The Cleveland Browns' selection of quarterback Brandon Weeden was an about-face by the organization, after previously telling Colt McCoy they would not be looking for another signal caller in the first round.

According to ESPN, the 25-year-old former Texas Longhorn is now expected to be on the trading block after the 28-year-old Weeden was picked 22nd overall Thursday night.

The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reported the Browns were looking at Baylor wideout Kendall Wright to pair with electrifying rusher Trent Richardson, who they selected at No. 3.

But, as often happens during the NFL Draft, the team's front office was forced to abruptly change course when Tennessee grabbed Wright at No. 20.

"We liked Kendall and there were a couple of guys that we liked, but a quarterback is a quarterback, which I think that outweighs everything, at least in our opinion," said Browns general manager Tom Heckert, who maintained during the offseason that the team was focused on grabbing playmakers to help McCoy.
"Brandon was by far the best player for us. There wasn't really even an afterthought. As soon as a couple of guys went, we knew we were going to take him."

McCoy has had a lackluster two seasons in Cleveland after being selected in the third round in 2010. In 21 career starts, he has thrown 20 touchdowns and 20 interceptions, but has been hindered by the offense's lack of big-play ability.

Green Bay is rumored to offer a late round draft pick for McCoy. McCoy would then replace Flynn as the #2 QB behind Rodgers

Update : Browns change tune on McCoy

BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns expect quarterback Colt McCoy back Monday for the team's offseason program.

The question is how much longer he's with the Browns.

GM Tom Heckert said Friday the team had no discussions with any other team about trading McCoy after the selection of Brandon Weeden in the first round of the NFL Draft. Heckert and Shurmur said Weeden was drafted to start, which is logical given he will be 29 in October. That could mean McCoy's days in Cleveland are numbered.

"I plan on Colt being here on Monday as part of the offseason program," coach Pat Shurmur said. "I think there's no story there right now. We drafted a quarterback to come in and compete with him at this point, and that's where it's at."

Shurmur said McCoy went back to Texas on Friday for a visit that had been planned. Shurmur talked with McCoy briefly Friday, but did not discuss McCoy's future.

The Browns emphatically denied that they told McCoy they would not draft a quarterback in the first round. ESPN reported McCoy had been told that.

"We don't talk to our players about who we're picking," Heckert said.

"Absolutely false," Shurmur said of the report. "We don't consult our players on what we're doing in the draft."

The ESPN report did not cite a specific source for the information, though it clearly seemed to come from McCoy's camp.

McCoy congratulated Trent Richardson on Twitter after his selection by the Browns as the third overall pick, but he was silent about Weeden.

"I haven't run into Colt," Weeden said when he met the Cleveland media for the first time. "As far as that other stuff, that's out of my control. I'm here to compete and that's a management decision."
