William Hill, one of the largest bookmaking companies in the United Kingdom, has been around for 78 years. That’s a long time. And they’ve taken a lot of bets over that time. But last week, William Hill took the biggest bet they’ve ever taken.

A British bettor ponied up $792,600 (500,000 British pounds) to bet on a horse named . . . wait for it. . . Big Bucks. The horse had won a record 16 races in a row and was heavily favored to win again: he went off at 1:5 odds.

Fortunately for the bettor, the nine year old Big Bucks won his 17th consecutive race.

Easily.

As a result, the gambler netted $158,520. To put that win in context, that’s about 4 times the average annual household income in the UK. Now, that’s a nice score but it doesn’t measure up to the Irish stable boy who turned $79 into $1.5 million.

Big Bucks big victory came on the first day of the Grand National Festival meet at Aintree, Merseyside – one of the UK’s largest horse racing festivals. In response to the bettor’s big score, William Hill spokeswoman Kate Miller said “With measly interest rates, and a volatile stock market, the punter was obviously banking on Big Buck’s.”

just to clarify even further...this was a steeplechase race and the fact he was able to get 1-5 was fantastik considering his competition was a bunch of sheep and elephants....

Bet365 were left paying out over £1 million after the stable hand for Finian’s Rainbow won a £50 accumulator on the Cheltenham Festival

There were wild scenes of celebration at the Cheltenham Festival on Thursday, with Channel 4 showing two young men going ballistic after Riverside Theatre won the Ryanair Chase.

While it’s not uncommon for stable lads to be overjoyed when their horses win at the Festival, it appears that one of these boys had a very big reason to celebrate the horse’s success on Thursday considering Riverside Theatre’s win made him a millionaire.

It appears as though a member of Nicky Henderson’s staff placed a £50 accumulator with bet365 back in November which featured Sprinter Sacre (Racing Post Arkle Chase), Simonsig (Neptune Investment Novices' Hurdle), Bobs Worth (RSA Chase), Finian's Rainbow (Queen Mother Champion Chase) and Riverside Theatre (Ryanair Chase).

Sprinter Sacre kick-started the accumulator with an impressive win on Tuesday, while Simonsig, Bob’s Worth and Finian’s Rainbow meant a huge prize awaited the stable hand if Riverside Theatre could deliver the goods on Thursday.

Bet365 were contacted about the win by the Racing Post, although they were reluctant to divulge too much information although it is thought that the man in question is the stable hand of Finian’s Rainbow.

Spokesman Pat Cooney said: "It was a horrible day for us as bookmakers, we lost on every single race, and while we are pleased for customers who had a good day, it is company policy not to discuss individual accounts."
