New Week Begins With Yankees, Rangers In Texas

The second full week of the 2012 season started with 11 opening day arms taking the mound on Monday, and it will end with 13 such pitchers throwing Sunday, a few of them the same hurlers.

But while names like CC Sabathia, Tim Lincecum, Johnny Cueto and Ian Kennedy, to name but a few of Sunday's scheduled starters, are on the hill, no two pitchers will face bigger assignments the next two days than Francisco Liriano and Jair Jurrjens. Liriano will lead the Minnesota Twins on Sunday when they close out a weekend set in Tampa Bay against Jeff Niemann and the Rays. Jurrjens' regular turn is Monday for the Atlanta Braves who move from Arizona to Los Angeles to begin a new series opposite Chris Capuano and the Dodgers.

Simply put, if the Twins or Braves are really going to seriously contend this season, both Liriano and Jurrjens are going to have to perform up to snuff. We'll begin with Liriano and the Twins since he's up first on Sunday in a 1:40 p.m. (ET) contest inside Tropicana Field against Joe Maddon's Rays who are playing .585 ball there since the start of the 2008 schedule (168-119).

Liriano struggled in 2011 to continue his on-off seasonal offerings. He was third behind Justin Verlander and Jonathan Papelbon for the 2006 AL Rookie of the Year award, missed all of '07 following surgery, made a brief but successful return in '08, stunk it up in '09, solid again in 2010 and a bit stinky last year.

Everything pointed to that continuing after Liriano enjoyed a very good spring – 7 starts, 33:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio, 2.33 ERA. But it didn't carry over, to put it mildly, with the southpaw sporting an ERA close to 12 after allowing five earned runs in each of his three starts to begin the regular season, lasting only into the third inning of the most recent outing at the Yankees. Minnesota has come out on top in just one of Liriano's last five starts vs. Tampa Bay, his lone game at The Trop in that span ending after just 12 outs and four Rays runs already across.

Niemann isn't off to a good beginning to 2012 himself; Tampa Bay has dropped both of the big righty's efforts, though Evan Longoria's hat trick in the 'E' column the last time out played a big part in that defeat. The Rays are a perfect 5-0 in Niemann's career assignments vs. Minnesota with his ERA under 3.00.

Dodgers Look To Continue Perfect Start In LA
Jurrjens not only has to end his struggles, he has to do it at Chavez Ravine where the Dodgers are 6-0 to begin the season.

Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez keeps saying Jurrjens' troubles are not related to the knee injuries that have shortened each of his past two seasons and his place in the Braves rotation is secure. We'll see how long that remains the case with batters slugging .690 against the right-hander to go with nine walks against just eight strikeouts in his first 13+ innings.

The good news is Braves batters have come alive in each of Jurrjens' last two starts with 24 runs combined, and his lone assignment against LA a year ago was a fine outing at Dodger Stadium (6 IP, 1 ER), though Atlanta couldn't capitalize with the dubya.

The bad news is Braves hitters have not had much success recently when facing Capuano. The lefty beat Atlanta twice last season while pitching in a Mets jersey, including a 2-hit, 13-K shutout at Citi Field.

The Dodgers won three of the four games played in LA last season; Monday's first pitch is 10:10 p.m. (ET).

Meanwhile Down In Texas...
No rest for the weary as the Rangers come off a 9-game road trip to begin a series in Arlington against the New York Yankees on Monday. ESPN will have the first pitch a little after 7:00 p.m. (ET). Complicating the trip for Ron Washington's club was Friday's contest in Detroit being rained out, forcing the Rangers and Tigers to play two on Saturday.

New York will be jetting into the Lone Star State after Sunday night's matchup in Boston. Joe Girardi has yet to officially announce his Monday hurler, though it is Hiroki Kuroda's turn in the order. The former Dodger has sandwiched two poor outings around one very good effort to begin his Yankees career with a 1-2 record and 5.00 ERA. He's seen the Rangers just once before, a 2009 start in Arlington that didn't go too well -- 5-1/3 IP, 4 ER -- in a 6-0 defeat.

Derek Holland heads to the mound for Texas looking for his third consecutive victory. He limited the Red Sox to just four hits and two runs over the course of seven innings his last time out, but has not had much success in the regular season vs. the Yanks. Texas is 1-4 in his five starts against New York while Holland's ERA is a bloated 9.00.

Holland did grab a dubya out of the 'pen vs. the Yankees during the 2010 ALCS when he tossed 5-2/3 scoreless innings of relief in that series. Former Ranger Mark Teixeira has given the left-hander the most trouble, banging three homers among his seven career hits off Holland (15 AB).

New York won seven of the nine meetings between the two clubs a year ago, including two of three in Texas.

Yankees try to finish off sweep in Boston Sunday

NEW YORK YANKEES (9-6)

at BOSTON RED SOX (4-10)

First pitch: Sunday, 8:05 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -125, Boston +115, Total: 9

The Yankees look to finish off an impressive sweep in Fenway Park when they trot out CC Sabathia to face the Red Sox Sunday night.

After winning Friday’s game 6-2 with five homers, New York pulled off a stunning comeback on Saturday, erasing a 9-0 deficit in the sixth inning to win 15-9. The Yankees smacked three homers during the improbable comeback, two by Mark Teixeira and a grand slam from Nick Swisher, who both finished with three hits and 6 RBI for the game. Boston’s bullpen allowed 14 runs (13 ER) in three innings on Saturday and now carries an 8.44 ERA (40 ER in 42.2 IP) and 1.81 WHIP. The Red Sox will give the ball to converted starter Daniel Bard who has a 1.71 WHIP in his first two major-league starts. Sabathia has made a living off dominating bad teams, going 115-42 (.732, +45.8 Units) in his career against clubs that have been outscored by at least ½ run per game. Boston is a dreadful 11-30 (.268) since Sept. 1, 2011 and the Yankees were 23-12 (.657) with Sabathia on the mound last year. Expect the big lefty to lead NEW YORK to another victory on Sunday night.

This FoxSheets trend favors the Yankees to complete the sweep:

BOSTON is 15-24 (38.5%, -17.0 Units) against the money line in April games over the last 2 seasons. The average score was BOSTON 4.3, OPPONENT 4.9 - (Rating = 1*).

Sabathia (1-0, 5.59 ERA) hasn’t pitched as bad as his ERA would indicate, posting a 1.13 WHIP with 15 strikeouts and just three walks in his 13.1 innings. After allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings at Baltimore, he was much more effective his last outing, holding the Twins to three runs and four hits in 7.1 innings, fanning seven and walking one. From 2006 to 2010, Sabathia thrived against the Red Sox, going 5-2 with a 2.63 ERA in 10 starts against them. But last year, Boston batted .333 against him in five starts, saddling Sabathia with a 6.39 ERA and 1.77 WHIP. He went 1-4 in those outings, to fall to 7-11 (team is 8-14) in 22 career regular-season starts versus Boston.

Despite last year’s struggles, the only two current Red Sox with a .300 BA against Sabathia (at least 15 AB) are injured OF Carl Crawford (.319) and 3B Kevin Youkilis (.344) who left Saturday’s game with a left quad contusion and will probably not play Sunday. Sabathia has dominated Boston’s three biggest healthy bats, holding Adrian Gonzalez to a .200 BA (5-for-25, 11 K), David Ortiz to a .224 BA (11-for-49, 15 K) and Dustin Pedroia to a pitiful .257 slugging percentage with 13 K in 35 lifetime at-bats. Boston traded for OF Marlon Byrd on Saturday, but he was a woeful 3-for-43 with the Cubs this season and is 2-for-8 lifetime versus Sabathia.

After surrendering five runs on eight hits in just five innings in his first major-league start, Bard (0-2, 4.63 ERA) allowed just one run in 6.2 innings in Monday’s start versus Tampa Bay. Although he fanned seven Rays that outing, he also allowed seven walks. Bard faced the Yankees 21 times over the past two seasons with great success. In 19.1 relief innings, he posted a 2.79 ERA and .197 Opp. BA against the Pinstripes, but did allow three homers. He’s served up four homers (all solo shots) to Mark Teixeira in 15 career at-bats, but two other starters have never gotten a hit off Bard. Robinson Cano is 0-for-8 with 2 K and Derek Jeter is 0-for-7 with 3 K.

Sunday's betting tips: Amare's return affecting Melo

Weather to watch

A 16-mph wind will be blowing in from left when the Cubs host the Reds on a cloudy Sunday. There’s a 20 percent chance of rain, and temperatures will be in the low 50s.

Who’s hot

NBA: Golden State is 12-3 ATS in its last 15 road games.

NBA: The Hornets are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games.

NHL: Pittsburgh is 9-4 in its last 13 games in Philadelphia.

MLB: The White Sox are 5-0 in John Danks’ last five starts vs. Seattle.

MLB: The D-Backs are 7-2 in Ian Kennedy’s last nine home starts vs. winning teams.

Who’s not

NBA: The Lakers are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games playing on one day’s rest.

NBA: Sacramento is 0-6 ATS in their six games playing on one day’s rest.

NHL: The over is 2-7-3 in the last 12 Kings-Canucks games.

MLB: The Twins are 2-6 in Nelson Liriano’s last eight road starts.

MLB: The Angels are 0-5 in Dan Haren’s last five starts on grass.

Key stat

23 – That’s how many first-period goals the Flyers and Penguins have combined to score, most in NHL history through the first five games of a playoff series. The record of 25 was set by Chicago and Edmonton in 1985.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Nicklas Grossman, arguably the Flyers’ top defenseman, missed Game 5 with a concussion and is doubtful to play again in the series, which resumes Sunday in Philly. Grossmann took first-period hits from the Tyler Kennedy and Evgeni Malkin in the Flyers’ 10-3 loss to the Penguins on Wednesday. He sat out the third period, then was replaced by Erik Gustafsson on Friday.

Games of the day

Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers (115, 7)

Oklahoma City Thunder at Los Angeles Lakers (1, 200)

Notable quotable

"We're in this together. We worked hard all year to be in this position. Right now, I am going to do the best I can to be ready in case I'm needed. I'm 100 percent behind Cory and my teammates." – Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo, who is expected to be on the bench again for Sunday’s Game 5 as Cory Schneider makes his third straight start. There is speculation that Luongo, the best goalie in franchise history, already has played his last game as a Canuck.

Tips and notes

Despite first baseman Ike Davis’ struggles, the Mets don’t plan to move him out of the cleanup spot. Davis is hitting an abominable .148 (8 for 54) with three homers and seven RBIs. ''We need him,'' manager Terry Collins said. “As I told him, I’d move him and let him relax but I don’t have anyone else I can put in that spot right now either… I think eventually and very soon, he’s going to be doing some damage.'' Davis went 1 for 4 with an RBI in New York's 5-4 win over San Francisco on Saturday.

Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire will play his second game since returning from a back injury when New York visits Atlanta on Sunday. On Friday against Cleveland, Stoudemire played 27 minutes, getting 15 points and four blocks. "As the game went on, I felt more comfortable," said Stoudemire. "It’s just muscle memory." But Carmelo Anthony didn’t adjust well to Stoudemire’s return, scoring 12 on 5-of-13 shooting in the loss to the Cavs. Melo had been on a tear over the previous 13 games without Stoudemire. The Knicks went 9-4 in that span.

Ryan Dempster, whose 1.33 ERA ranks eighth in the NL, won’t make his scheduled Sunday start against the Reds: he was put on the DL with a quad injury. Randy Wells was called up from AAA Iowa to take Dempster’s place. Dempster’s injury is just the latest blow to the reeling Cubs, who placed reliever Kerry Woods on the DL Friday with a sore right shoulder.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Coming into Saturday's play, the six players who had knocked in highest percentage of baserunners during their AB's (minimum 20 PA).......

6) Jack Hannahan, Clev 10-32, 31.3%

5) Luke Scott, TB 11-34, 32.4%

4) Matt Kemp, LA 12-37, 32.4%

3) AJ Pierzyski, CWS 9-27, 33.4%

2) Andre Ethier, LA 15-43 34.9%

1) Matt Carpenter, StL 10-28, 35.7%

****************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Summing up a strange sports Saturday......

13) Congrats to Philip Humber, the #5 starter for the White Sox, who threw the 21st perfect game in MLB history in Seattle Saturday. He got 27 outs on 96 pitches: five grounders, 13 fly balls, nine strikeouts. Well done.

12) Not so well done was the relief pitching in Boston, where six different arsonists combined to allow 14 runs on 12 hits in three agonizingly long innings. How happy was Terry Francona watching this debacle?

11) Seriously, Bobby Valentine struts around like he's Abner Doubleday or something, but Boston has been outscored 46-17 in five games this week, since Valentine stupidly called out Kevin Youkilis for no apparent reason. New closer Aceves has faced 19 men; 10 reached base, 8 of them scored.

10) Which brings us to headlines on the front page, the news side, of New York Post Saturday: 100 YEARS OF KICKING ASS, referring to Fenway Park being 100 years old, while the Red Sox were worse than the Bronx Bombers most of that time. Not sure what they're thinking about, putting that on the front page, but it just seems childish to me, something an idiot would post on some Internet message board.

9) Speaking of Abner Doubleday, he had to be turning over in his grave near the end of the Giant-Met game Saturday, where both teams set the game back a ways, with misplay after misplay. Giants lost when their catcher threw a ball away down the rightfield line, after they tied the game when the Mets butchered the simplest of popups in short centerfield. Mets also had two guys thrown out on bases in bottom of 8th, when they had legit chance to blow the game open. Win for the Mets, but they were very sloppy.

8) Anyone know how much it cost the greedy bastards at Gulf Oil for that giant ad on the green monster at Fenway? No wonder gas is $4.09 a gallon.

7) Too bad there isn't a rule where a GM like Theo Epstein has to take the responsibility for the Carl Crawford contract, one of the worst in baseball history so far, and send Crawford to the Cubs with Epstein. Guy makes $20M a year and he doesn't play; when he played LY, he was awful.

6) Can someone explain to me why Games 5-6 of Boston-Washington series in the NHL playoffs are on consecutive days, especially when teams travel before Game 6? Congrats to St Louis Blues, who won their first playoff series since 2002. All five games in Chicago-Phoenix series went OT.

5) I'm told there have been athletes who had Tommy John surgery without being injured, because they believe it makes your arm stronger in long run. If thats true, its more than a little scary.

4) They honored the 1972 World Champion A's in Oakland Saturday night, my boyhood heroes. Vida Blue-Dick Green-Joe Rudi-Ken Holtzman-Dave Duncan-Gene Tenace-Rollie Fingers-Bert Campaneris and a bunch more were there. Brought back awful lot of good memories.

3) Was ironic seeing Dick Green in Oakland Saturday night, after watching Bobby Valentine's rough day in Boston; Valentine was a promising player until he broke his leg in Anaheim, trying to pull a home run back in the park at the Big A, a ball hit by a second baseman named Dick Green.

2) Did you know that in 1972, the year before the DH, Oakland carried as many as four 2Bs and would pinch-hit for them every time they came up, because Green hurt his back and missed a good chunk of that season? Other guys were awful hitters-- Ted Kubiak/Tim Cullen/Larry Brown/Marty Martinez/Dal Maxvill. It was an interesting time, for sure.

1) Have to check EBay later this week and see if I can get me one of those Rollie Fingers bobbleheads they gave away Saturday in Oakland.

Sunday Night Baseball: Yankees at Red Sox
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (115, 9.5)

The New York Yankees are simultaneously crushing the baseball and the spirit of the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees, who erased a 9-0 deficit and scored the game’s final 15 runs Saturday, send ace C.C. Sabathia to the mound Sunday night to try for a three-game sweep of reeling Boston. The Red Sox have lost five straight and were outscored 46-17 in the process, but facing Sabathia provides a glimmer of hope. Although he is 177-96 in his career, Sabathia is 7-9 against the Red Sox, including 3-4 at Fenway Park. The Yankees’ starting rotation is off to a slow start with an ERA of 5.84 – Sabathia’s is 5.59. But with 11 homers in their last three games, the Yanks' offense is providing plenty of support.

The Red Sox’ bullpen allowed 14 runs Saturday after Felix Doubront provided stability to the starting rotation with six solid innings. Daniel Bard, who has a 1.69 career ERA at Fenway Park, will try to keep the momentum going when he makes his third major league start. The Red Sox are 11-30 since Sept. 1, 2011.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, ESPN3.com

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH C.C. Sabathia (1-0, 5.59 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Daniel Bard (0-2, 4.63 ERA)

Sabathia earned his first victory in the Yankees’ 8-3 win over Minnesota on Tuesday. He didn’t allow a hit after the third inning and struck out seven in 7 1/3 innings. Sabathia pitched six innings in each of his first two starts at Baltimore and Tampa Bay. Boston’s roster is hitting .257 against Sabathia, with Mike Aviles 6-for-13 and David Ortiz 11-for-49 with two homers and 15 strikeouts.

Bard walked seven, including one with the bases loaded, in Monday’s 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay. He allowed four hits and struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings. Bard has pitched 24 innings in relief against New York, allowing 18 hits and 14 walks with 25 strikeouts and a 4.13 ERA. The Yankees’ roster is batting .243 against Bard. Curtis Granderson has fared well (4-for-7, homer) while Robinson Cano is 0-for-8.

TRENDS:
* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Boston.
* Yankees are 4-1 in the last five meetings.

* Home team is 5-0 in Tschidas last five games behind home plate.

WALK-OFFS:

2. Boston designated hitter David Ortiz, a .264 career hitter in April, went 4-for-4 on Saturday and is hitting .436.

Thunder at Lakers: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Los Angeles Lakers (1, 200)

THE STORY:
With just a few games left in the regular season slate, the Los Angeles Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder are still fighting for position in the West. The Thunder sit one-half game behind the San Antonio Spurs for the top spot while the Lakers sit in third, one-half game ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers. Kobe Bryant’s return from a seven-game absence wasn't much help for Los Angeles in a blowout loss to the Spurs Friday.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ABC

ABOUT THE THUNDER (46-17, 35-28 ATS): Oklahoma City is a game back of San Antonio in the loss column and sits on the wrong side of the tiebreaker, so the No. 1 seed is getting closer to a long shot with three games left. Sunday marks the final road contest for the Thunder, who own the best road record in the West at 21-11.

Oklahoma City has had a relatively easy slate in April, with only two of its last eight games against teams that have clinched playoff berths. Of course, the Thunder dropped both of those to the Clippers. They have yet to lose to the Lakers this season, taking a 100-85 decision at Staples Center on Feb. 23 and winning at home, 102-93, on March 29.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (40-24, 27-37 ATS): Los Angeles has missed two opportunities to help out the Thunder in the last week, dropping a 112-91 decision at home to San Antonio Tuesday and falling at the Spurs, 121-97, Friday. Bryant, who had sat out due to a left shin bruise, went 7 for 12 from the floor for 18 points in 29 minutes.

“I’m back now,” Bryant told reporters after the game. “It took me a half. The second half it felt like I was back in a good rhythm.”

In Bryant’s absence, Los Angeles had gotten strong play from Metta World Peace in addition to Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol. World Peace is averaging 16.3 points over the last nine games, up from his season average of 7.6.

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Thunder are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 vs. NBA Pacific.
* Lakers are 6-15 ATS in their last 21 games overall.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Thunder have won in each of their last two trips to Staples Center

2. Bryant has averaged 24.9 points in 55 career games against the Oklahoma City franchise.

3. Kevin Durant is at the same 24.9 points in 16 career games against the Lakers.

PREDICTION: Thunder 106, Lakers 97

Pick 'n' roll: Sunday's best NBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Atlanta Hawks (-3.5, 191)

Carmelo Anthony scored a league-best 30.6 points in the 13 straight games Amare Stoudemire missed with a bulging disc, as the Knicks went 9-4. When Stoudemire returned Friday, Anthony looked out of sorts and shot 5 for 13 with four turnovers.

As Stoudemire works off the rust and Melo adjusts to fewer touches, New York could continue to struggle.

Now the Knicks visit Atlanta, which has won three straight, including a 97-92 home win over depleted Boston on Friday. Joe Johnson scored 30 on 11-of-18 shooting, but the Hawks played down to the level of the Celtics’ scrubs.

“We were just careless,” forward Josh Smith said. “When you get geared up to play a team with the high potential of Boston and you come out right before the game see that [their starters] are not going to play, I don’t know if it does something mentally to you but … it makes it unpredictable.”

Atlanta won’t have any trouble getting up for New York. And the Hawks are on the verge of clinching homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

Pick: Hawks

Toronto Raptors at Detroit Pistons (-5, 187.5)

The Raptors have been blown out in their last two games by average of 23 points.

But the Pistons haven’t been any better. They’ve dropped seven of nine, including Thursday’s 91-80 loss to Minnesota in which they had a 1-for-20 shooting stretch in the first half.

Neither team has broken 90 points in its last two outings. The Pistons rank 28th in scoring, and the Raptors rank 27th. Toronto point guard Jose Calderon (10.5 ppg, 8.8 apg) is expected to remain sidelined with his eye injury.

The under is 8-3 in Toronto’s last 11 games.

Pick: Under

Sunday's Tip Sheet

April 22, 2012

New York at Atlanta (ESPN, 1:05 p.m.)

The Hawks nearly played the part of extremely rude host on Friday night.

Boston showed up, hat in hand, with Doc Rivers resting future Hall of Famers Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett in addition to the injured Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen and Mickael Pietrus. Enjoy the gift, Boston basically said, opting to put health and rest for its team over homecourt advantage in a first-round series that will likely open next weekend.

Atlanta nearly returned the thoughtful gesture as if it were a wedding gift given more than one year later.

Despite Joe Johnson's 30 points, the Hawks nearly fumbled away a substantial edge in the fourth quarter and held on for a 97-92 win. New York was having its own issues, stumbling to a 98-90 loss in Cleveland that made the outlook for catching Orlando for the No. 6 seed bleak. The Knicks are left to jockey for the final two positions in the Eastern Conference playoff picture with Philadelphia, with whoever finishes No. 7 likely to draw the Miami Heat.

Of greater importance to former Hawks coach Mike Woodson and Knicks nation is developing chemistry and cohesion with Amar'e Stoudemire returning to the starting lineup. The Knicks forward returned from a back ailment on Friday with some spring in his step, but was unable to spark his surging team or co-exist effectively with Carmelo Anthony, who went back to his conventional small forward spot. Look for that to be the focus in front of what should be a packed house at Atlanta's Philips Arena that's likely to include a vocal contingent of Knicks fans.

Woodson, who coached the Hawks from 2004-10, was elevated to interim head coach on Mar. 14 upon Mike D'Antoni's dismissal and has guided the team to a playoff appearance. He's already lost, 100-90, in his return to Atlanta on Mar. 30 thanks to unexpected bench production from Willie Green (8-for-9, 20 points) helping offset a 36-point night from Anthony and a career-high 25 points from Georgia Tech product Iman Shumpert, who thrived in his return to the area.

Stoudemire was out for that game but had 10 rebounds in the only other meeting between these teams, a Jeremy Lin-led 99-82 rout at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 22 that seems like forever and a day ago. Because that result was produced by D'Antoni's system and came in the midst of Linsanity, there isn't much to take from that first encounter.

Expect the keys to this one to include stopping Jeff Teague from getting the Hawks transition game going, Shumpert and Landry Fields attempting to limit Joe Johnson, Stoudemire getting re-acclimated to a major role and Josh Smith and Anthony going at one another. Zaza Pachulia remains out for Atlanta, but Erick Dampier could return to help Jason Collins deal with Tyson Chandler in the post, giving the Hawks a fighting chance on the boards.

Atlanta opened as a 3 ½-point favorite but the number is sitting at 2 ½-points at most shops. The total is 191.

Oklahoma City at L.A. Lakers (ABC, 3:35 p.m.)

In a huge game for both teams, the L.A. Lakers hope to prevent the Oklahoma City Thunder from sweeping all three encounters in this lockout-shortened season.

Not only is this a matter of pride for Laker nation, but also a must-win if they want to keep the Clippers behind them in the race for the Pacific Division and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. OKC is in its own race for the top spot with San Antonio, which holds the tie-breaker should the teams end up with identical records.

Kobe Bryant returned from resting a shin injury that resulted in two weeks of inactivity, but struggled to make an impact against the Spurs in a 121-97 loss on Friday. Bryant, who pledged to be a more effective teammate after watching Andrew Bynum and Ramon Sessions thrive with greater responsibility, took few shots and early and picked his spot, ultimately finishing 7-for-12 from the field for a team-high 18 points.

His effort against the Thunder this season hasn't been as efficient, nor his shot selection as judicious. In the Feb. 24 loss in Oklahoma City, Bryant shot 7-for-24 and came up empty in clutch situations despite not having to face Thunder stopper Thabo Sefolosha. OKC's top perimeter defender was back for the Mar. 30 meeting at Staples Center and helped hold Bryant to 7-for-25 shooting in a game where Andrew Bynum's 10-for-15 night and a 30-18 first-quarter lead wound up wasted.

Los Angeles natives Russell Westbrook and James Harden look forward to coming home and thriving against the team they grew up watching, so count on an emotional effort from both, especially given what's at stake. Bynum has been on a tear, so another point of emphasis is going to be how he fares against Kendrick Perkins and the NBA's top shot-blocker, Serge Ibaka.

Another interesting story line revolves around Derek Fisher, who received a standing ovation when he checked in off the Thunder bench last month. Often the defensive scapegoat against elite athletes like Westbrook, Fisher has found a more suitable role knocking down perimeter looks and leaving the playmaking to Harden in OKC's second unit.

Given the ties that bind them and the likelihood these teams run into each other in next month's Western Conference semifinals, count on plenty of messages being sent in what should be a physical showdown. Oklahoma City has earned the rebounding edge in both games and imposed its will. Count on the Lakers looking to reverse that trend at home as they ratchet up their intensity with the playoffs looming.

The Thunder are listed as one-point road favorites over the Lakers, while the total is hovering between 199 and 200 points.

Surging Hawks seek rare win over Knicks Sunday
NEW%20YORK.gif
NEW YORK KNICKS (33-30)

ATLANTA.gif
at ATLANTA HAWKS (38-25)

Tip-off: Sunday, 1:05 p.m. ET
Line: Atlanta -3½, Total: 191

Two teams trying to peak towards the postseason meet in Atlanta when the surging Hawks take on a Knicks team that has thrived in this series.
The Knicks are 8-4 (SU and ATS) in the past dozen meetings with the Hawks, and 7-2 ATS in their past nine trips to Atlanta. But the Hawks are 7-2 (6-3 ATS) in April and 21-9 SU at home this season. Who will win this Eastern Conference showdown? For the answer, connect to the NBA Three-at-Three Pass for ATS picks covering all the marquee NBA games each day. The NBA Pass is a sizzling 34-17-1 ATS (67%) in April, including a tremendous 18-6-1 ATS (75%) since April 12.
The Knicks have won four of six (SU and ATS), thanks to an offense averaging 101.8 PPG on 47% FG and 42% threes in these half-dozen contests. But points haven’t come easy on the road this year (95.1 PPG) and New York carries a 12-19 road mark (13-18 ATS) into Sunday’s matchup.
Knicks star PF Amar’e Stoudemire (back) returned to the court in Friday’s 98-90 loss in Cleveland, but was understandably rusty in his first game since March 6. He scored 15 points and blocked four shots in 27 minutes, but had just three rebounds, three turnovers and five fouls. But Stoudemire should have a big afternoon against the Hawks considering he’s scored 23.1 PPG on 52% FG in 17 career meetings. New York's other star, SF Carmelo Anthony, was held to 12 points and one rebound in Friday’s loss, but he still has 29.8 PPG on 50.2% FG in his past 12 contests. This scoring binge began with a 36-point barrage in his last trip to Atlanta on March 30. With both PG Jeremy Lin (knee) and Baron Davis (illness) not playing on Friday, third-string PG Mike Bibby scored 12 points -- his second-highest point total of the season -- with four assists and two steals against the Cavs. He now has 18 assists and just two turnovers in the past three games. The FoxSheets provide this three-star trend siding with the Knicks:
ATLANTA is 5-20 ATS (20.0%, -17.0 Units) in home games after playing a game as a home favorite over the last 2 seasons. The average score was ATLANTA 92.8, OPPONENT 95.5 - (Rating = 3*).
Atlanta has outscored its opponents 103.4 PPG to 89.2 PPG in the past five games (4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS), shooting a blistering 48.2% from the floor. Although the Hawks are 21-9 SU at home this season, they are an even 15-15 ATS at Philips Arena with a lackluster 44.9% FG in these home contests.
SG Joe Johnson and PF Josh Smith led the way in Friday’s 97-92 home win over a Celtics team playing without four starters. Johnson had 30 points (11-of-18 FG), six assists and five boards, while Smith chipped in with a double-double (19 points, 12 rebounds). The last time the Hawks faced the Knicks (March 30 in Atlanta), Johnson poured in 28 points with six rebounds, while Smith had 23 points and six boards in that 100-90 victory. SG Willie Green came off the bench to score 20 points (8-of-9 FG, 2-of-3 threes) in just 19 minutes of action. The FoxSheets have a two-star trend favoring the Hawks:
Play On - Home favorites (ATLANTA) - after beating the spread by 42 or more points total in their last seven games against opponent after going over the total by 30 or more points total in their last three games. (42-18 over the last 5 seasons.) (70%, +22.2 units. Rating = 2*).

Thunder go for season sweep of Lakers Sunday

OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER (46-17)

at LOS ANGELES LAKERS (40-24)

Tip-off: Sunday, 3:30 p.m. ET
Line: Oklahoma City -1, Total: 200

Oklahoma City tries to maintain its recent dominance over the Lakers when it visits Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon.

The Thunder are 8-4-1 ATS in the past 13 matchups with the Lakers, including three straight easy SU wins by 14, 15 and 9 points, with two of those victories occurring at Staples Center. But L.A. is a sparkling 25-7 SU at home this season, allowing just 92.3 PPG to visiting teams. Who will win this star-studded matchup? For the answer, connect to the NBA Three-at-Three Pass for ATS picks covering all the marquee NBA games each day. The NBA Pass is a sizzling 34-17-1 ATS (67%) in April, including a tremendous 18-6-1 ATS (75%) since April 12.

Chicago is the only team in the NBA with a better road record than Oklahoma City's 21-11 mark (66%). The Thunder have also done a great job against other elite teams this season, going 7-3 ATS when favored by less than three points. OKC is 6-2 (5-3 ATS) in its past eight games, averaging 110.2 PPG in its past five victories. The defense has also stepped up, holding its past five opponents to 42.9% FG.

SF Kevin Durant is a big reason why the Thunder are in a position to sweep the season series from L.A., averaging 27.0 PPG and 7.5 RPG in the two meetings. He’s also playing excellent basketball in the season’s final month, averaging 28.3 PPG (51% FG, 39% 3-pt FG) and 7.6 RPG in a dozen April contests. He has 29.0 PPG and 12.5 RPG in the past two victories. PG Russell Westbrook has also burned the Lakers for 27.5 PPG and 5.5 APG in two meetings this year, but has had a rough stretch recently. In his past three games, Westbrook (23.8 PPG on the season) has just 14.0 PPG on 38.3% FG (1-of-6 threes), with more turnovers (13) than assists (11). SG James Harden has picked up Westbrook’s slack though, scoring a career-high 40 points (12-of-17 FG, 5-of-8 threes) in Wednesday’s win at Phoenix and 20 points in Friday’s victory in Sacramento. The FoxSheets provide this two-star trend backing the Thunder:

Play On - All teams where the line is +3 to -3 (OKLAHOMA CITY) - after going under the total by 36 or more points total in their last five games, good team, winning 60-75% or more of their games on the season. (87-48 over the last 5 seasons.) (64.4%, +34.2 units. Rating = 2*).

Los Angeles is trying to recover from a complete thrashing by San Antonio on Friday, losing 121-97. The Lakers allowed the Spurs to make 61% of their shots, just three days after letting San Antonio shoot 60% from the floor against them. But despite the two losses to this top team in the West, L.A. has won five of seven games, holding these opponents to 93.4 PPG in the five victories.

SG Kobe Bryant (NBA-best 27.9 PPG) returned to action Friday after missing seven games with a sore shin. He started slow, but found his stroke in the second half by making 5-of-6 shots, and finished with 18 points on 7-of-12 FG. He did very little in the other categories though, tallying just two rebounds and one assist in his 30 minutes of action. Bryant has shot terribly against the Thunder this season, making just 14-of-49 shots (29% FG). C Andrew Bynum (11.9 RPG, 3rd in NBA) also had a lackluster stat line on Friday with a season-low two rebounds, minus-26 rating and just 17 points, far below the 26.3 PPG he scored in the previous four games. Bynum should be fine however, considering he has 19.5 PPG and 12.5 RPG in two meetings with OKC this season. PF Pau Gasol had just 11 points and eight rebounds on Friday, but is still averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.9 RPG in his past eight contests. The FoxSheets have a two-star trend expecting the Lakers to prevail:

Play On - Home teams (L.A. LAKERS) - off a road loss by 10 points or more, a good team (60% to 75%) playing a team with a winning record. (62-31 over the last 5 seasons.) (66.7%, +27.9 units. Rating = 2*).
