11:23 AM PDT -- The coroner just arrived on scene.

NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, CA ... and a law enforcement source at the scene tells us cops believe he shot himself.

Seau was 43-years-old ... and leaves behind 3 kids and an ex-wife.

Cops are currently at Seau's home -- located in San Diego County -- and were seen talking with a man who was inside the house and appeared distraught.

We're told Seau sent text messages to his ex-wife and 3 kids yesterday saying, "Love you." We're told they all responded and didn't suspect anything was wrong. We're told he last saw his kids 3 weeks ago.

Sources close to Seau tell us family members didn't notice any signs of depression in recent weeks.

Seau was a beast in the NFL -- skyrocketing to fame thanks to his explosive play with the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. The USC standout was selected in the first round of the NFL draft in 1990 and played in the league for 20 years.

Seau was involved in a car accident back in 2010 when he drove his SUV off a cliff in Carlsbad, CA hours after he was arrested for allegedly attacking his girlfriend. Seau later said he was not trying to kill himself ... insisting he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

Says he sent the "I love you" text to his ex wife as well, which could mean he was still hung up on her and possibly couldn't handle being without her and the kids full time.

Once again a woman pushes a man over the edge.... (im speculating)

12:06 PM PDT -- Junior's father has arrived to the scene. Family members are crying hysterically.

12:00 PM PDT
-- the San Diego Chargers just released a statement, claiming, "Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now...We ask everyone to stop what they're doing and send their prayers to Junior and his family."

11:45 AM PDT --
Cops will be giving a news conference about the situation any moment -- we will be streaming the audio LIVE.

11:33 AM PDT -- Law enforcement sources tell us ... Seau died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Back in 2011, former NFL star Dave Duerson shot himself in the chest ... and explained in his suicide note that he wanted his brain donated to a research center because he believed the blows he took to the head during his football career caused him to become mentally impaired.

11:27 AM PDT
-- We're told a 911 call came in around 10:00 AM. No word on who made the call.

11:26 AM PDT -- The North County Times is reporting Seau's body was discovered by his housekeeper. The L.A. Times is saying it was found by his girlfriend.

11:23 AM PDT -- The coroner just arrived on scene.

11:20 AM PDT -- The San Diego Chargers have posted a tweet saying, "We don’t have any information right now on the Junior Seau situation. We pray he's ok."

The NFL is going to have a big f'in problem with these veterans taking their lives. Obviously, I'm speculating here but there is a trend developing here.

Very Sad.

Junior was a beast, a tremendous player and a good man.

RIP

I am not sure I saw it on this board. I read something about how the NFL might not exist in 20 years because of the head injuries.

I doubt that will happen, too much money at stake. However, I guarantee you that there will be politicians coming out of the woodwork with kneejerk reactions to this.

Personally, I'm not sold on the concussion thing being the sole cause of this. To me, take any guy in his 40's or 50's away from his chosen profession and he is going to struggle with life. Honestly, once you have been an NFL athlete, what is going to match the rush of that. Kick in big money with the temptations that come with it- or lack of money (can no longer live the high life, bankruptcy, etc.) and you have issues.

I'm not discounting the fact that concussions may play a role in these suicides, but to point the finger solely at them is missing the big picture.

I played football from the age of 7 through high school and also played lacrosse 4 years in college. I have the same problems these guys did but not at such a high level. This is 100% due to the head trama!!!!

Was with a guy today that knows Junior fairly well. Said he never was over the ex-wife. She left him because he was banging the waitresses at his restaruant. She was a nut he said, but he could never get over her.

this suicide is more about personal issues than any head-related injuries. He was a troubled man for a long time.
