Just saw this happen on a game tonight.

Shortstop threw his glove at a batted ball over his head. He missed the ball.

What is the rule if he would have hit the ball in the air with his glove?

Good one.

I've seen this before, but don't remember. I know that it's a penalty of some sort... a home run?

I had a kid on my little league team way back in the day- before left handed gloves were easy to find. He had a right handed glove and did this all the time. Never came close to catching the ball though.

3 bases. same as if he throws his hat and hits the ball. My question to you is did he deliberately throw his glove at it?? I find it hard to believe a pro player thew his glove on purpose. If it fell off it would be umpire decision as to if he was trying to make a play and glove accidentally came off.

yeah, I heard this from Umpiring school, probably the only one I remembered. If I knew that when I played, I would be trying to knock down homeruns all the time.

Same rule in ASA softball. When a fielder throws a glove at a ball, the umpire is supposed to signal a delayed dead ball, and the runner is protected all the way to third base. If the batter-runner is put out before third base, he is awarded third. If the batter-runner can score on the play, he scores. If he is put out between third and home, he is out.

Would be a judgement call by the ump like fan interference: If in his mind the hit would have cleared the fence, the batter would be awarded a HR (4 bases) instead of just 3, despite you knocking down/intercepting the HR ball and keeping the ball in the park.

It is a judgment call by the umpire how many bases to award.

did the player deliberately throw his glove at the ball, OAKAS? I don't think I've ever seen a pro do this.

I don't see why it would be a penalty at all. You don't see them penalize an outfielder for climbing up the wall to rob a guy from a HR! I'm sure we've all seen a liner hit right at an infielder and he knocks it down with his hand or glove with no penalty called. So what's the difference?

difference is they aren't throwing equipment at the ball to stop it

The judgment call is if the ump thought it would have been a HR.

Waiting for a frustrated pitcher to throw his glove at a bunted ball in fair territory in disgust and thereby turning a bunt single into a triple *lol*

Yep vikes. It happened in the Texas game last night.

The announcers could not believe it.

He was screwing around with the game well in hand. It wasn't an actual serious attempt to hit the ball with his glove. Just tossed the glove up in a joking manner, but was careful to not actually get it near the ball in play.

I would think that we would see more of this if it were an advantage. But since we don't see it happen frequently tells me that it wouldn't make a difference.
