I always question a lot of rules in sports that are just accepted because its the way its always been. I have asked hundreds of savvy baseball people about this rule and still not one half decent response...

Why does the catcher need to catch a 3rd strike? You are basically rewarding a hitter for swinging at a terrible pitch. Why is this rule in place?

Best answer: It prevents the catcher from taking the field. Lots of flaws to this answer but I found it funny and somewhat possible.

To protect the plate umpire?

I doubt it's along the lines of what you're asking but hate the excessive celebration penalty they have in college football.

How is allowing the hitter an opportunity to reach base after striking out protecting the plate umpire?

I hate the 15-yard penalty for Pass Interference in college. If a defender gets out of place or is beaten by the potential receiver the defender can then foul the receiver so he doesn't catch the ball and the defender's team is only penalized 15 yards. It encourages a defender to foul in order to prevent the pass reception and it penalizes the potential receiver from making the yardage or potentially more.

Never should someone get a better position (in my opinion, get rewarded) for committing a foul. It only encourages fouling.

Agree bad rule quantum but at least you are still being penalized. The baseball rule penalizes the pitcher for being good, and rewards the hitter for being bad.

hands down,,,,done,,,end the category now...one of the few times i even to bother jumping out of my seat watching a sporting event...this penalty is actually used as a benefit to d-backs that get beat and grab hold of a receiver surely about to make a huge play/td....this one slays me every time

Would it be that if the ball is not caught, it is not an out just like it would not be an out at any other base if the ball was not caught and out of the glove. Example: The baserunner tried to steal second and was gunned down by the catcher but the shortstop dropped the ball OUT of his glove and the runner is called safe. In other words the ball has TO BE in the glove to be called an out. If the catcher drops the ball on the strikeout, the ball is obviously not in the glove and the catcher must either tag the man out with the ball or make the throw down to first.

I think rewarding the league who wins the All Star game in baseball with home field in World Series is a joke of a rule...

I don't follow baseball much anymore but I'm assuming this rule is still in effect...dumb rule

I've never really cared for the college football overtime rule. I think it's even worse than the NFL OT rule. I would much rather see the teams continue play on a normal basis. I've also never liked the possession arrow rule in college basketball. You could play some great defense on the other team, and not get rewarded for it if the arrow isn't in your favor...Kind of silly.

now that you mentioned that....i hate a guy getting pressured before passing half court and he calls a timeout before a 10 second violation..and he gets a new 10 with the t.o. That's not rewarding good 'd'

Big difference between taunting and celebrating. Why are young teens not supposed to be very happy after scoring a TD. I hate taunting however !

for me its easy. The single point in the CFL. You line up for a 30 yard field goal and you miss, the ball goes through the end zone and you get a point instead of 3. WTF!

Wow, love the college OT rule. I think it adds a ton of excitement to the game.

To be honest, I don't like the illegal defense rule in the NBA. I fully realize the NBA wants the stars to score points but the only way a team like Washington can stay in the game with Chicago is to play a 2-3 zone.

Boat3x...LOL,.. John Boland I believe that you are correct, at least you point out the precise thinking that makes baseball great. Many sports have rules that are subject to interpretation depending on the who's reffing, which is my big peeve with sports. This week I couldn't be bothered to count the game suspensions handed down from Brendan Shanehan against NHL players with more to come. Not that they weren't deserved, just that many of these same or similar incidents will be over looked when it comes to the Cup finals. The old double standard, ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!
@ScottCarter; Canada is Socialist so they have to award something, it's not the league, it's the law! If Newfoundland had a team they would get 2 pts for that play. LOL,..I kid, but you're right...DUMB!
From one Derp to a Terp; come on man, the name of his position is "catcher" he should be able to do that at least once per at bat. Besides have we forgotten that a GREAT average in MLB is hitting the ball into play better than 3 times out of 10!!!! If you do that for 10+years you're going to Cooperstown people.

Because in order to make an out the ball has to land in someones glove during the play.

Not necessarily true. An out is recorded when a batted ball strikes a baserunner, or when a ball is bunted foul with two strikes.
