Giants & Phillies Finish Set In San Francisco

It's a given that Don Best Sports analyst Pat Williams is going to mention Wednesday's matchup in St. Louis between the Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds at least twice in the next 24 hours.

He'll discuss the mound duel between Mat Latos and Jaime Garcia and how Busch III has been a nightmare for Latos in a short sample, but a dreamy venue for Garcia. It will be noted how important this series is to the early race in the NL Central, and that it's crucial for the Reds not to let the Cardinals get too far in front.

For my money, however, the game doesn't rate in the top 4 pitching battles on Wednesday's MLB betting card. Make that top 5, which are below.

Braves Host Mets In Getaway Game
The New York Mets apparently didn't read any of the preseason predictions that mostly saw an NL East basement finish. New York moved to 7-3 on the young campaign with Monday's 6-1 win in the series opener at Atlanta as +150 underdogs, and was set to send Johan Santana to the mound Tuesday against the Braves' Randall Delgado in a game that was very close to a pick on the MLB odds board.

Wednesday's matinee at Turner Field is a rematch on the mound from a contest in New York a couple of Saturdays ago, as RA Dickey meets Jair Jurrjens once again. Dickey helped pitch the Mets past the Braves, 4-2, cashing on an even-money underdog line and snapping a string of three consecutive starts vs. Atlanta in which the Mets lost.

This is a crucial outing for Jurrjens who couldn't finish the fifth in that April 7 start and has allowed four homers in his first 9-1/3 innings this season. Jurrjens has missed parts of the past two seasons with knee trouble and suffered through an inconsistent spring in which he walked 12 and was hit for a .303 average in 26+ innings. If not for one good outing against the Astros' 'B' squad, those numbers would have been even worse.

Heavyweights Battle In Boston, San Fran
Two big pitching duels will take place on opposite sides of the Lower 48 as the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox play the middle match of their 3-game series at Fenway Park while the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants close their set at AT&T Park.

The Phils got their series in San Fran rolling with a win Monday as short chalk behind Roy Halladay. Tim Lincecum's struggles continued for the Giants with a 6-IP, 5-ER outing. Tuesday's second game had San Francisco laying -145 behind Madison Bumgarner who just agreed to a new 6-year contract that will run through the 2017 season.

Wednesday's finale pits both team's "second aces" as Cliff Lee will oppose Matt Cain. The Phils are 0-2 behind Lee in 2012, but the lefty has complete game victories in each of his last two regular season outings vs. San Francisco, one a shutout last August at AT&T Park. He lost both of his 2010 World Series assignments against the Giants while pitching for Texas. Cain is coming off a complete game, 1-hit blanking of the Pirates last Friday at home, and is 1-2 with a 1.29 ERA in his three most recent regular season starts vs. Philadelphia.

ESPN2 will broadcast Wednesday's battle between the Rangers and Red Sox (7:00 p.m. ET). Texas is scheduled to send Derek Holland to the mound against Boston's Josh Beckett. This will be the first road assignment for Holland after the Rangers split the southpaw's two starts at home to begin the campaign. He's 2-1 in three career starts vs. Boston (2.95 ERA), going 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA in his two appearances at Fenway. Beckett bounced back from a pounding in Detroit with a nice 8-IP, 5-hit effort in Boston last Friday to beat Tampa Bay. He got the best of the Rangers in his only start against them last year, a 13-2 Boston win in Arlington.

The series opened Tuesday with Boston -120 behind Jon Lester who was opposing Rangers right-hander Colby Lewis with an 8½-run total.

Will Price Be Right In Toronto?
The AL East started play Tuesday with all five teams packed within two games of each other, leaving a lot riding on the 3-game series in Toronto between the Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays. Toronto backers were laying -135 in Tuesday's series opener that had Ricky Romero on the bump for the home team and Jeff Niemann pitching for the visiting Rays.

Game 2 on Wednesday finds David Price in line to start for Tampa Bay with Brandon Morrow his counterpart for the Jays. Price followed up a good outing vs. the Yankees with a very poor performance last Friday in Boston in which he burned through 83 tosses to get just nine outs. Price was a road warrior last season (8-4, 3.25 ERA) and won both of his games at Rogers Centre with an excellent 19:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio vs. the Toronto lineup.

Morrow is looking for his first dubya of the year after the Blue Jays split his first two starts. He was on the losing end of Price's two wins in Toronto last season, allowing eight runs and four long balls in 10-2/3 innings.

Garza & Buehrle Duel In Miami
Capping off our Wednesday docket is the middle game of a 3-game set in Miami between the Marlins and Chicago Cubs. Mark Buehrle will be looking for his first win with the Marlins while Matt Garza toes the rubber for the Cubbies in the 7:10 p.m. (ET) start.

Buehrle has been a victim of run support in his first two assignments with Miami as Fish batters were unable to solve either Johnny Cueto or Joe Blanton in those games. He saw the Cubs frequently while toiling for the White Sox in their crosstown matchups. The ChiSox emerged victorious in each of his last four starts vs. the North Side crew, Buehrle's 1.82 ERA covering 24-2/3 innings.

Garza also has experience against the Marlins dating back to interleague play during his tenure with the Rays, though this will be his first appearance at the new Miami park. Five assignments vs. the Marlins have yielded a 3-2 record for his clubs with Garza's ERA at 3.90.

Los Angeles Lakers Visit Golden State Warriors

Injuries are the name of the game when the Los Angeles Lakers visit the Golden State Warriors in a very busy Wednesday night with 14 games.

Let’s first recap Monday, which saw the top of the Western Conference get much closer with the Los Angeles Clippers beating Oklahoma City, 92-77 as 3-point home ‘dogs. The Clippers match up well athletically against the Thunder and are 3-1 SU and ATS against them this year.

The loss dropped Oklahoma City to a tie with San Antonio for top seed in the West.

Philadelphia is in an official tailspin after a 113-100 loss at Orlando as 6½-point favorites on Monday. The Magic were without Dwight Howard, Hedo Turkoglu and Glen Davis, but it didn’t matter thanks to solid 3-point shooting (11-of-18), and now the 76ers need to win some games down the stretch to ensure making the playoffs.

Tuesday night has Philly back in the spotlight hosting Indiana. Both are in a back-to-back situation and the line looks wrong to Don Best Sports analyst Pat Williams with the Sixers favored by three. The total is 184. Williams points out that the 76ers are an awful 9-21 ATS this season versus teams with a winning record.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, Orlando is in Boston. Both teams have clinched a playoff berth and the Magic are 4-2 SU and ATS in their last six, even with Howard out the last five. The Celtics are 2-0 SU and ATS against Orlando this season, with an average margin of victory of 19.5 points. Don Best NBA analyst Monte Scates expects Boston to take care of business at home.

The Warriors host the Lakers on Wednesday and are giving new meaning to the word tanking, needing to lose games to keep their first round pick for next season. They have shut down almost all their key players for the year, losing 5-straight (1-4 ATS), while allowing at least 112 points in every one.

The Lakers are hosting San Antonio on Tuesday, so they will be playing in a back-to-back on Wednesday (7-11 ATS in that situation this year).

Los Angeles will almost definitely be without Kobe Bryant (shin) against the Spurs. He has missed the last five and is also doubtful for Wednesday as well. The Lakers are playing very good basketball at 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in its last four and there’s no reason to rush Bryant back against the woeful Warriors.

Monte Scates believes the Lakers will go into the Bay Area and manhandle Golden State.

Wade, Bosh, Turiaf out for Wednesday

MIAMI (AP) - Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Ronny Turiaf will not play Wednesday night when the Miami Heat play host to the Toronto Raptors.

It will be the 14th game Wade has missed this season, mostly with a variety of injuries and more recently because of what the Heat are calling a ``maintenance'' program heading into postseason. Bosh will sit out for the fourth time, and Turiaf has been dealing with a sore hamstring for about a week.

Wednesday's game starts a run of six games in nine games to close the regular season for Miami, which plays host to Chicago on Thursday night in a game that could help eventually decide the top seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Fade Alert - 76ers

April 17, 2012

Some pundits believe that this year’s NBA season has been unwatchable due to the shortened schedule and it’s hard to argue against that statement. Certain teams have prepared well for the grueling 66-game slate, while others haven’t.
One of those teams struggling lately is Philadelphia and it doesn’t get any easier for the team that started the season 20-9. Head coach Doug Collins and company were sitting on top of the Atlantic Division behind a squad that was playing sound defense through the first two months.

Fast forward to the final two weeks of the season and the 76ers are no longer leading the division, rather clinging onto the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They were tied with New York (31-29) for the last ticket in the East, with Milwaukee just 1 ½ games behind them.

After Tuesday’s loss to Indiana (97-102), the 76ers have dropped to 11-17 straight up and 10-18 against the spread in the second-half of the season and only three of the victories (Boston, Atlanta, New York) came against playoff-caliber teams.

What makes things even tough for Collins’ club is that Philadelphia’s final five games of the season are on the road. And to make things more difficult, Wednesday’s battle at Cleveland will be their third game in three nights. Fortunately, the 76ers have won and covered both encounters against the Cavaliers this season, each coming in double-digit fashion. And Cleveland is a complete mess as well, evidenced by yesterday's embarrassing loss to the Pistons (77-116) when they trailed by as many as 50 points during the blowout.

We’ve tracked the results (see below) of how teams have fared in the infamous 3/3 nights and you might be surprised to know that the club playing three consecutive days are a respectable 19-18 against the spread.

Make a note that Philadelphia has faced this situation once before and it came up as a loser, falling to the Knicks (79-85) on Jan.11 at Madison Square Garden. The combined 164 points never threatened the closing total of 196.

Even though gamblers don’t have a good trend to back with the favorites or underdogs in the 3/3 situations, total players have watched the ‘under’ go 22-17 (56%) and that includes a 5-1 run to the ‘under’.

After Wednesday’s game against the Cavs, the 76ers will be off until Saturday when they head to Indiana. Then they close the season with road battles at New Jersey, Milwaukee and Detroit.

The Bucks have six games left, three coming on the road but they also get three against non-playoff teams in the Wizards, Nets and Raptors too. Next Wednesday’s home tilt against Philadelphia could be a play-in game considering both teams split their first two meetings.

Gamblers should also be aware that San Antonio will be playing its third game in three nights on Wednesday as well. The Spurs have faced this situation before and ironically they beat Philadelphia 93-76 on Mar. 25, which was part of an 11-game winning streak for the team.

The Spurs control their own destiny for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference if they win their final seven games. Head coach Greg Popovich has rested his key players throughout the season, which makes Wednesday’s affair at Sacramento a contest that you’ll have to handicap just before tip-off.

Below are the situations for this season and the results against the spread

Western Betting Notes

April 18, 2012

By this time next week, most NBA teams will be preparing for their final regular-season game.

Right now, it’s crunch time, filled with talk of tanking, preferred matchups and strategy that adds yet another element to the handicapping game.

The Eastern Conference picture looks to be closer to focus, as the top three seeds are virtually locked in barring an unlikely Bulls collapse and the next three are all jockeying for position secure in the knowledge that they'll be avoiding Chicago and Miami.

Out west, it's wilder. Whether you're booing or cheering that bad pun, let's move on to Wednesday's implication-filled card.

New Orleans at Memphis

The Grizzlies still hold out hope for opening their first-round series at FedEx Forum, but there's little wiggle room to make it happen. An unexpected loss in New Orleans (75-88) on Sunday removed any room for error, but Memphis does have an easier schedule than the L.A. franchises they're attempting to catch, especially since both the Clippers and Lakers are each due just one more home date at Staples Center. Memphis begins a stretch of four out of five at home against the Hornets and they know its only excursion will take it to hapless Charlotte. Winning out is possible, but it has to start tonight against a team that's still playing with integrity for coach Monty Williams, fueled by career backups Greivis Vasquez and Jason Smith making the most of increased minutes. Marc Gasol is expected to try and play through a knee issue that contributed to a 2-for-8 night in Tuesday's 91-84 win at Minnesota. The Hornets have covered six straight and eight of 10 while the Grizzlies are mired in a 0-4 slump against the spread.

Houston at Dallas

The Mavericks have been cursed by the basketball gods this week, putting in four overtime periods with nothing to show for it but a pair of costly losses. Dallas felt a blown basket-interference call on a Pau Gasol 3-pointer with the shot clock expiring contributed greatly to a 112-108 loss in L.A., which was followed up by a triple-OT setback (121-123) in Salt Lake City on Monday. The Rockets were exposed as the inferior team in a home-and-home with Denver, backing them into a position where they'll have to hold off Phoenix and Utah for the No. 8 seed. Dallas will be squarely in that mix if it fails to secure this home date with an in-state rival it has beaten twice since the All-Star break. A win would put the Mavericks in the clear as far as making the postseason is concerned, as they have just three games remaining after tonight. The Rockets could be without centers Marcus Camby and Samuel Dalembert, both of whom are dealing with back issues. Dallas has won and covered both games against Houston this season. The Rockets are 0-4 both SU and ATS in their last four games, behind a suspect defense that has allowed 105.3 points per game during this stretch.

L.A. Clippers at Denver

Sweeping Houston cleared a major hurdle for a Nuggets squad that dropped an Apr. 7 game at Golden State (97-112) and looked to be spiraling out of the playoff picture. Since, they've won four of five and got the good news that Orlando will be coming to town next Sunday without All-Star Dwight Howard. The Nuggets aren't going to reach the 40-win mark necessary to secure a top-four seed in this shortened season, but have an opportunity to continue building momentum and send a message to a potential first-round foe, these Clippers. L.A. is hoping to beat out the Kobe Bryant-less Lakers for the Pacific Division title and has seen Chris Paul elevate his game over the past few weeks, sending his young teammates the message that it's time to get serious and justify the hype Lob City has enjoyed all season. The Clippers are 8-2 SU and 7-3 ATS in their last 10, plus they’ve beaten the Nuggets in two of three encounters this season.

Oklahoma City at Phoenix

The Suns are in position to qualify for the postseason because of their road prowess this month, but fortunately for them, the rest of the heavy lifting is set to be done downtown at US Airways Center. Unfortunately, it will have to be done exclusively against playoff teams, as the Thunder, Clippers, Nuggets and Spurs all come through. Steve Nash has been dealing with a bum hip and Grant Hill is cautiously coming back from knee surgery, so the Suns will certainly need a boost from the home crowd against a Thunder squad that's tied with San Antonio as the top road team (19-11) in the Western Conference. Oklahoma City badly wants to finish as the No. 1 seed to secure the homecourt edge over the Spurs, but is just 5-5 this month. Playing their third of a five-game road swing, the Thunder come in confident with wins in five of their last six meetings with the Suns, including a pair this season by double-digits. This series has been known for high-scoring affairs, which has helped the ‘over’ cash in six straight. The Suns have gone 6-4 ATS as home underdogs this season.

San Antonio at Sacramento

Gregg Popovich has always said he's not going to put acquiring the No. 1 seed above the health and maintenance of his players, so don't expect him to deviate from that core belief as the Spurs play their third game in as many nights in Sacramento. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili all played their normal complement of minutes in Tuesday's demolition of the Lakers (112-91), so you shouldn't expect to see them out on the floor against the Kings, especially since each made cameos in Monday's win at Golden State (120-99). DeJuan Blair sat against the Lakers and will undoubtedly replace Duncan as the focal point inside alongside Tiago Splitter, which means DeMarcus Cousins should have another big night. The visitor has won and covered both of the two meetings between the Kings and Spurs this season.

Utah at Portland

Surviving Dallas kept the Jazz in serious contention for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, so it bodes well for them that they'll see the Blazers twice in their final four games, starting with this stop at the Rose Garden that represents the final road trip of the regular season. The Blazers are among the most banged up teams in the NBA, limping to the finish line without LaMarcus Aldridge as Raymond Felton, Nicolas Batum and Joel Przybilla all deal with various ailments that have affected their play of late. Utah has overcome a myriad of injuries on the wing thanks to the play of Gordon Hayward and D-League pickup DeMarre Carroll, currently achieving cult status in Salt Lake City. Ironically, he'll see a lot of former Jazz standout Wes Matthews here, who similarly came out of nowhere and wound up being plucked out of Utah by a lucrative offer from the Blazers in 2010. Utah has won both of its battles against Portland this season, but the victories were by four and five points.

L.A. Lakers at Golden State

Kobe Bryant will miss another game as he continues to try and get his body back to 100 percent for a playoff run, but after last night's beatdown at the hands of the Spurs, it's up to his teammates to regain the swagger they had begun developing in winning four straight despite his absence. Luckily for L.A., the Warriors are in tank mode, looking to ensure they wind up with a Top-7 pick as any selection higher would be defaulted to Utah thanks to an existing trade clause. Unless they come out comatose, this should be a gimme win for the Lakers, whose ability to hold off the Clippers for the Pacific Division will likely be determined this weekend. With Bryant potentially returning to the mix, L.A. is at San Antonio on Friday and hosts Oklahoma City on Sunday in massive statement games. The Lakers opened as 6 ½-point favorites over the Warriors and it should be noted that L.A. is 3-0 SU versus Golden State this season but 0-3 ATS.

Rangers try to finish off 2-game sweep in Boston

TEXAS RANGERS (9-2)

at BOSTON RED SOX (4-7)

First pitch: Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. EDT
Line: Boston -115, Texas +105, Total: 8½

After getting blown out by 15 runs in the series opener, Boston tries to even the score Wednesday night against Texas in the final installment of a two-game set.

The Rangers absolutely hammered Jon Lester and the Red Sox on Tuesday night, winning 18-3, pounding out 21 hits including six home runs. They are now 4-0 on the road this season, batting .338 (.381 OBP) and averaging 8.0 runs per game outside of Texas. But the Red Sox can also hit, as they have scored 34 runs with a .312 BA plus 19 walks over their past five contests. They also have the superior pitcher on the mound Wednesday with Josh Beckett being opposed by Derek Holland. Beckett has dominated at Fenway Park since the start of last season, going 7-2 with a 2.58 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. The pick here is for BOSTON to get its payback with a much-needed win.

This rare four-star FoxSheets trend expects the Red Sox to bounce back on Wednesday:

Play Against - All underdogs with a money line of +100 or higher (TEXAS) - good AL hitting team (AVG >=.285) against a team with a bad bullpen (ERA >=5.00), hot hitting team - batting .333 or better over their last 3 games. (37-7 since 1997.) (84.1%, +28 units. Rating = 4*).

Holland (1-0, 3.38 ERA) has thrown a pair of quality starts to begin 2012. He held the White Sox to three runs in six innings in a loss on April 7, striking out five and walking three. But he was much better Thursday versus Seattle, throwing 7.1 innings and allowing just five hits, two runs, zero walks and eight strikeouts. The 25-year-old Holland has faced Boston three times in his brief career, going 2-1 with a 2.94 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. His best outing came last September at Fenway when he threw seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits and zero walks, while fanning six. This was quite an improvement from his first trip to Boston in June 2009 when he surrendered four runs in just 4.2 innings.

But if Holland can’t get the job done, the Rangers bullpen has done an outstanding job this season, posting a 2.20 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in 28.2 IP this year with an amazing 28 strikeouts and just one walk. On the road, Texas relievers have a 0.87 ERA and 0.87 WHIP, allowing just one run in 10.1 innings.

Seven Texas starters tallied multi-hit games on Tuesday, with Mike Napoli smacking two homers, and Josh Hamilton, Adrian Beltre, Nelson Cruz and Michael Young also going deep. But Hamilton is the only one in this pack of power hitters that has had success against Beckett in his career, going 6-for-14 with two homers. When facing Beckett, Napoli is 2-for-12 with 4 K, Beltre is 4-for-23 with 10 K, Cruz is 1-for-8 with 3 K and Young is 4-for-24 with 4 K. The totals for this foursome are: 11-for-67 (.164 BA), 2 HR, 5 RBI and 21 K.

Beckett (1-1, 5.68 ERA) was hammered in his 2012 opener in Detroit (4.2 IP, 7 ER, 5 HR), but he bounced back with a masterpiece on Friday, allowing just five hits and one run in eight innings against the Rays. He has struggled at times in his eight career starts versus Texas (3-2, 5.03 ERA, 1.39 WHIP), but he shut the Rangers down in his one meeting with them last year, throwing six innings and allowing just four hits, two walks and one run. Boston was 20-10 with Beckett on the mound last year, including 11-3 in his home starts.

The usually patient Red Sox did not draw a single walk in Tuesday’s beatdown, but they did crank out 10 hits, including four for extra-bases (two doubles, two homers). None of their players has more than eight career at-bats against Holland, but the team was excellent when facing lefties last season, posting a .281 BA, .354 OBP and .453 SLG.

Unlike the stellar Texas bullpen, Boston relievers have been horrendous this season. In 34.2 innings, they have a 6.23 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. The numbers are even worse at home, where the Sox bullpen sports a 6.61 ERA and 1.59 WHIP, while serving up six homers in just 16.1 innings.

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oddsmakers have yet to set a line on Wednesday's Chicago-Charlotte matchup. Pick should be considered an early lean.

Chicago Bulls at Charlotte Bobcats (N/A)

Chicago has a pivotal contest against the Miami Heat on Thursday so it will be interesting to see if ailing point guard Derek Rose (foot) and forward Luol Deng (rib) will be held out against the lowly Bobcats.

Neither played in the loss to Washington and Rose’s durability is becoming worrisome to coach Tom Thibodeau with the playoffs looming.

“I’m always concerned,” Thibodeau said. “He’s missed a lot of games. I’m concerned about that, but also disappointed (overall). We have to play a lot better.”

The Bulls have committed 38 turnovers over the last two games and are hanging on to a 2 1/2-game lead over the Heat for best record in the Eastern Conference.

Pick: Under

Oklahoma City at Phoenix Suns (3.5, 207)

The Phoenix Suns have taken advantage of the Houston Rockets’ recent slide to jump into a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Winners of seven of the last 10, the Suns have gotten back to their high-scoring ways, averaging 112 points in their victories this month. Another team that doesn’t mind getting out on the run are the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are still fighting for the top spot in the West.

If Phoenix is going to hang onto a playoff berth, it won’t be easy. The last five games are against the Thunder, the Clippers, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz and San Antonio Spurs. Fortunately, four of those five are in Phoenix, where the Suns have gone 18-11 (11-2 since the All-Star break).

Phoenix holds the tiebreaker with the Rockets based on a stronger record against conference opponents. The Suns have scored 125 points in each of their last two home games, including a 125-107 triumph over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday.

Phoenix shot a season-high 60 percent in that contest as Steve Nash fought off a sore hip to hand out 13 assists.

Pick: Over
