Rangers Wrap Rays Series, Begin 10-Game Road Trip

Like a top-ranked golfer without a major title, the Texas Rangers close out the final full week in April and begin May as the best team in baseball. Their series finale with the Tampa Bay Rays will catch the spotlight of ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball crew (8 p.m. ET), and the same cameras will be on them Monday in Toronto when the Rangers begin a 10-game road trip against the Blue Jays.

Tampa Bay and Texas have started to build a pretty good rivalry after meeting in the ALDS each of the past two seasons, both times with the Rangers emerging victorious. The Rays got a small measure of revenge in Friday's series opener, jumping out to a 4-zip lead in the top of the first en route to an 8-4 triumph as +135 underdogs.

Friday's victory extended Tampa Bay's streak to six games. The Rays haven't had much luck at Rangers Ballpark the past few years, entering the series just 3-9 in regular season action since the start of the '09 campaign. Joe Maddon's crew was looking to extend the win streak on Saturday when the Rays were slated to send Jeff Niemann to the mound opposite Texas' Colby Lewis. The Rangers were priced at -155 for the contest with a 9-run total; results were still pending at press.

Sunday night's clash features mound matchup between a pair of young left-handers as David Price gets the call for the Rays against Texas' Derek Holland in the 8:00 p.m. (ET) start.

Price is off to a 3-1 beginning to '12, and coming off his second career shutout this past Tuesday vs. the struggling Los Angeles Angels. While the shutout was indeed nice, Price's best stat of the night was walking just one batter in the outing. The former Vanderbilt standout entered that game having issued nine free passes over his first 15 frames of the season.

His control will be something to keep an eye on in the early stages of Sunday's game as Price has had his share of troubles with the Rangers lineup. Including his postseason work the past two years, Price owns a 5.29 ERA in nine career outings vs. Texas, with Tampa Bay 3-6 in those games. Two starts in Arlington have yielded a 15.63 ERA, though the Rays did manage to grab a win in one of those contests.

Holland is coming off a rough go against the New York Yankees this past Monday when he walked four and allowed all seven runs in a 7-4 defeat. Like Price, he'll be facing a lineup that he's struggled against over his brief career; five regular season assignments vs. Tampa Bay have netted a 6.51 ERA for Holland, but Texas has won three of the games.

Most of Holland's postseason work vs. Tampa has been out of the bullpen. The one October start he made against the Rays was Game 2 of last year's ALDS, a 5-IP, 1 ER effort to help Texas to the 8-6 victory.

Dan Bellino, in just his third full season umpiring in the bigs, will be south of the dish calling the balls and strikes for Sunday's affair. All three of his previous plate assignments this season finished 'under' the total.

Darvish & Drabek Duel On Monday
Monday's matchup for Texas begins the first of three 10-game road trips the club will endure this season. Another is coming up in early June when the Rangers tour Anaheim, Oakland and San Francisco.

Yu Darvish will be making the fifth appearance of his rookie campaign for Texas on Monday while Toronto sends Kyle Drabek to the hill at Rogers Centre (7:00 p.m. ET).

Darvish has improved with each trip to the mound, and really flashed some of his potential last Tuesday against the Yankees. The right-hander worked into the ninth while keeping New York off the plate, finishing with 10 strikeouts – and most importantly, just two walks – in the Rangers' 2-0 win as -135 chalk.

Texas is now a perfect 4-0 when Darvish pitches, with the total's splitting 2-2 'over/under' in the outings.

Drabek has also been flashing some of his potential this year, helping Toronto to a 3-1 record in his four assignments while compiling a 2.25 ERA. The lone defeat came last Wednesday in Baltimore where the 24-year-old pitched well enough to win (6 IP, 2 ER) but received no support from his offense in the Orioles' 3-0 triumph.

His only experience vs. the Rangers came in an April 2011 contest in the Lone Star State. Drabek tossed six frames and surrendered three runs, all earned, picking up the 6-4 victory.

Toronto won six of the 10 meetings against Texas in 2011, and the Blue Jays are 7-3 in the last 10 clashes at Rogers Centre.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals – 2-0, 1.52 ERA

Gonzalez hasn’t allowed a single run over his last 20 innings on the bump and has struck out at least six batters in each of his four starts. The lefty hasn’t thrown more than 97 pitches yet this year and has walked just seven batters. Three of his four outings have played under.

Jaime Garcia, St. Louis Cardinals – 2-0, 2.49 ERA

Garcia should have a lot in the tank Sunday after throwing just 85 pitches in a tough-luck no-decision in his last start. He gave up just one run over 7 2/3 innings against the Cubs before getting the hook in the eighth. So far, the Cardinals are giving him 6.8 runs of support per game.

Slumping

Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels – 0-4, 7.23 ERA

Santana won’t have much of a chance picking up his first win of the year if he can’t keep the ball in the ballpark. He gave up four dingers in his last start – a 5-0 loss to Tampa Bay – and has now allowed an MLB-high 10 homers already. The Angels aren’t giving him much help either, averaging only 0.8 runs in his starts.

Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies – 0-1, 9.39 ERA

At least it probably can’t get much worse for Kendrick. He probably only has to make one more start before Cliff Lee gets back from the DL, but will need to be much better after getting torched for seven runs on 11 hits in only three-plus innings of work against Arizona.

NHL: Philadelphia is 1-4 in its last five games as a favorite.

NHL: The over is 2-5-2 in Phoenix’s last nine home games.

MLB: Houston is 6-17 in its last 23 games in Cincinnati.

Key stat

1 – The Phoenix Coyotes managed just one shot on goal during the third period of Game 1’s 4-3 overtime win over Nashville. The Predators fired 16 shots during that frame at Mike Smith and outshot the Coyotes 42-24 in the game. Phoenix opened as a +100 home underdog in Game 2.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ray Allen, Boston Celtics - Allen is traveling with the team to Atlanta for the start of their first round playoff series, but it is unclear if he will play in Game 1 on Sunday against the Hawks. Allen has not played for the past two weeks because of a sore ankle. Allen told ESPN.com that he is still day-to-day, but Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he is doubtful that Allen will play on Sunday. "Honestly, I don't think he'll play, but we'll find that out," Rivers said. "He can play, so I'm not saying he's not, and it would be very nice if he does, but he's just not moving well and we'll just find out."

Game of the day

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers (-4.5, 201.5)

Notable quotable

"Mentally and physically, we're tired. There's no doubt about that. But that's playoff hockey. We played through a lot of adversity in the first round and we pulled it off. We're happy to move on. To win the first round when you haven't been in the playoffs the year before and have been struggling to get out of the first round, it feels good for a day. Then we have to face the Flyers." – New Jersey Devils veteran goaltender Martin Brodeur about the quick turnaround after beating the Florida Panthers in seven games. New Jersey opens its Round 2 series at 3 p.m. ET Sunday at Philadelphia.

Notes and tips

The Houston Astros recalled right-hander Jordan Lyles from Class AAA Oklahoma City on Saturday and will start him on Sunday at the Cincinnati Reds, the club announced. Lyles is 4-0 with a 3.46 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 26 innings for Oklahoma City this season. The Astros placed right-hander Kyle Weiland on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with a sore right shoulder.

Dallas Maverick guard Delonte West might miss Saturday night's playoff opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder due to an illness. Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle told ESPN Dallas that West had a stomach illness and was vomiting on Friday night. If West is unable to play, he would most likely be replaced in the starting lineup by Vince Carter. West averaged 9.6 points and 3.2 assists in 44 regular season games.

The Philadelphia Phillies moved Jimmy Rollins back to the leadoff spot for Saturday’s game, hoping to give him a spark. The 33-year-old shortstop batted third in all of his other starts this year but was hitting only .216.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Thunder rallied from 7 down with 2:25 left to nip Dallas 99-98, taking a 1-0 series lead in the best NBA playoff game of the day.

-- Miami went on a 32-2 run and dismantled a disinterested Knicks team 100-67; New York starters were 9-33 from the floor.

-- Orlando beat Indiana for 9th time in last ten tries, winning at Conseco despite not having Dwight Howard. Mr Van Gundy can coach.

-- Bulls beat Philly by 8, but lost Derrick Rose with a torn ACL, which is a complete disaster. Happened in game's last 90 seconds, too.

-- Rangers won Game 1 over Washington 3-1; both teams were coming off of dramatic Game 7 wins in their previous series and were sluggish, with only 32 total shots on goal in the game.

-- LA Kings are now 4-0 on road in playoffs, winning 3-1 at St Louis. In last series, Blues lost Game 1 at home, then won next four games.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.........

13) Mel Kiper Jr gave Eagles/Bucs the best grades in this weekend's draft, and gave Saints/Raiders/Seahawks the worst grades. Seattle's picks seemed to go against the grain of almost every expert, which doesn't mean they're wrong, just that they had some different information.

12) Jacksonville drafted a punter in the 3rd round Friday, highest a punter has been drafted since 1995. Rams drafted a kicker in the 6th round; kid made nine 50-yarders in a row LY at Missouri Western.

11) Disaster for the Bulls, who lost star Derrick Rose to a torn ACL on an injury that happened in the last 90 seconds Saturday. Miami's road to the Finals got a lot less complicated yesterday.

10) Who decided that the Knicks/Rangers should play at same time, 3:30 Saturday? NHL probably chose their game times after the NBA- I mean my dad is 86 and wanted to watch both games, but do demographics say that there aren't that many people who want to watch both? Putting the Ranger game at night and the LA-St Louis game at 3:30 seemed like the better idea.

9) Larry Brown started his tenure at SMU by firing three players, one of whom was the starting point guard. Cutting a starter is always a great way to grab everyone's attention, especially if you know you have a player in the wings to replace him, a player who is better.

Three kids who got cut can stay at SMU on scholarship, or Brown's staff will use their connections to get them a scholarship somewhere else. Thats how that stuff works; its bad business to just revoke scholarships, but it can be done.

8) Texas-San Antonio jumped from Southland Conference to WAC, but in the time before they played a game in the WAC, they've now jumped again, this time to Conference USA. They're not the Roadrunners for nothing. Its a sign that the WAC is a dying football conference.

7) Southern Mississippi hired Morehead State coach Donnie Tyndall to be replacement for Larry Eustachy, who took the Colorado State job. Tyndall benefitted from coaching Kenneth Faried, who is now in the NBA.

6) Why isn't Jack McKeon managing the Marlins anymore? Who decided Ozzie Guillen was such a great manager? Miami has been bad this month.

5) Roy Halladay has a 191-94 career record, but is 1-5 against the Cubs.

4) Nationals had two pitchers get an RBI Wednesday; according to ESPN's researchers, they're first team in four years to do that.

3) Since the start of 2010, home underdogs are 3-22 when Dimuro calls balls and strikes. 3-22 is really, really bad.

2) Why did the Red Sox let Jonathan Papelbon walk? Anyone know?

1) 8 of the 30 major league managers have managed 3+ teams. Teams don't take chances on new blood much, which is why the White Sox hiring Robin Ventura was interesting. He had almost no managing experience.
