and done. After consecutive 4-2 outings in this series, with both teams splitting the pair, I believe this is the game where each offense breaks out, and that’s very possible against two vulnerable starting pitchers.

First,we have Jeff Niemann taking the mound on the road for his first start of the season. While positioned at the bottom of the rotation, Niemann is unquestionably one of the best No. 4 or No. 5 starting pitchers in all of baseball. He’s had stretches throughout his young career where he’s shown absolute flashes of dominance - streaks that go beyond a month - in which he’s even shut down top offenses. At the other end of the spectrum, he’s had streaks of erratic pitching where everyone was touching him. At the end of the day, Niemann is successful, as displayed in his first few years in the bigs where he always seems to win over ten games a year. In this spot, though, I can see the Detroit offense tagging him for at least a few runs as they find a way to breakout in this series.

Then there’s the most intriguing piece to this over/under, that being Tigers’ rookie Drew Smyly, who is making his Major League debut. It’s always unique when a guyis making the first start of his career, and while I do think Smyly will ultimately become a legit Major League starter, I believe this isn’t a great spot for him, entering playing against a dynamic Rays lineup that is ready toput some runs on the board, unlike the first two games of the series. Smyly’snumbers in Spring Training, which are apparently why he won the job, were good overall (.180 opposing batting average, 1.00 WHIP in 18 innings), but this is more so a vibe where I think he’s going to get hit a little hard in his first start. With new pitchers, that’s mostly what you have to act off of, and I seean over of 9 here, despite the seemingly high number for this matchup.

Other 4/12/12MLB Over/Under Bets I’m Taking (In Order)

Well that's an unfortunate start to the Rays/Tigers over... Rays get bases loaded, NO outs, and because Joe Maddon stupidly has Jeff Keppinger in the cleanup spot when he's a textbook No. 2 or bottom-of-the-order hitter, he pops out, and the next two outs follow without a run being scored. Uh, Maddon, do you realize one of your better true middle-of-the-order hitters, Matt Joyce is batting last??

Adding another over/under...

Jason Vargas vs Derek Holland UNDER 9.5

Not a big bet so I'm not doing a write-up for this game. However, I'll just say that Vargas and Holland are both solid, and if Vegas is offering that extra half-run, even in hitter-friendly Texas, it's at least worthy of a small bet.

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Los Angeles Dodgers (Best Bet)
Jeff Karstens vs Chris Capuano
OVER 7

As I pointed out on Saturday, nobody knows Jeff Karstens better than I do. Nobody. When you go 10-0 on a single pitcher’s over/unders in one season, as I did last year with Karstens in 2011, that means you own him from a betting perspective. He was my best pitcher last year, and I got out to a good start with him being 110% right on his under this past Saturday against Cliff Lee that ended with a 2-1 final. I alluded to the fact that for some reason, Vegas doesn’t show him any respect, despite his 3.38 ERA and 1.21 WHIP from '11. Last year especially, they were constantly setting lines a half-run or full-run higher than it should've been in his starts, and you could argue this is the exact case here, as most Pirate/Dodger matchups in LA would be 6.5 (Like last night’s Bedard/Billingsley matchup) or even 6. Why? Well maybe they anticipate an over in this game, just as I unusually do for this Karstens start.

It could be because of the opposing hurler, that being Chris Capuano. While he was fine last year with the Mets, en route to recording a respectable 11 wins, Capuano got out to a rough start in his 2012 campaign by getting tattooed for four runs in four-plus innings by the lowly Padres. In my opinion, that’s the bottom line in what we’ll see from Capuanothis year - a guy who will ultimately finish up with an ERA in the mid-to-high-four territory. That said, his struggles may continue, as I see the Pirates at least getting a few runs off him, something they haven’t been able to really doin this series. But the Law of Averages should come into play, as the Pirates are due offensively on this Thursday night. And if you’re wondering, I was 5-4 on Capuano over/unders last year.

It’s not a huge best bet, as it’s not my biggest vibe on a Karstens start, but the fact that I was 10-0 on all bets I made where he started, and 1-0 this year ,means we have very good odds of picking up the betting victory here. Go with over 7.

The one above looks like it'll be my final bet of the day, although I'm debating on what to do with Ian Kennedy vs Anthony Bass. Not sure what I'm going to do yet with that one, if anything.
